It can also function as an internet and browser-based device, suitable for quick internet surfing using the Wi-Fi technology that Apple has implemented in every iPhone model since its release. The iPhone can execute a large number of applications(that are commonly known as Apps for those familiar with Apple products).

The applications must be approved by Apple in order to function on the device, and can only be obtained by visiting Apple's online application store(App Store)where they have stored over 20.000 applications from a large number of domains, like gaming,social-networking,map tracking, entertainment, and others. You can also run into familiar names, like YouTube,Twitter,FaceBook, and others.
There are currently four available models of the Apple iPhone, the first one being released in 2007,and the last pne in 2010.Even tough every iPhone model has particular features that defines it,like the 3G video call ability in the case of the iPhone 3G(the second iPhone model that was named so because of this feature),all models have some special characteristics that have remained untouched during all four transformations and are iconic for the device itself. Some of these characteristics are the screen size, the button alignment and positioning,or the button functions. All models have the same number of physical buttons(two buttons)except the newer revisions that include volume keys on the side, hold by one or two pieces of plastic.
The iPhone requires activation as a mobile phone in order to gain access to the multimedia and internet features as well. This practice is commonly for GSM subsidized phones, but opposing the GSMs,the iPhones cannot be activated by introducing a code or serial number. However, just a few months after the release of the original iPhone,a man named Jon Lech Johnson discovered a way to unlock the phone and bypass the activation step by using a few software programs and editing some data in the iTunes binary. He posted everything necessary on his personal blog so everyone could unlock their iPhones.

Later on came the iPhone 3G,the second iPhone model, that presented some new and interesting features,as well as some new security measures, like the in-store activation. So,hackers now had another thing to worry about besides the SIM Lock that came with the phone, and restricted access to device, and only one carrier could be registered as valid. In the end, hackers found a way to register the phones from other networks,as they originally had to be registered to AT&T for U.S. territory.Apple speculates that iPhones were shipped across the sea and unlocked there while only a quarter of the total number of sold iPhones were actually registered to AT&T.
