Steve Jobs, Now…

posted in news, by Codrut Nistor

Steve Jobs now has just made a big mistake, and an inspired move at the same time. Why am I saying that? The very short version of the story is that he confirmed the existence of the "kill switch" that allows Apple to remove apps from your iPhone. While I always like to know the truth instead of a nice lie, I think the truth is pretty hard to handle this time, although Jobs also said this is more of a security measure for protecting the user, instead of the first step towards "iPhone dictatorship..."

Just as a side note, here's what Jobs said earlier this year, in an interview:"My job is to not be easy on people. My job is to make them better. My job is to pull things together from different parts of the company and clear the ways and get the resources for the key projects. And to take these great people we have and to push them and make them even better, coming up with more aggressive visions of how it could be."

While the above is not closely connected with the App Store, it still goes deeper than some may think. The iPhone gets more and more popular, leading in Flickr cameraphone images uploads, so since there is a huge user base, there's also a huge potential for malevolent code to sneak through the App Store right on peoples' iPhones.

According to Claudine Beaumont reporting for The Telegraph, "Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive, has confirmed there is a 'kill switch' built into the iPhone [operating system] that allows Apple to remotely delete malicious or inappropriate applications stored on the device."

Even more, "Mr Jobs insisted that the so-called 'kill switch' was there as a precaution, rather than a function that was routinely used. 'Hopefully we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull,' said Mr Jobs."

I think the above settles everything, so let's hope for the best. After all, we're talking about Steve Jobs now, and if even he and Apple are going down the dangerous "let's spy our users" slope, there's only one way to go: Linux!
