RIP, G4 Macs!

posted in hardware, by Codrut Nistor

I don't know about you, but I don't think the MacBook Air has such an amazing design. Building it so thin, that was amazing, but when it comes to best Apple designs so far, my favorite is the "Graphite" Power Mac G4. Just take a look at it below - who can say this computer is anything else but beautiful? Anyway, the sad news is that Apple will drop support for most G4 Macs, together with some Xserve products, so we're already talking about a "vintage Mac" when naming the G4...
Graphite Power Mac G4

I know, this is really sad, but we're not talking about rumors - starting on the 17th day of March, the following list will become officially "obsolete" :

- PowerBook G4
- Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio)
- Power Mac G4 (Quicksilver)
- Macintosh Server G4 (Digital Audio)
- Macintosh Server G4 (Quicksilver)
- Xserve RAID
- Xserve (Slot Load)
- Xserve (Cluster Node)

That means Apple will cease providing service parts or documentation for the products listed above, and you won't be able to send them as Mail-In Repairs to AppleCare Repair Centers.

As a final note, it seems that California has a special situation - Xserve products there are "vintage," while the others are considered "obsolete," the difference being that service parts for the first category will only be available to repair older products purchased in that state. Other than that, it's the same - RIP, good old G4 Macs!
