When talking about a QuickTime upgrade, I think about a new version of Apple's software. Now, it seems things are going to change. How? Well, think about upgrading a software to a hardware device! Unfortunately, we're not going to get a "QuickTime portable media player," no matter how cool seems the idea. Anyway, embedding QuickTime seems like an interesting approach, and that's exactly what the rumor claiming that Apple's announced product transition expected to happen this Autumn is all about...

While a lot of people are praying each morning to get DivX support on the iPod Touch, a QuickTime encoder/decoder on a chip doesn't seem like a brilliant and very useful idea, but we're only talking about a rumor at this time, so we shouldn't draw any conclusions for now.
The interesting part of this whole thing is that having video playback and encoding handled by a separate chip could increase performance on lower-end Macs, but also help increasing the life of the battery in iPhones or iPods.
If the above proves to be truth, Greenpeace could also thank Apple for saving a lot of electricity, that would have been used otherwise to convert other formats into those required by iPhone, iPod Touch, or Apple TV(being realistic, I am sure they won't add such a chip to cheaper iPods).
The rumors regarding this topic are going as far as claiming that Apple is preparing a chip to allow Blu-Ray and 1080p decoding, but since the iPhone and iPod Touch are not full HD devices, I don't think they're going to develop more than one chip, if this is going to happen, anyway.
So...what do you think about this whole thing? Would you like to get QuickTime on a chip? Apart from DivX support, what else would you like to get with such a device, IF it's going to be released?
