The Blu-ray should be the next generation of widely-adopted optical storage disc, but the DVD still reigns supreme. Anyway, more and more high-end computer producers have started including Blu-ray drives, at least as an optional component, so we may not be that far from the day when the DVD is left behind, just like the CD is today...

Blu-ray disc

Obviously, it's a pretty strange fact that Apple doesn't offer Blu-ray on its Macs yet, but that will probably change in the not-so-distant future, because Stan Glasgow, president of Sony Electronics US, said they are talking with the Cupertino-based company about the possibility of bringing Blu-ray drives on some Macs.

Unfortunately, we don't know yet if this is going to happen for sure, when, and for what price, but since Apple is so deeply involved into the HD world, they will probably have Blu-ray drives on some Macs, sooner or later. After all, some movies deserve to be kept in your personal collection, and not only rented from the iTunes Store...

With Adobe Flash still missing in action on Apple's iPhone, alternative technologies could be considered to replace it. One of them is Microsoft's Silverlight, which allows web applications to be developed with animations, vector graphics, as well as multimedia playback, exactly what the iPhone needs to unleash fully featured rich Internet applications. Unfortunately, there's one problem...

Microsoft Silverlight

Speaking at the Mix 08 conference in Las Vegas, Steve Ballmer didn't show his optimism reagarding the arrival of Microsoft Silverlight on Apple's iPhone. The interesting part is that Microsoft's CEO didn't completely eliminate this possibility. In my opinion, even if he knows Microsoft won't ever support such a thing like Silverlight on the iPhone, he won't say that in public. Would you do such a thing, in his place?

In fact, Ballmer said Microsoft is considering putting Silverlight "everwhere", and having it on the iPhone would be "interesting". He also added there have been talks with Steve Jobs about this, so hope is not lost. Since Microsoft is not really the big, bad and ugly ogre of the IT industry, and having Silverlight on the iPhone would benefit everyone, let's hope this interesting possibility will be reality some day, not so far from this moment...

Since this subject is as ancient as Rome, I will drop the introduction and get straight to the subject - what about the iPhone SDK? Apple's iPhone event just took place, and everyone started to check the conclusions, so here they are...

Apple SDK Roadmap

We'll surely hear about all today's little iPhone-related events a long time from now on, so I won't get into details. There's plenty of time to do that in the future. For now, let's simply browse the main topics Apple people talked about in their SDK Roadmap event, shall we?

First, there's some good news for entrepreneurial developers - venture capitalist firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers announced a $100 million "iFund" for them, and if you want to know more about it, go here.

Next, it's Apple - of course. They just revealed their App Store, accessible via the iPhone and iPod touch, as well as from the iTunes store. Apart from the above, there's no need to add that the SDK was - finally - released. For us, end users, the most important part arrives as soon as we start seeing the first applications build by third parties using this SDK, and that's not going to happen in a day or two...

At last, Apple took a big step in the enterprise area, allowing its iPhone to synchronize mail, contacts, and calendar, directly with Microsoft Exchange servers. That's it for now, but be sure to subscribe to our news by email to get more as soon as we post here...

Apple's Mac OS has a pretty long story, and my intention is not to tell you stories now. What I will do is notice one obvious thing - usually, as a program/OS goes on and on, its version number increases. In Apple's case, the current Mac OS version is 10.5.2, but some rumors say they are going to get back to the old 10.4 version for one last time...

Mac OS X Tiger disk

Apple is known to listen to its users' opinions more than other companies, but they are still far from perfect. Anyway, the problem with Mac OS X 10.5, usually known as "Leopard", is that some applications are still having compatibility problems, and a lot of professionals using such programs have chosen to stay with the older, but more reliable for their tasks, Mac OS X 10.4, nicknamed "Tiger".

The story goes like this - various sources that I wouldn't bet my life on their words claim that Mac OS X 10.4.12, probably the last update to Tiger, is almost ready. Its release seems to be scheduled for late March, but no other details about this are available for now.

Obviously, anyone could say that Mac OS X 10.4.12 will come with " a lot of bug fixes and security updates", but what about the rest of it? That, my friends, is what remains to be seen...

We all know that spending your money, after working hard for them, can be a really nice thing to do, giving you a very special feeling. Obviously, I am talking about purchasing useful things, or at least gadgets that you've been dreaming for ages, although they won't be of any special use for you... other than make your friends go "WOW!", but what about combining a useful device, like the MacBook Air, with a 24k gold coating and 12,000 Swarovski crystals?

Golden Age MacBook Air

As you can see in the picture above, this thing doesn't look bad at all. Some of you may love its looks, but I don't. Honestly, it's not about the price, but simply because I like the MacBook Air as it is - I am crazy about Silver or Black metallic coatings, and I would really hate to see my laptop like a Christmas tree!

This time, we have 12,000 Swarovski crystals, each of them having a 24k gold coating beneath. You don't get to see such a MacBook Air every day, believe me, and this laptop's value should also shot those mouths saying Apple's latest creation is "too expensive"...

Now...did I say something about the price? Oh, yeah, if you were scared about the "$40k" in the title, cool down - Bling My Thing’s "Golden Age" custom MacBook Air is selling for "only" £20,000 ($39,750), so you'll have enough money to get a bag for this laptop... but what if you want a gold/diamonds bag, too? Well, that's another story, especially since I never heard about such a thing, so far!
