How To Hide Your Purchased IOS Applications

The iOS applications you have bought will always be at your disposal but you have the possibility to hide the ones that you don’t plan on using in the near future. By doing so, the Purchase screens are going to be less cluttered if you are using the latest version of iTunes and iOS 5. Here is what you have to do to hide those apps.

In iTunes, you will have to click on the iTunes Store link that you can see in the Source list. Now, access the home screen and then log into the iTunes account you have if you have not logged in already. Look at the Quick Links area and click on the Purchased link. Now, click on Apps and then you’ll have to move the cursor to the applications that you would like to hide and then click on the “X” which will appear in the top-left corner. Once you do this, you won’t be seeing these apps anymore in the Purchased screen of the iTunes Store or in the Purchased screen of your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

Speaking of the iPhone and the iPod Touch, you can hide apps by tapping on App Store and after that tapping on the Updates button located at the screen’s bottom. You will then have to tap on the Purchased screen which you’ll see at the top of the Updates screen. Go to the app that you want to hide and then slide your finger across the name of the application. You will now notice a red Hide button and if you tap on it, this will hide the application on your iOS device and also in iTunes. If you are using an iPad, go to the App Store and after that tap on the Purchased button which you’ll find at the bottom of the screen. Now, you must swipe across the application that you would like to hide and after that tap on the resulting Hide button. Keep in mind that by hiding an application that you no longer use is not going to physically remove this app from your iOS device nor it will prevent the App Store to show you updates for this hidden software, which is something that will probably bother you. Hopefully, in the near future with a update we won’t get these software updates for the hidden apps. If you have changed your mind and want to start using once again an application, you can unhide that app by logging into your iTunes account and then select the Apps tab. In the resulting screen you must click on the Unhide button which will appear next to the apps. Now, those applications that were hidden will reappear.

To unhide an application from your iOS device, you have to launch the App Store and tap on Featured or you might want to tap on the Top Charts / Top 25 button. You now have to scroll down to the resulting screen’s bottom and then tap on the Apple ID button. In the resulting screen you must tap on the View Apple ID and provide your password. You will get the Account screen on which you’ll have to scroll down and then tap on the Hidden Purchases. Now, tap on the Unhide button which sits next to those applications that you would like to unhide.

Freeing Up Space On An IOS Device

You probably have heard that the new iPad is out. Apple’s new tablet features an impressive 2,048 x 1,536-pixel display so in order to make the most of this Retina Display, the applications developed for the tablet will be bigger to benefit from the improved graphics support. Such updates to the apps will affect owners of older iOS-running devices so the available space might turn out to be a bit of an issue. For this reason, in this article we are going to talk about how you can free up space on you iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch.

If you like storing a large quantity of music content on your iOS device, you might want to consider iTunes Match which will cost you only $25 per year. With the help of this service, Apple is going to store the music in iCloud so all of the music will appear on your iPhone but it won’t actually occupy space on the smartphone’s internal storage. However, you should know that iTunes Match on iOS does not actually stream the music because it actually downloads the song to the device. You have the possibility to configure your iOS device wipe the collected store of downloaded and cached songs.

Another method that you might want to consider for increasing the amount of available space would be by uninstalling those applications that you use the least. To do this you should go to General > Usage in the Settings menu and from there your iOS device will be able to detect the applications that you rarely use. Needless to say, you will always have the possibility to install one of these applications if necessary. The third option available would be to make a backup of your photos and videos taken with the iOS device. You will be able to import back this type of content with the help of Photo Stream with iPhoto or you can connect the iPhone or other iOS device to a Mac and import the files the old fashioned way. We should note that the aforementioned iPhoto can delete these photos and videos that you import. This method is very useful for those of you that take a lot of photos and record videos, since a photo taken with the rear camera of the iPhone 4S occupies about 2.5MB while a HD recording needs 2.5MB / second so you could run out of available space right away.

If you still have problems with the available space you might want to consider buying an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch with a higher internal capacity. Too bad that Apple does not offer these devices with an external microSD card slot which would have made the storage upgrade simple and cheap.

Third Generation Apple TV Review, Part III

The last improvement that this third generation Apple TV comes with would have to be the better video performance but don’t get your hopes up too high because you’re in for a rather big disappointment. Keep in mind that the 1080p branding will only appear if you are using the device in 1080p mode and in the iTunes Store settings you have 1080p enabled. The bad news is that there isn’t a lot 1080p content available on iTunes, but hopefully Apple will work on this and more fullHD content will be offered.

Until it does this, you will mostly use the Apple TV (third generation) for 720p videos, just like the predecessor. There is another problem related to the 1080p content as the Apple TV needs a lot of time for streaming such content. Even though the company has implemented the H.264 profile for reducing the size of the 1080p files without compromising the quality of the video, these full HD videos need a considerable buffering time. For this reason, some of the third-gen Apple TV users will prefer to download 720p movies rather than getting the 1080p movies and waiting for these to be buffered.

We also have to mention that this latest generation of the Apple TV does not come with support for fullHD AirPlay streaming, which although might not be very important to some people, other users will be disappointed, especially if we take into consideration that with the soon-to-be-released OS X Mountain Lion, Mac users will be able to share the screens with the help of AirPlay. Let’s not forget that most Mac laptops and all desktop Macs offer resolutions higher than 720p. Most likely, Apple will release an update for the device will offer support for fullHD AirPlay streaming but nothing is certain at the moment. All things considered, it is up to you to decide if the third generation of the Apple TV is worth considering. Most likely, those who own the predecessor will not opt for this new version since it doesn’t really bring anything new, except for the 1080p support which right now is rather limited. One of the advantages of the new model would have to be the potential software evolutions which will probably make the device more attractive. We still recommend the Apple TV since it works great as a NetFlix performer, an AirPlay receiver, as well as a standalone device for viewing Mac/PC iTunes content on your HDTV.

What Apple has to do in order to make the third generation Apple TV better is improve the support for 1080p content since right now you don’t get a lot of full HD videos. In addition, with future software updates we hope that the streaming time will be shortened, because otherwise lots of users will still prefer to download 720p movies that don’t have these issues. One of the assets of this device would have to be its affordable price tag which makes it more appealing than a lot of other similar devices, especially if you own an iPhone, iPod Touch or an iPad with which you can improve the Apple TV experience.

Third Generation Apple TV Review, Part II

The third generation of the Apple TV is running on iOS and comes with support for 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, while the Bluetooth chip has remained the same. Even though the hardware of the latest generation hasn’t changed a lot, the company’s focus for this lineup of products has been mostly on software iterations, starting with the original Apple TV and the 1.0 version. Over the lifespan of the device, Apple has experimented more or less with various main menus, switching from a single-line list to a two-pane list, followed by a horizontal bar that had vertical list options, and after that by an updated version that had the same bar but less options.

The latest iteration of the software is 5.0 which comes with another change of the main screen. It replaces the list with wider icons that look more like the ones you can find on other iOS devices. Beneath each of these icons you will notice smaller text. If you want to scroll down from the top line of the available choices you will notice the next three rows while the big Apple TV logo sitting on the screen’s top will become invisible.

Aside from the introduction for 1080p support, there aren’t any changes between the third-gen model and the predecessor. Those who use the Apple TV in the U.S. have access to separate TV Shows, Movies and Music icons which are connected to the company’s iTunes, and iCloud services. Those who live in other countries don’t get all of the icons, depending on the country where they live in so they must rely mostly on the local iTunes library. Some of the secondary services available include paid-subscriptions to National Hockey League, Major League Baseball, Netflix, along with free sections, such as YouTube, Wall Street Journal Live, Internet Radio, podcasts, Vimeo, iCloud Photo Stream and Flickr. We should also mention the support for AirPlay which can replace the proprietary Apple TV user interface with the content which is streamed from an iOS-running device or a computer where iTunes is running. If we consider the iPhone 4S and the third generation of the iPad, the new Apple TV can do even more, aside from streaming photos, videos and audio. These devices are able to share their entire UIs with a TV with the help of a feature which Apple calls Screen Mirroring. It can display the content of just about any game or application.

As we mentioned in the first part of the article, the box that comes with the third generation Apple TV says 1080p and the user interface also has some 1080p-related menus. When the second-gen model came out many people were disappointed because the device was limited to a maximum resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels (720p) so it’s nice to know that the new model comes with support for 1080p. The support for this higher resolution brings crisper graphics and fonts but the differences are not that big. You will notice some minor visual improvements when you are streaming high resolution photos, such as the ones from National Geographic which now look better.

Third Generation Apple TV Review, Part I

Apple released earlier this year the third generation of the Apple TV which costs $99. This follows the footsteps of the first generation model which came out back in 2009, a device that was available for three years until the second-gen model was introduced. The latter got the update to the software version 5.0, which is the same version that you will find in the third-gen model which looks virtually the same as the model it replaces.

The new model is priced the same, has the aforementioned 5.0 software and runs the same build so you don’t get any surprises at all as this is just a modest upgrade. Design-wise, as we were saying earlier it looks identical so it is made from the same plastic and rubber as the outgoing model, along with the same aluminum 6-button remote control and also the same black cable for the wall power outlet. What does this new model bring? Partial support for 1080p (full HD) and a different processor, that’s it.

The first generation of the device was nothing more than a stripped-down Mac mini that sat inside an aluminum shell that also consisted of gray rubber and gray plastic. Even though it had quite an appealing look, the first-gen Apple TV suffered from heat, speed, as well as several software issues which weren’t fixed entirely during the lifespan of the device. Instead of trying to fix all the issues wrong with the first-gen model, Apple developed the successor of the device which was completely different and it focused primarily on streaming content. In order to achieve that $99 price tag that we have mentioned, it did not come with the metal casing, the Mac-related components and it also diminished its footprint by 75%. The second generation Apple TV measured 3.9 x 3.9 and had a height of 0.9 inches, tipping the scales at just 0.6 pounds. The company decided to ditch the hard drive, conventional RCA stereo audio and component video in favor of 8GB of flash storage, optical audio and an HDMI video port. The first-gen model had a full-size USB port while the model it replaced it came with a microUSB connector. As for the IR port of the first-gen model, this was not available for its successor so you won’t find it in this latest version.

The third generation of the Apple TV which came out several weeks ago has just about the same characteristics as the second-gen model, except for the 1080p references on the bottom and back of the box. Keep in mind that the device does not come bundled with an HDMI cable which you will need in order to make the connection. As far as the internal components are concerned, for regular users of the Apple TV there haven’t been any major modifications. An Apple A4 processor was used for the second-gen model, while the new model is powered by a stripped-down A5 processor, a slower and less powerful version of the CPU that powers the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S. Instead of having two processing cores, the one in the third-gen Apple TV has only one processing core.
