Linux and Windows on iMac

posted in iMac, by adimoga

iMac, “Internet” Macintosh desktop computers is one of the  most successful brand of Apple. Starting with 1998 when the first model was released, iMac suffered some major changes in both design and  performance. Imac G5, which is considered to be a new generation  in computer technology, has all the important components placed behind  the display. The result is a thinner device that has anodized aluminum and a glass panel on the front.

What is Linux? The name Linux comes from Linux Kernel and it also uses Linux Kernel which is considered to be a computer operating system. It was written in 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Unix-like is  the area that includes Linux. This operating system is met on mobile phones, servers, computers, supercomputers and a video game console. One of  the main advantages of this operating system is the fact that Linux is  considered to be open source software. Because of Ubuntu, Fedora, Smartphone that run embedded Linux and also because many applications available for both Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X, the fact that hardware and also application designs have a lack support for Microsoft Windows increases the number of Linux users.

If you already have an iMac running Mac OS X and you would also like to install Linux and Microsoft Windows on your system, how would you do that? This is a really difficult question, don’t you think?  For having 3 operating systems on a computer you have to make it a triple boot. Apple already created a so-called Boot Camp with the help of which you can dual boot your system. The biggest difference between iMac and PC is the fact that iMac uses EFI – for BIOS, a GPT for  partition.

Why Linux on iMac? Compared with Mac OS X Linux is, as I’ve  already mention, it is free. It can also be customized – to a large degree.  Moreover it doesn’t matter on what device you use it. It works exactly  the same. In addition, the fact that you can easily have access to Linux  kernel – you can easily change it, make modifications – could be a  positive but also a negative fact. Another positive fact is the one  that Linux compared with Mac OS X is much easier to use. Linux in some ways looks similar to Windows. Don’t you agree?

In order to install other 2 operating systems, first you have to repartition your hard drive. In the terminal write the command:  “diskutil list disk0”  in order to see how your hard drive  is partitioned. Replace “#” with the necessary GB you need for Linux and  Windows. In a second step you have to install a boot loader, such as rEFIt. Type /efi/refit/enable-always.sh and reboot.  Install Linux – Fedora for example for a DVD. Select the icon with rEFIt menu after reboot.  When the installation is complete install Windows the same way as with Linux.

Don’t forget to select the last MS-DOS partition that remain and also select the NTFS format. Don’t forget to reboot your machine. When the rEFIt menu appears go to “Start the Partition Tool”  and reboot again. Don’t forget to install Boot Camp in order to update your hardware. With the help of rEFIt bootloader you can easily choose between Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. Will you try to install 3 operating systems? Do you think it could be necessary?
