The iPod classic has made a long road from October 2001 when the first generation of iPod classic has released on the market to the present days.  The fist iPod had a white and black liquid-crystal display and had a 5GB hard drive. The first generation iPod was able to store up to 1.000 mp3 file tracks. The novelty which the iPod came with was the small size due to its small hard drive of only 1.8". The iPod had a main button and 4 other buttons around a mechanical scroll wheel. This type of iPod classic was $399.

In 2002 came the second generation of iPod classic. In this generation the mechanical scroll wheel from the first generation was replaced by a new model represented by a touch-sensitive wheel. The body style was the same with only a few small changes like rounded edges and corners. The hold switch was also redesigned and the iPod could be found in 10GB and 20GB hard drive; the first one was $399 and the second one was $499. This is the period when the Apple Company began selling iPods that were compatible with Windows operating system.

Third generation was released in 2003. iPod classic third generation was thinner than the last versions and the FireWire port found on iPod first and second generation was replaced with a Dock Connector. This iPod came with 4 new button located on a row between the touch wheel and the LCD screen. In this generation you could have found iPods with 10GB, 15GB and 30GB hard drive, the last one had a price of $499.

In 2004 came the fourth generation of iPod classic. The touch wheel from the last generation was replaced by a new one; it was replaced with the Click Wheel. Apple reduced the price for an iPod and in this generation a 40GB model was $499 and a 20GB model was $299. The fourth generation iPod was able to play without charging for about 12 hours and it was introduced as an iPod accessory a wired remote.

The fifth generation was introduced in 2005. This generation had a larger display than the previous ones of 2.5" and the Click Wheel was smaller. This was the first iPod classic that had an alternative color scheme and it had a rounder rear casing. It was also the first iPod classic that played videos in MP4 and H.264 formats. The iPod played files like: music videos, movies, podcasts and TV shows. The video files were downloaded from Google Video or purchased from iTunes Store and then imported to the iPod with the help of iTunes software. Photos or videos may be played on a projector, a monitor or a TV set from this iPod classic generation. In 2006 this version of iPod was updated to be able to support iPod games. The iPod came in a 30GB model, a 60GB model and in a 80GB model; the last model was $349. This iPod came with an innovative function that allowed its users, using the Click Wheel, to type the artist, audiobook, the track name or the podcast she/he wanted to see and then iPod returned the results.
