iPhone 3G Problems

posted in gadgets, by Codrut Nistor

Do you think the iPhone 3G is awesome? Well, I can't say I totally disagree, but it seems there are a lot of problems with it, some real, some that may appear in time, while others are nothing more than fiction at this time. While the dock issue is a real one, there are plenty of things to think about, as we're going to see right away, but before anything else, let's see what's up with that dock, shall we?

iPhone 3G dock

According to an Apple Store employee, quoted by IntoMobile, your old iPhone dock won't be able to host the new iPhone 3G. As the guy said, "the iPhone 3G is shaped differently and doesn’t fit in the same dock," so you can leave all hope. The worst thing is that all audio systems featuring universal docks build so far will also be incompatible with the latest iPhone! What a pity...

Well, at least let's hope someone will manage to come up with a "iPhone dock to iPhone 3G dock converter," so those audio systems I mentioned above won't instantly become obsolete as soon as their owners will upgrade to the iPhone 3G, but this is not all - now, let's see what else can be bad about the iPhone 3G!

Another possible issue with the iPhone 3G is long term cost. To make a longer story short, during the first two years, you'll have to pay $160 more because the pricier data plan for the iPhone 3G, compared to the old iPhone.

The iPhone 3G's camera still doesn't have a flash, and there are no replaceable batteries for it, either.

This should be everything I can think of now...but there's also Samsung Instinct, a very interesting "potential problem" (of) for the iPhone! What do you think? Any other issues with the 3G iPhone you can point out? Please, go ahead and let us know!

the new IPhone 3g suck!!! If you have the 3g option ON, your reception goes to 0 bars! AT&T says it's Apple, Apple says it's AT&T.
My advice to you, DON'T buy it. The 3G is useless.

I just returned mine and back to the Blackberry. SIM card was messed up, poor reception from 3G, a variety of connection/email issues, then the short comings with the included software - no photo text messaging, no cut/paste, not Tasks list, poor syncing with MS Outlook... Just not a great product at this time. When returning it took the phone 45 minutes to reset - get my details off it, the CS Rep said it "should" tak 30 seconds!
Take my advice, wait a few months, then try it - I plan to.

I disagree! I got my iPhone 3g the day it came out, actually was the first in line to get it! I haven't had any problems with it other than some apps crashing but that's. Mostly the creators fault!

Iphone,Smyphone, I waited in line like a robot and got the Ultimate
phone and within 4 days I return the ultimate phone to ATT and
returned to rusty but trusty Sprint Mogul. On the Plus side: Video
quality is great,Apps store has a lot of useful apps and can only get
better. Pictures taken with camera comes out clear and bright. Fast
response touch screen. On the Negative side: Inside of some buildings,
I get no service which was a deal breaker. I was trying to show of my
Iphone to others and I couldn't even get reception. Meanwhile, there
$100 phone was ringing out the hook. Couldn't get used to wired
headsets. Stereo blue tooths are the what happening. 3g kills that
battery so fast that I had to constantly turn it on and off. WiFi
connection is always asking for permission from available networks,
not the Mogul it connects automatically. When I speak on the phone
with out blue tooth, the volume buttons are where you finger rest on
the phone. When my face touches the screen, I see 333333333. GPS is
not ready for prime time. Matter of fact it's sorry. No insurance for
what is essentially a peice of glass. While I was waiting in line for
the iphone 3 people droped their phones, I mean it was just gravity.
It's nice but not for the hard core muscle phone users. It's great for
kids and light weights.

The Iphone 3G is a great idea on paper, but a whole different story in your hands! I am still pissed that I waited in line in a mall in Atlanta, Ga for 6+ hours and a freind of mine in Detroit just walked into her Apple store in Michigan and walked out with a phone in 20mins tops! I have since returned my Iphone 3G for a full refund to the Apple store and had to wait in line for that too behind several prople returning theirs too. Problems are as follows!:

1. Menus respond when they want to-I tried scrolling from one menu to another-No Response, then without my finger on the phone-10+ secs later the menu scrolls.
2. "0" bars of 3G signal strength then full strength all with the phone stitting still on a table.
3. Phone answered incoming calls on it's own without any bluetooth device connected or paired with it.
4. Phone reboot on it's own and display the Apple boot screen.
5. My old Sony Ericsson has much better call clarity, better digital pictures and has a removable memory card for additional storage capacity.
6. ridiculously horrible battery life!
7. You can't just walk into an Apple store to receive help-you have to book an appointment online only to speak to technical support. Techincal support then tries to blame the phones' behaviour on AT&T even with my Sony Ericsson sitting on the couter right next to it with FULL BARS OF 3G SIGNAL STRENGTH! The technical support rep then proceeded to replace the 3G with a refurbed 3G in a no name box-I told him to give me my sim card and my money back!!!!!!!!!

The thought had crossed my mind that maybe I got a lemon-so I swung by an Apple store at another mall and 7am this morning there were over 100 people in line-Some of them with 3g's in the hand to return to Apple. I then made the decision that I need to stick to what works (My Sony Ericsson) and leave this piece of junk alone!

I've got the 3G iPhone in the UK.
From reading your comments I think you have a network problem with 3G in the US. Here, it works fairly good.
On the docking station... What it was said above in this blog is not true. I have a Bose docking station and as I write I'm listening to my iPhone 3G docked into it... and working just perfectly fine!
Life battery... agree, not ideal...
No photo txt mesg it's also a shame... as well as with the cut/paste
Apple could have made a better effort improving the quality of the camera... as there are currently 5Mgs cameras in a variety of less-sophysticated phones.

Hmm...it seems the iPhone 3G returning to base problem is pretty big, from what I can tell after reading your comments! For me, it's still that basic Nokia I got a few months ago - no camera, no color display, just a phone that I charge and it keeps going for over a week, and does exactly what a phone is intended to do, nothing more. :)

Yrjan, on July 27, 2008

I was able to walk into an AT&T store in washington state the day they came out and buy one no prob. I only have a few issues with mine. First is the picture message feature, or lack of i should say. Second is, still no flash player. either im missing something, or this is the biggest hunk of crap ever. The web pages load nice and quick, everything looks so pretty, then theres this little cube with question marks on it? WTF!?!?

Kweenz, on July 27, 2008

I bought the 3G last Friday, a couple of weeks after it came out, Still couldnt manage to get my hands on the 16gig so I settled for the 8. The only major problem Im having is the Text messaging, sometimes the keyboard takes forever... which is a problem for me since Im used to sending ALOT of texts and typing really fast lol... the other thing is the applications crashing... but it only is a couple of apps and they were the free ones... hope nothing else goes wrong :S

15

GOONZ, on July 28, 2008

this phone is a piece of crap. the 3G conks out all the time, you walk inside a hut with something as much as a thatched roof and you get no bars of service.
It froze up on me several times already too.

AT&T is just as bad. By mistake, they activated 5 phone lines for me on launch day as a result of thinking they were having problems activating. Now it's taken several weeks to clear that up also. They didn't believe me that I didn't have 5 iPhones so I had to explain to them that each person got 1 phone...how was it possible that I left the store with 5???

This iphone has been a total nightmare from day 1 and I regret switching over from Verizon.

MitchNZ, on July 28, 2008

I brought the 3G the day it come out in New Zealand, I had a couple of crashed early on which where cause by poorly written free apps which once removed stops the crashing and instability.

3G reception is great! I don’t have any call quality issues of any sort and in fact I recon its far better on that front that my Nokia E65 and my Imate JasJam.

Internet browsing is light years ahead of other internet capable phones as is the Exchange/Email interface, easy to Wright page long emails with correct formatting!!!.

Lack of Cut and Paste is a real shame as is the menu lags, however it is still faster and more stable than any other Win Mobile I’ve used(jasJam, JasJar, treo, HTC touch) Generally needing a restart every 2nd day or so to remain fully functional!

As we got our phones down here before anyone was even awake in the US I had no activation issues at all.

And on the comparison between this Smart Device and a poorly featured entry level Nokia is not even worth the time!, If you want a big screen and fast data your battery life is gona pay, and on 3G and WiFi it out lasts my JasJam by about 1/2 a day. If you want a piece of hardware that only takes and receives a call then that’s what you buy!

Great implementation of the Smart Phone Concept, with a few teething issues. IPhone far out performs its competition.

Well I just got my iPhone 3g on Friday (upgraded from a regular iPhone) and I haven't had any problems. My battery lasts all day with 3g on, my exchange server syncs seamlessly with my phone, as well as my personal email. I have the 16 gb version and keep music, movies, and podcasts on my phone and haven't had a single issue. Oh and I'm in America using the phone in Tulsa, OK!

iPhone 3G is the worst Mac product EVER!!!! Got 2 the second day. Both have to be rebooted ALL the time. Mine will not last more than 13 hours before it is dead, while my Blackberry Pearl would last 3 Days even after being 18 months old. Wow, apple really missed on this one!!! This phone is junk. Apple support is terrible, 30 minutes on hold...or they close. I have had Macs since the mid 80's, but no more!!!

Brian, on July 30, 2008

I cancelled my Sprint Account with my Sprint Instinct to go to the 3G and I could not be happier. The 3G is an excellent addtion to my job, I have only had one instance where the phone did not have excellent service in or out of a building and that was when I was in City Hall on the 3rd floor and had gotten on the elevator. I did loose the call around the second floor on the way down.

However, after reading ALL the messages above what I took away from them was.............Most of you are complaing because you don't know how to take the time and read before you complain.

1st - If you read the documentation about the 3G it clearly states that the "bars" of strength are not real repesentations. I have had 1 Bar and 6 Bars and my call quality is the same and perfect. The bars for 3G really do not mean much.

Might also add, you can search the internet, check email and text ALL while a phone call because of the 3G.

2nd battery life - If you again read the documentation tells you about different applications that cause battery life to drain. I set my email to manual, where it updates when I check my mail, elimated battery drain.

Also, plug your 3G in and in less than an hour or so you have full battery again.

This phone is for professionals, it is not a little toy for you to take pictures of you friends with and text with. It is a power tool for professionals.

As such, it kicks butt and takes names.

Also, about the battery life my Treo lasted MAYBE 3 hours of talk time. The Sprint Instinct piece of crap MAYBE 1.5 hours.

The 3G I am getting almost 5.5 hours of TALK TIME.

In closing, you whiners about not having the ability to upsize your memory card.

Please tell me ANY other phone that supports more than 2 gig. I could be wrong but I am not aware of ANY..........oh what did you say the "cheap" piece of crap 3G supports 8gig.

Ok just checking.

Had the 3g 16g for two weeks now. AT&T is spotty. Wished Verizon had the phone
I am not a tech freak so I'm just learning how to begin to utilize the features.
Two questions, can I get around the phone constantly asking for permission to use hot spots and second, I rec'd a pic text yesterday and got some weird alert from AT&T to go to a site and use user names and passwords to look a simple pic. What's up with that and is there an app around it?
Thanks for your help.

I upgraded to the 3G from the original iPhone the day it was available. I am the biggest Apple fan around and this upgrade was a mistake!

1. When accessing my contacts the thing freezes for about 15-20 seconds and I can't do anything with it. It will finally start working again after it decides to.

2. When I have good 3G coverage my voice coverage drops to 0-1 bars. If the bars do not have anything to do signal strength then why put it there?

3. The phone struggles to switch from 3G to WiFi, to Edge. Often, I am in the middle of a great 3G area and the phone reads that I am on Edge and the speed reflects that.

4. The ability to check my email has very much declined. I have two email accounts setup on the iPhone. Often it goes into a terminal "Connecting" state or a terminal "Checking for Email" state. Then, NOTHING! It just sits there with the spinning wheel.

5. Applications take forever to load. Yes, even the ones that come standard on the phone (Stocks, Weather, etc.)

6. Sometimes, on the home screen, it forgets to tell me that a missed call has left a voicemail. If I see that there was a missed call I have to go to the voicemail menu to see if one is there.

There are more but I won't bother with them right now.

There are some improvements:

1. The vibration is much stronger!

2. The speaker(s) are much better and louder

3. The phone is much nicer feeling in my hand. I much prefer this shape.

4. When the 3G works, it works pretty well

The battery life is not as good as the original but that was to be expected. When managed it is decent. I'm sure they are giving us the best battery life they can.

I believe most of the issues are isolated to the 2.0 firmware. My opinion is that it is buggy as hell and needs an immediate upgrade. Unfortunately, I got excited and upgraded my original iPhone to the 2.0 firmware. I am in the process of trying to get my original iPhone back to the 1.4 Firmware until Apple can get the iPhone 2.0 firmware straightened out. It simply causes me too much grief!

25

Joe, on August 02, 2008

It is totally impossible to have so many completely different opinions! Some people love the phone and have no problems and others say it is trash. Impossible!!! I have a headache reading so many whiners!! If you want a camera, buy a Cannon! If you want mobil internet buy a laptop! If you want memory, go to school!!!!! Quite complaining and get a life!!! People in Africa are starving!!

26

marco, on August 02, 2008

I kid you not when I say I lost count on how many iPhones I had to exchange. This should teach Apple a lesson or two when it comes to Quality Control. Three units alone had the light leak. Another a vibration issue. Another purple tint to the screen (even with the latest firmware build), Another had loose volume button and sleep buttons. I have not even taked about software yet because that would be an endless discussion... You can call me a troll... I got receipts of all my exchanges! Its really sad when a company (Apple) pokes @ Microsoft for software design (yet 2.0 is so buggy, MS Mobile would wins hands down). I love the phone still for design and ease of use... It seems Apple cant mass produce (they have proved it) and hope in 3 to 4 mths, it will get better. This whole experience has left a sour taste to my Apples... :(

27

marco, on August 02, 2008

Joe... your english is horrible..
If you want to write something about the phone... do so. If you want to whine about the people who actually own and having problems... get a life. Stop trolling!

28

orange paul, on August 02, 2008

changed from old iPhone to new and have been very dissapointed with performance. As I type out this text I'm constantly waiting for the cursor to catch up. Applications take minutes to open. Why can I no longer dictate when I check for new mail? The manual check button doesn't respond! I find I have to switch the phone off then on to get mail that's been waiting for a day or more.
And while we are on the subject the me.com trial has messed up my mail settings and took 48 hours to sync "over the air".
And a new problem now- as I've been typing the phone has decided to randomly delete the last 20 or so characters slowly, one by one as I type meaning I have to re-type.
Left home with a charged phone at 10am this morning and after 2 hours connected to cars Bluetooth the battery was dead.
Not good enough.

29

Eugene, on August 02, 2008

I was waiting for this phone for months, just like everyone else. I have had it for a week and am so dissapointed in this prodocut it is beyond belief. I have 3 ipods and a macbook, so I was surprised at the quality of this product. First of the bat is the battery. I noticed that if I use the internet and make some calls, my battery life was around 8 hours.... Last I checked I bought a mobile phone, not a land line to be connected all the time! The other big issue is the reception. There is an AT&T office that sells that phones and offers help and so fourth, about 6-8 blocks from where I live. Yet when I walk into my residential home, I have at best 2 bars, but usually no more than one. I have noticed that the calls drop a lot and have had to use the headphones that came with, to talk to people. Which is really disappointing. I have had AT&T for about 8 years and I have hated them all this time (a lot more since they merged AT&T and cingular), and now they have turned me against a brand I have learned to love, Apple. Honestly if they don't fix the software problems with the reception, or however it is they are going to fix the reception, then I will figure out a way to return this! This is one expensive toy... useless as a phone!!

kelsey, on August 03, 2008

okay i just bought the iphone, and idk what to do after reading these messages but i was wondering what the good things about the iphone 3g, because it seems like everyone is listing the bad....

31

kelsey, on August 03, 2008

oh and btw dont buy the phone from at&t pantech, its like new and it slides two ways, it may look cool...but it sucks!!!!! my three friends and i got it , and one mont later it broke down and they said it was water damage, but i only got it wet once and it was when i put it in a small pile of water on my bathroom counter. so dont buy it!!!!!!!!! im telling you and i have 6 people to back me up

32

Luke, on August 03, 2008

I really like the phone, but there are some problems which I'm running into as I switch from my trusty windows mobile device. I'm in the UK and do see wierd 3G behavior, but I have to say that I get pretty good call quality most of the time, regardless of number of bars showing.

33

Jamie, on August 04, 2008

Well I don't know why everyone is having such issues. I bought my IPhone about 3 weeks after it came out and i love it. I had a treo then i went to a Blackjack, I must say i love the graphics on this phone. Can't ask for anything better!! I will say that my 3G is not as good where i live but i think that's because of the towers!

34

dommerdog, on August 04, 2008

I just upgraded to the 3G from a Cingular 8125 (worthless). I didn't mind the 2 week wait for the phone and am generally pleased with it. However, there are two things that really bug me:

Battery LIfe - I'm astounded about how bad it is. 24 hrs max.

iTunes - for my first sync, like an idiot I plugged the 3G into my Windows Vista computer expecting windows sync to see the phone and let me sync. I did some checking and found I had to download iTunes. OK. HOWEVER, for the free download, Apple made me enter credit card information. That infuriated me.

I'm still trying to figure out the emailing pictures thing. So far, those I email show up in the body of my emails instead of as attachments. That's probably just my problem; however, I haven't figured it out yet.

I'm trying to get used to the touch screen for messaging - it is a project for anybody with fingernails (not long complicated/fake ones). I have to use my fingerpads instead of my fingertips, so I end up correcting a lot of typos as I go along. This is probably a universal problem with any touch screen phone, and I'll just have to get used to it.

My choice was this or a Blackberry. I hope I made the right one.

35

sojourner, on August 04, 2008

I am returning my 3G tomorrow and going back to my trusty BlackBerry. The 3g is not ready for the business environment. Battery life is unconscionable. Thats only one of multiple issues I have with the phone.

Cute toy.

Neal, on August 05, 2008

Apple released an update yesterday evening that "fixes bugs." Plug in the phone to your computer and open iTunes. You'll get a prompt to download and install 2.01. I'd expect these often until all the bugs are fixed.

39

Derrick, on August 05, 2008

I returned the iphone 3g after one week of usage. Despite the wonderful interface and great design the phone itself is far to glitchy to depend on. I have had numerous lock-ups, freezes and restarts. I spent many hours restoring the phone.

40

BRIAN, on August 05, 2008

Wow. So many problems out there. I have head mine for a bit and not one single issue. Everything works flawlessly. I have been a MAC user for years now and this pretty much follows suit with everything Mac I own. Solid as a rock with zero problems. Guess I am just lucky.

41

andy, on August 06, 2008

I got my iphone 3G on release day thanks to my wife waiting in line for 5 hours. I love the thing and the at&t service is awesome too!! The battery life could be better but its a mini computer people! My iphone lasts longer than any laptop battery will. Be realistic on your battery expectations!!

45

Janna, on August 07, 2008

Reading this forum to help decide if I will keep iphone or give up. Mine worked great for one week. I went to make a call and icon said No Service. Turned the phone on and off and now it won't work. I have tried every fix posted on ATT and Apple. I returned to an ATT corporate store and switched out SIM card which did not solve the problem. To make a very long story short ATT says its Apple's fault and Apple says its ATT's fault and I will potentially have to pay 10% (+ if I decide to go with a different phone) to replace a defective piece of equipment.

46

Augusto, on August 08, 2008

Hmm maybe give it a miss for now

47

Codrut Nistor, on August 08, 2008

I hate the plastic back. Aluminum back rulez! Anyway, the case seems to be only a minor problem, when looking up at all your different issues with this last iPhone from Apple...

48

Janna, on August 08, 2008

The Iphone went back to ATT and I opted for a different phone. After 4 trips to ATT and 1 to the closest Apple store it was decided that the phone was defective only no one wanted to take ownership of the problem. Apple would repair but not replace. ATT charges 10% restocking fee to reorder(they say it is per Apple.) At this point I would say BUYER BEWARE!!

Swedish http//di.se reported yesterday that:

"Iphone 3G has serious software problems in Swedish Telia network. Several support technicians at Telia confirm that there is a serious problem and the Iphone does not manage to establish the communication with the network at all. The problems seam to be related with the Iphones antenna and occurs even in the areas when the network is very strong.

The only way to use the phone in Swedish network is to disable the 3G in Iphone and use GSM/EDGE network."

This is what di.se says. My commentary: from the article it seams that they see that there is a problem with the 3G network but I they do not seam to know exactly what causes it. It is either the antenna or the SW.

From what you wrote on the comments to this blog - the phone works in some networks and does not work in others. One could also speculate that this is related to the incompatibility with certain base stations. For example I know that swedish Telia and US ATT use Ericsson base stations. Could it be so that the Iphone 3G has not been properly tested when it comes to the compatibility with different base stations.

It will be easier to find out if more of you say in what networks you get problems and in which you do not. Look also at the phones behavior while you are roaming - this can provide some valuable information.

52

Codrut Nistor, on August 09, 2008

Hmmm...so I see a lot of users ending up with a "3G iPhone," but without 3G! In the end, it may simply be the fact they didn't test the device enough...not to mention that plastic back - so much for a "tool for professionals," Brian! Don't you think professionals should have sturdy devices, instead of ones that get cracks appearing in just a few days of regular use?

53

I'm happy, on August 10, 2008

I think most of the problems reported here relate to USER fault. Not a very bright lot methinks

54

Codrut Nistor, on August 10, 2008

Usually a lot of problems are caused by a user thinking the User Manual is useless or trying to do things a device is not capable, but when your new iPhone gets cracks, stop working, loses signal when people around you talk using cheap cell phones without problems, and so on...that goes beyond "user fault," don't you think?

55

I'm happy, on August 10, 2008

No. I know Apple have sold millions of the things and the VAST majority of owners are delighted - so I guess it can't be the phone. Only leaves useless users... don't you think

I'm happy, on August 10, 2008

Reading your comments Codrut, seems you don't even have an iPhone and are just parroting what the other techno failures have written. What's the matter ... still living in a second rate Vista world and frustrated that other people just enjoy their IT products without all the MS crap?

57

KodrutZ, on August 11, 2008

Seeing is believeing - why wasn't there A SINGLE picture with a cracked iPhone before - instead, I read a lot of user reports praising the iPhone's durability. I may also be thinking various things about you, but since I don't know you, I am not saying them loud, which I also recommend you to do - you don't know anything about me, and the fact that I don't use an iPhone on a regular basis doesn't mean I never used one.

To I'm Happy, believe me dude I am not a stupid user who is not very bright, so keep your estimate of mine or anyone elses intelligence to yourself. Whether or not I just got a lemon or there is some design flaws in the Iphone is beside the point. The poor customer service from Apple in regards to standing behind their product is what I have an issue with.

At&t gets great service everywhere i go. I work in a building with satalite equipment and every floor has high tech equipment in them as well! I can use my 3g in the elevator and subway! Your phones must suck!!! Mine gets the job done!!! It works with all the adapters. It last all day while listening to music and while browsing the internet. I've been with Verizon since they first started when I was15 and now Im 25. At&t customers service is great and friendly. Just deal with it. Cell phones are imperfect!!! Nothing you can do. You want a good phone go to korea, or over seas. International is and are ahead of the U.S. by 5 years..... Holla back!!!!!

The iPhone 3G is a mini-computer, not a cell phone. the specs line up more with a pocketPC than a cell phone. its got music, chat, email, video, internet, huge bright screen, maps, and ability to run any application legally invented. And software updates will grow the platform if you can be patient.

If you think youre suppose to be able to surf the net, take pics, chat, and blab on the phone a few hours a day and not have to charge it daily, you don't get it! Do you expect your laptop to last days without charging, and it doesnt even make phone calls or weigh less than a pound! My bars bounce around, but i cn talk to people fine and when a call get dropped, i call the person back and say "sorry, dropped call..." and continue talking. Wow, that wasnt the end of out relationship... no duh!

You people know nothing about technology and engineering limits. Everyone wanted 3G, Apple gave it. It didnt even cost $500 this time! A damn humidifier costs $200!!! You get a beautiful portable computer for $200 then you complain about battery! Turn off 3G, Push email, and GPS and battery lasts over day! You can't have your cake and eat it too...

69

Doobietime, on August 14, 2008

Well....after reading all your comments, I have to say I agree with some of them. I recently got the phone and I think its the best phone I ever owned (except the battery life!). I had the BB Pearl before the iPhone and the battery life was great at first but lasted about 6 hours after using it for 6 month. I get great reception on the phone as well as no dropped calls. Picture quality of the camera could be a little better but it is ok, afterall its a phone not a camera. One think that really pisses me off though is the slow response from the keyboard. I would consider myself a pretty fast typer, but the iPhone's keyboard is very slow. Opening the contacts can take up to 3-4 seconds as well, which is not ideal since we are living in a real time technology age.
Overall, I am very impressed with the phone and it syncs beautifully through active sync with outlook in real time. You also have to take inconsideration that Apple is constantly coming out with patches and updates, which takes time to develop. FYI - I was never an apple lover but this is a great product.

Actually Im from montreal and I am pretty surprised by you comments on the phone. In the montreal area I get 4 bars sometimes dropping to 3 in the outskirts. 3g when turned on does really drain the battery. I turn 3g on only for internet then turn it back off. Besides that everything is perfect with the phone I recomend getting a case for the phone I ve already dropped mine twice with teh case on and it in one piece

iPhone, on August 15, 2008

lol
"AT&T raising the bar" ... as they advertise.
but I don't think so.
Remember!
AT&T was one of the mobile co. in NY and they left NY because their service was so bad (including customer service and reception).
Cingular was one of the worst service in NY (tons of dropped calls, un-reliable network).
And AT&T eats Cingular. Wrost company eats wroser company? well... nothing can be better except wrost. :D
AT&T is not raising the bar! It is de-raising the bar.
Total All, Apple is not as good as Microsoft.

If Apple is better than Microsoft, they won't even need to put Microsoft Exchange app in iPhone.
And they always say, they are better! lol
never happens!
sorry for those iPhone users. :)

Wade, on August 16, 2008

Got one of the first iPhones available from AT&T. I am very happy with the phone and features and there are some applications out there (many free) that are really useful.
The problem I have had with the phone is with signal strength. It only gives me 0-1 bar or cancels a call do to poor signal where I had a strong signal (5 bars) with my previous phones. I called Support and they told be to get another sim card because the sim card is used as an antenna for the phone. I used the paper clip and removed the card and put in and out several times to make sure it had a good contact (still has the problem). My wife has a 3g phone also which is having the same problem. I wish there was a way to amplify the antenna on the iPhone or get AT&T to amplify the signal to really "get more bars in places" as they advertise.

I love it. The only thing that blows is the battery life...Ive read it in almost every post in this little forum. Im lucky if I can get it to last from 7am to 10pm. Thats really bad. Also, to even get it to work that long, the 3G has to be turned off. My g/f has the 1st generation...she has ZERO problems...hopefully Apple gets these bugs worked out. They have updates through iTunes regularly....Im going to stick with it

76

Codrut Nistor, on August 18, 2008

Overall, it is an impressive product. During my talks with friends, whenever I have questions, I just google using iPhone and find the answers really quick: like how many medals did the U.S. won in Athens, where is Georgia and how did Sigmund Froyd look like? Iphone is great for personal and corporate email, however lacks some good business applications. my .02; save yourself the trouble. i had tons of problems, at first with activation, voicemail, including virtual voicemail, sound quality, freezing, the problems go on. Steve Jobs, you should have spent more money on product development then the commercials. as a business person I highly recommend either a windows mobile or Blackberry device. iphone lacks so many capabilities NEEDED for business or even person, NO TELENAVE!!
not to mention the endless fingerpointing between Apple and At&t.

I had the old iphone and upgraded to the new one....im having serious issues. I dont get the visual voicemail, i had issues with the internet on the edge and 3g networks, in wifi its great but how often do u have a wifi on the road, never.

When i updated my original iphone to the 2.0 software it started lagging and scrolling wouldnt rspond, typing was lagged....i upgraded cause i was ahving issues but now i have even more....i have 12 days to take it back im on the phone holding for apple customer care, if its not resolved by the weekend im goin back to the original.

Apple blames at&t....at&t blames apple....alll i can say is that i have the same plan and same service as before the only change is the phone....it doesnt take a genius to figure this one out.

My verdict is dont buy it, and this is coming from a person that prior to buying this phone spoke so highly of apple u would think i owned stock in it!

A, on August 20, 2008

I got the phone in Japan two weeks ago;

+ve's: sexy in black (why buy a white one?), massive screen, fast web access, great business email with an imap account, Outlook calander sync, touch screen is good, phone reception good, 3G network good, IPOD which plays while you type emails, Apps are cool, Abilty to reset the phone, GPS and goggle map (had to use it the other day in Tokyo, worked brilliantly), Weather this selectable cities (same with the Clock),

-ve's: Had a problem with the unit going into standby (black screening) while I was using it so had the phone replaced (it's only 2 weeks old!!!, it turned out to be a software problem), Syncing wih different computers (prob a user problem), heavy, lack of available accessories like compatible sounds systems and holders, no cut n' paste, no storage of documents, no cut 'n paste (did I say that already??), no ability to attach documents to emails, can't attached multiple pictures (my midget little 3G Samsung 708SC could do this?!?!), sometimes slow due to lack of RAM, Outlook contacts doesn't snyc well (but I reckon this is a problem with MS), battery life (but what do you expect for a big screen), some Apps make the phone unstable (but these were downloaded from i-Tunes so Apple should have tested them!), no video phone call (again, my Samsung had this),

Yes, the phones here and in Korea are light years away from the norm e.g.Nokia (dont get me wrong, I like Nokia's for natural ease of function, but they are just a phone) and if I wanted to watch TV I would get a Japanese phone and watch it in digital. But the phones here don't match the abilities of the i-Phone for email and web surfing.

This phone sits between a business phone/PDA and a great toy. If Apple fixes the slow load, lack of documentation storage and cut n' paste then this will be a great tool.

89

Lucy-Anne, on August 21, 2008

I am having quite a few issues with my iphone 3g. I upgraded from the original iphone and all its caused me is no end of problems!

Here are a few:

- When going through my phonebook it freezes for a few seconds
- When writing a text it occassionally decides to go really slow and writing a text takes double the time
- When I am on a call it decides to freeze and the screen turns black
- The 3G signal isnt great either

I then decided to upgrade the software and I go onto my itunes.. just connected and it was in sync and now my phone has completley frozen and its just the black screen with the spinning apple logo!! GRRRR I am sooo NOT impressed!!!

BUT when it is working fine I am pleased with it!

I'm from Canada, Montreal and I've had my 3G iPhone for 3 days now, I love it. The only problem is the battery life but I think I've abused it enough the first few days and I may not be able to judge "normal use" just yet.
The lack of videoconferencing is also a bummer.

I'm on Fido/Rogers and I know for a fact that they use Ericsson base stations (I think someone mentioned a problem with the 3G chipset and the Ericsson base stations) I don't think it's a problem here in Canada/Montreal, my phone has 5bars most of the time on 3G, the minimum it would drop to is 3 (stable). Off course it does go from 5 to 1 bars a *couple* times day, just as my SonyEricsson(quad band) and Nokia(quad band) did.

I personally don't think it's an iPhone problem. The battery life looks OK if you use it as a portable internet device, GPS, and listen to music... c'mon it's as slim as a Pop tarts :) give them some credit for all the features packed in that small gadget which does almost EVERYTHING you would expect from a Phone, Organizer, email, music, camera, internet, GPS, tons of apps for free. Stocks, currency, IM, Internet radio stations, Diction nary, Budget apps.

so I have had my 3G for two days now. i must admit battery life is short BUT--what do you expect??? you guys are saying how it sucks soooo bad but what i dont think youve realized yet is that this is not your little run of the mill Nokia or flip phone. Its a mini computer. One that has a very high level of screen brightness, which may add to the quick battery drainage....amazing internet, it holds EVERYTHING and when you have it youre probably on it a lot. a few glitches are expected. I have not had any issues with it so far. and pleease stop compring it to blackberry, when its obviously so much better and...sexy :)

I don't own a iphone, but admit they look really cool. But that said, there are many cars that look great but I wouldn't buy because they aren't reliable or made very well. Apple normally makes very good products, but at cost premiums. When they have to compete at the same price level as others...quality obviously takes a hit. Ever hear of the Apples to Oranges comparison? Guess the new iphone is more orange than apple.

Wow, in reading all the bad reviews I wonder why I'm so pleased with mine!! I live in Canada and have no problems with reception unless I'm in a fairly remote place. Sometimes it even works in the elevator of my building, which is weird! I find it incredibly user friendly, very intuitive, picture quality is fine (I mean, it's a phone people!), selection of apps is great. A couple crashes from apps, not the phone itself. Some of the apps though surprise me with their awesome graphics. No problems whatsoever with my touch screen. The internet is perfect for surfing for those times when you are away from your laptop and the GPS is great... remember, it's a phone. As for the battery, I have a charger in my vehicle, one at home and one at work. When the phone is sitting there, I turn the backlight off and the battery lasts forever. I mean, who surfs and plays a ton of games when you have no access to a charger? I have a life... I am so pleased and love my iPhone, but it's not my life! LOL

99

kittah kat, on August 23, 2008

I think some of you guys/gals are missing the point, Apple promised corporate users a mobile work horse. If I just needed it for the bare essentials then yes, its sexy, beautiful and the best in class. Those of us who need to be available and able to make, take and receive calls, its vital! the two companies (apple, att) need to get their act together, ASAP. But for the canadian to say its not my life, for some busy professionals it is! Sorry but in some American cities its skyscrapers galore; canadians its nothing but open space ...(hope you can take a joke canuck!)

This phone sucks. I've endured exceptionally bad reception in areas where signal should be good, extremely low battery life with 3G turned on, missing voice mails, uncommanded reboots, frozen menus, etc. I tried to get help from ATT numnuts, and they hang up on you after 30 min hold time. Holy shit! I wasted 90 minutes on that. I have ported my number back to US Cellular and will be returning my iphone at the first possible opportunity.

Returning 4 iphones tomorow (day 29) and switching back to Verizon. All 4 iphones have constant dropped calls, IM's that never get to person I send them to (tried sending from my wife's to mine), "call failed" constantly. In addition to all of this, when I was sold the phones I was told that the IPHONE data plan was not required. A week after having the phones my 12 year old got instant message form AT&T saying the $30/month plan was being added to bill. As primary number I was never contacted about this. I specifically asked the sales person "if my daughter users her phone to get on the net at my house, on our wireless network, and didn't use it out in the real world, do we have to have the $30/month plan?" He said no, sold me the phones, activated them without the plan because he said it wasn't required. Now my 12 year old got charged $144/data use AND they are adding the $30/month plan to all phones. Also, he said there would only be a $36 activation fee on first one and all 4 show activation charge on my bill. Luckily I had him print out and write on each individual receipt there wouldn't be an activation charge.

So, I am taking advantage of my 30 day buyer remorse option and going back to Verizon who said they will refund my $85 earlier termination fee and allow me to go back to my old contract that ends in December.

I hate it since I own a lot of Apple stock.

I live in Spain, we have been waiting for the iphone for years...... this is the first time that our local cell operator has offered. I waited two months to get it and I absoloutely love it. I am a prior I-touch user, and I feel that the combination of a phone in the itouch is absolutely remarkable, not to mention the flexibility of having email and net surfing available. The only problem I see is the fact that the battery only lasts about 24 hours and needs to be re charged. I would like to know if keeping the phone on the dock constantaly will affect the life of the battery. Thanks

114

KodrutZ, on August 26, 2008

Good question, but since it's a Lithium-ion polymer battery, its life is over 1000 load cycles, and explosion risks are much lower than the ones implied by "classic" Lithium-ion ones. As far as I know, if you keep the phone on the dock all the time, your battery life may suffer, but I can't bet on that. Anyway, I think it's going to be all right for at least 18 months. Did you ask your local cell operator? They probably know more about this issue than I do...or not. Just be sure to get back here and share with us what you find! :)

I have been an avid fan/user/promoter of apple products since my first mac laptop that i purchased in 1999. I have owned an iphone since January, and while i am enamored with the design and overall idea of this phone, i have become truly disappointed. Since upgrading to the 2.0 firmware it has been just short of a nightmare. The reception is spotty at best and have experienced numerous dropped calls being in a stationary place, and an overall weak signal (except in the ATT or Apple store. The safari application has crashed countless times while surfing the net (no apps used). Switching between applications in many cases is interminably slow. Contacts is slow in recognizing commands. Websurfing can only be considered on wifi status(i have resisted the 3G for the reasons that many have stated above). Edge is turrrrrrrrrtle slowwwwwww!!!! I hope in the coming months Apple and ATT figure these issues out or i can see this being disastrous for both parties and making my way back to my tried and true Blackberry/Tmobile service.

vinot, it's not about throwing away your money here, it's about getting a reliable system. I have nothing against BOSE, for example - they are extremely expensive, but they surely give you a run for your money! ;)

It seems that the new iPhone works fine if you turn the 3G network setting off.
So then what was even the point of switching from the original iPhone to the new one? Ugh. I'll probably take mine back. :/

I'm happy, on August 28, 2008

Still no problems with my iPhone. Wonder what all you people are complaining about. 3G - works. Speed - fine. Wi-fi - as quick as my desktop computer. Apps - great range and mostly free! iPod - couldn't be better. Form factor - brilliant. MobileMe - couple of glitches but mostly works great, Phone - well I can call people and speak to them and they can call and speak to me. What else do you want?
I say - what's not to love about iPhone

zenne, on August 29, 2008

What a total waste of money and excitement on the new iPhone 3G phone!!! The 3G is hardly ever on. The old iPhone worked by far better - less to no crashing, more signal strength. Apple sure went backwards on this one!

KodrutZ, on August 29, 2008

zenne, it would be very useful to tell us about your carrier and location, it seems some people are very happy with signal strength and 3G signal...

I work at an ATT store and I can help a few of you out... I don't like some things about the iphone; no picture text (mms) unless with other iphone users,
no cut & paste,
no flash or adobe support (meaning large part of the internet is not accessible on iphone),
new design rends 95% of old docking stations useless, some app instability, no camera flash,
no battery replacement (manually),
battery life isn't ideal (a phone should last all day with an hour of talking),
only landscape keyboard,
email feature only allows one contact at a time,
no bluetooth stereo,
itunes is the only way to transfer files on/off computer (creates various problems with file transfers),
You're required to have an iphone data plan ($50 minimum monthly) when you purchase an iphone (this is on top of your voice plan, text, gps, insurance, PTT, etc...)
difficult and expensive to replace accessories, battery, have phone fixed, or customize in any relevant way,
touch screen is thermal and not pressure sensitive (means you can't use a stylus/pen/paper clip to navigate your phone if you can't get the hang of the buttons with your fingers).
And the biggest problem I see with the iphone is that Apple won't give ATT authority to be the phone's responsible seller. We sell the phone FOR apple, but we aren't allowed to do anything to fix it, which means they can blame a lot of things on us if they don't know why it's not working, and we can do the same for them. Whatever the case is, whoever's fault it is that you're having the problem, neither company will take responsibility. I'm not knocking either company - I'm just saying that some of the people employed with both companies will tell you things that aren't true, or that they think are correct because we're both limited... It's just a "pass the buck" situation, the people who are trying to help you can only help you on specific issues. I'm not an apple employee so I don't know how they work, just like apple employees don't know how ATT works. A vicious and repeatable cycle emerges...
The iphone is a vanity type device, in that there are plenty of better products that aren't as cool or stylish. That being said there are some things that I like about the iphone;
best internet surfing I've seen on a phone (on the sites that the phone can display without flash or adobe support, of course)
high screen res (480x320) so ur pictures and things look better on the iphone than they will on other phones
wifi capability (very few phones have this feature currently HTC tilt, bberry bold)
it's a nice looking device. I'd definately sleep with it.
If you're a mac user, you can use the phone off the bat.
They've added a lot of neat apps and made them easy to acquire and use (if you don't mind paying for 'em)
On that note - I think some of the people in here have made some excellent points... The 3G reception bar isn't your indicator of call reception, it's for the internet so you'll probably still get reception talking when the 3G bars are low. If 3G's off, that's another story...
The battery sucks, yes, but if you're using it as a phone ONLY and not playing on it all day then you'll be ok. It's the combination of having an average battery in an above average phone.
Also, there are lemons, folks... Some phones of any brand just won't work right for whatever reason. And remember that this is the first generation of the new phone; just like all other processor based electronics, the first batch is risky. I wouldn't buy one until the 2nd or 3rd generation personally, and I get a discount...
The iphone is a device you have to learn about before using if you plan on doing more than making it a toy. So if you're rich, go buy one and have fun, but if you're looking for a PDA type phone, study up...

Dan, you're The Man! Thank you very much for clearing some things out for our readers! You're free to drop by anytime, you're welcomed! ;)

131

Dan the Man, on August 29, 2008

Hey, thanks. No problem... If there are any questions I'd be happy to answer 'em for you guys too. (As well as I can, anyway...) I think it's good for people to be informed about the stuff instead of slinging opinions around.
P.S. Another back and forth argument I see all over the place... Some people get great 3G service, some don't, it has to do with the type and amount of towers in your local area. Not all towers are 3G and not all areas even have 3G towers. If you NEED the 3G internet speed contact your local retailer to get tower information. Or find somebody with ATT and have 'em stand around where you plan on residing to check their service.
P.P.S. All phones are equipped with different types of antennas, which is why some phones on the same carrier perform better than others. Long story short, the phone processing, the towers, and the phone's antenna are why some of you get or don't get comparable service coverage.
Just a heads up...

“AT&T raising the bar” … as they advertise.
but I don’t think so.
Remember!
AT&T was one of the mobile co. in NY and they left NY because their service was so bad (including customer service and reception).
Cingular was one of the worst service in NY (tons of dropped calls, un-reliable network).
And AT&T eats Cingular. Wrost company eats wroser company? well… nothing can be better except wrost. :D
AT&T is not raising the bar! It is de-raising the bar.
:end quote

Having lived in NYC all my life this could not be further from the truth. The worst network in NYC has an always will be Sprint, and they took nextel along with them. Nextel was incredible prior to the merger then service went from 4 steady bars anywhere to 1 if you were lucky......
I should know, I had Nextel then switched to AT&T. As far as connectivity I could not be happier. I RARELY drop a call in NYC on the AT&T network.
In regards to this new iPhone, Dan pretty much summed it up: never buy something when it 1st comes out!!!!! I love my Macbook Pro 17" but I refused to be one of the suckers buying the 1st gen.
My only gripe with AT&T as a network is their lack of offering phones that would more than likely force Apple to reconsider their business relationship in regards to all of the customer complaints due to "lemons." Apple knows they have a highly sought after product and they have AT&T by the balls with that little bit of info. If I walked into AT&T tomorrow and they offered the 8 or 16gig Samsung Omnia or at the very least the Nokia N95 8gig NAM (or the long awaited N96 due out soon), heck even a preorder of the iPhone killing Sony Xperia I'd happily plop money down, instead they give you phones like the blackberry, the htc tilt, or the motorola Q9 as alternatives. HTC makes the Touch Pro not to mention the new Palm Treo pro, give your customers these options and watch Apple buckle with their b.s. demands.

p.s. Dan we need to talk, my 2 year contract with AT&T is up in a few weeks, and I'd like to know as much info on plans as I can from someone on the inside.

My Rzr was on the fritz...I went to ATT to get a phone...upgrade to a blackberry...so that I can text easier...maybe even get some internet capabilities. One of the reps said..."Have you ever thought of getting the iphone?"...so he goes with his spiel of showing off the one he has...I walked out of the store with an iphone and troubles the first 4 HOURS of purchasing the darn thing...boy...it sure would have been GREAT if the guy told me you have to have an itunes account and sync this albatross of a gadget to itunes to get on to the web and email. I read above they take your credit card number...NO WAY...to get a "free" itunes account RIDICULOUS. I took the phone back the same day...hey...I just wanted a phone that had text/internet capability...some how I ended up leaving the store with the phone again...looking at it and just hating its guts...a person above commented that this is a phone...ah...heck no...it is a COMPUTER with phone capabilities. I really don't want the HASSLE of having to hook up this monstrosity to my computer just to get the basic capabilities to work...and then pay 35 bucks more a month for it. This things has literally/physically made me sick. Its going back...its not worth it...everything that glitters is not gold.

For those that are 'unable' to send a picture message with your iPhone, try this... say you have a friend with Verizon, have him send you a picture message with your iPhone e-mail instead of your number. The picture message will arrive in your e-mail. You will notice that the return address will say something like 8312391111@vzwpix.com. You may then send a picture using this as the 'to' and said picture will arrive to them as a picture message. All cell services have a routing server...

ex apple die-hard, on September 04, 2008

I have loved and used apple products for years. I'll (hopefully) never go back to pc's. That being said, this product is one of the most disappointing ones I've ever wasted my money on. I can't recommend any more strongly that you do not buy one. Seriously. Don't do it.

The sad thing is that I REALLY love my iPhone... when it works. I hate my iPhone the rest of the time. I bought mine on day two of launch. For the last month, I have been getting terrible application freezes. Holding down the home button for over 10 seconds mostly works. Mostly... More often than not nothing happens, and I have to do a hard reset by holding down the sleep/wake button and the home button. Sometimes it boots right up. But not usually. I have taken it in to the apple store several times now to get relief. I have went literally days without a phone, because I usually can't get an appointment to see anybody at the local mac store unless I wait for a few hours, or make an appointment for the next day. I wish it were as easy as just resyncing the phone to iTunes. Unfortunately, iTunes does not recognize that there is a phone attached when the phone won't load up past the black screen of death (with a little brushed aluminum apple logo to curse at.) Worse than that, is if my non loading iPhone is plugged in, I get the dreaded spinning wheel on my iTunes, meaning I can't restore or do anything with it myself. Once, they did a restore to factory settings at the apple store, and when I got home to restore my back up file, it said the back up file was corrupted. I got to waste another several hours of my life adding contacts and music to my phone, in addition to losing all new contacts that I have added since I bought the phone. I hope those people call me, 'cause I ain't got their numbers now. Flash forward to a week later when I had the same problem again, and after going 2 days without a phone, they gave me a new phone at the apple store. Yippee, right? NO. He told me not to even try to restore, but to set it up as a new phone. Again, several hours of syncing contact, music, and applications. Great. Fine. I did it. So why am I up at 5AM today googling "iPhone 3g problems"? Black screen. White logo. No phone. Again. Should I go back to the apple store? I ought to throw this damn brick through their window.

I have been a loyal apple customer for years, and am angry as hell. I miss my RAZR. I love what my iPhone is capable of, and really just want it to work. When it is working, it is simply amazing. It just doesn't work often. When it doesn't work, I still need a phone. I am so jealous of you people who only have 3g connectivity problems. At least you can take a little walk or drive and use your phone. I'm left with nothing but a pretty white small screen tv set, that only plays one movie, of a little brushed aluminum apple. I hate this movie.

steel, on September 04, 2008

I have the original iphone and it has performed without fail. I will be the first to admit that its not perfect. Especially by my standards, which consistently demand perfection. However, I am not here to complain about the iphone. I am simply here to express my concern about AT&T's data network. I feel that the network towers were hastily upgraded for the 3g iphone roll-out date. Since the day of the new iphone release, I have been having random and texting lag. I have spoken with AT&T technical support several times regarding this issue. After a few weeks of being passed around through several support representatives I was given a solution. The technicians wanted to know exact dates, times, and phone numbers of the texting lag incidents. So, after taking well documented notes for a solid week and letting them research it on their end, I was given a solution. Unfortunately I missed the callback from the AT&T support rep., but they did leave me a message. They basically explained that the issue was not on their end, and that the problem was being generated by whomever I was texting with at the time. Now, I understand that AT&T did their best to upgrade their towers for the 3g iphone release date, and that it was not fully completed. Many places around the U.S. are still not fully upgraded. In fact, I have read that a total of five crewmen died during the initial tower upgrades. Their network is getting overwhelmed with the data connections from the 3g iphone and there is nothing anyone can do. Which would explain my intermittent text lagging problems. In closing I would like to mention that one of the AT&T support reps that I spoke with over the last few weeks suggested that I buy the 3g phone because the connection to their servers is faster. Therefore I wouldn't have any text delay. I am sorry, but I still laugh at that. Bottom line...3g access speed, a throughput claiming to be 7.2 Mbps, is Apple's wet dream sales pitch. If you are achieving 802.11b network speeds with your 3g iphone, then contact me right away because hell just froze over; or you live in a dream city, surrounded by 3g capable towers. No, you're probably getting closer to 1 Mbps rather than 3. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Tony, on September 04, 2008

I got my 3G a month ago and it's been a nightmare. ATLEAST 8 dropped calls a day even after I changed my sim card and went through all the issues. The GPS is accurate to a quarter mile, WOW. Lame.

I switched from a blackberry and I use my phone mainly for email and it is so unreliable. I can't send messages now only recieve. Its driving me nuts. The iphone is an amazing idea and it taked phones to a whole new level but the network is not ready. I hope they fix this soon...

the iphone 3g is a great product all together...
it has some interesting features with eyetracking style...
but my friends before using or purchasing anything first of all you need to read the manual and secondly you need to know what you are trying to get out of something you want to purchase.
i hope if you wat to have a balance of style and feature iphone 3g is the best you can ever get till now.
1. it has huge memory by far than any one till now
2.most of the features of smart phone (may not all)
3.it supports 3g and if 3g has some problem of its own then iphne should not be the one to blame.
4. it has a full function iphone as a plus than other smart phone.

so first make sure with whom you want to compare ?
you are comparing it wih all the top notch smart phones and asking for heavy battery life with extreem clarity of sound, picture or fastest internet experience.
by my opinion who was an ex NOKIA engineer iphone is truely good but you have to know how to use it and you should have a balance among all your requirement as some of them are mutually exclusive or inversely proportional.

Bottom line go ahead an buy it if you want style, power and professionalism

I'm happy, on September 06, 2008

i've got an idea. If, like most people who bought the iPhone, you think it is a great mobile phone with a heap of features and extra apps not available on any other 'phone, with a clean, stylish, intuitive UI that's a joy to use and a design form factor that makes it a beautiful device to hold and look at, then be happy.

If you think it's a piece of junk TAKE IT BACK AND STOP WHINING!

my family just bought 3 3g iPhones and none of phones could recieve phone calls or text messages from any other carriers other than at&t. first we tried to go to the at&t store in which we got them and we told a guy about it and he said "we cant garantee text messages or phone calls from other carriers" and when we told them thats BS and that if thats the case were just going to return them and the guy at the store just shrugged his shoulders and said ok. then we called customer support and the lady told us that the number had to have the 1 in front of the number and the area code to work (which wouldnt work well for my dad because hes starting a business and it would be harder to advertise it that way) but when we got off the phone we tryed to text and call our iphones with our verizon phones using the 1 and the area code (and my friends sprint phone) and we didnt get them so we called back. then my dad was saying if he doesnt get helped then hes going to return all 3 phones and the guy on the phone says well we cant research your problem further if you dont plan on keeping the phones -.- *and you gotta remember this is 3 phones were talking about thats a thousand bucks there being jerks over =p* so yea we plan on going off verizon for a few months and see if the problems are fixed if so well get them then.

Lauren, on September 09, 2008

Misery loves company it seems. As a former Verizon customer, I was initally excited to switch over the ATT with the iPhone. Sure, touch keys needed a little getting use to but overall, yes, a revolutionary phone it was.

I upgraded my former iPhone to the 3G, despite the increase in plan costs, since I experience water damage issues with the former. I've only had my 3G for 2 weeks and since then I've been experiencing a myriad of issues that seem to be resonating through the pages of this site. Whilst I am getting intermittent Service/No Service cues even though sitting atop my desk not touched, the iPhone also randomly decides to play my iPod music at it's leisure almost mysteriously. Oh yes, and not to mention the "Repair Needed" screen that showed up 4 - 6 times in the past 7 days.

Despite resetting & resyncing the phone, only for it to perform as it should for 15-30 minutes, it goes back to a possessed state and scrolls the aluminum apple until it's done throwing a fit which has been 1/3 of the day for the past 3 days. Once this happens, forget trying to sync it with iTunes because it won't even recognize that there's a phone attached. Oh yes, and did I forget to mention that when the 3G is not doing all these other things I've described, it likes to treat me with a Call Emergency screen key pad displayed in various languages? The irony of it all is that you can't call anywhere because it won't do anything.

After having dealt with these experiences over the past 2 weeks, I've decided that my patience has taken it's toll. Whilst I'm not a techie nor a High User of all functions of the iPhone, I still am in need of a phone that works consistently for me to communicate via voice, text or data. I really wanted this to work but unfortunately it was not meant to be. Sorry Apple, This customer is heading to Blackberry.

Apple charges 199$ to replace the screen and charges 29$ for a temp phone.
I think they should replace the screen for FREE at least twice before they start charging. I mean who hasn't dropped their cell???? Its clearly a way for them to make tons of money. they must get hundreds of thousand of people dropping their phones all over the world, and are sitting happily exploiting their loyal clientele. Tony, on September 18, 2008

I just picked up the new iphone in Japan ....thought it was broken because there was no sound
or vibe for incoming mail even though the sound setting for incoming
mail is on..went back to the shop and she said that the iphone doesn't have sound for incoming mail......sure it makes a sound when I retrieve the mail manually
but it is quite a pain to always have to look if to see if I got mail...a simple upgrade please would be most appreciated...and since I am living in Japan some free emicon application would be nice..kids stuff but still nice to have because even emicons are more fun than most of the new applications I looked at and they all use them in mostly every email that I got on my last cellphone here for the last 7 years.... and why Apple decided to make a phone..maybe the only one in the world that I know of without a place to hang a strap so I can hang it around my
neck and not always worry about dropping it is quite the mystery..maybe they have a case for that that I can buy..I guess I am not paying enough at 90 bucks a month...I could ramble on about the camera with no flash or zoom and no video and a calculator that doesn't even have a percentage key..movies that I can't seem to upload from my hard drive and on and on...hmmm guess I did ramble on and will have to pick up a new model that I am sure will be out next year...... guess I will have to stick to old school emicons :-(

174

Cezar, on September 18, 2008

Maybe you should wait a little for an update to come out. That will be the only solution for you. Although it's strange how many problems you've encountered so far.

175

Tony, on September 18, 2008

Thanks Cezar...it is just a little annoying losing some of the features that my 7-year- old cellphone had....There is talk of Softbank here in Japan coming out with an iphone model that is more up with the times here..the market here is for young people and even having a phone that you can't hang stuff on turns them off...forget about any good features....they want a strap and a place to hang their favorite little things on...probably have to drop a few hundred bucks to change models next year..till then will have to keep checking my iphone to see if any emails have come in....

Sierra Monica B., on September 18, 2008

I'm sorry to hear you are so disappointed, Tony!

177

Tony, on September 18, 2008

No worries Sierra Monica B.
Let me know how I can upload movies from my hard drive or even
video clips from my camera and it will cheer me up :-)

178

Codrut Nistor, on September 18, 2008

Basically, I think this should be made through iTunes. What did you try so far?

179

Tony, on September 18, 2008

Thanks Codrut Nistor..

Have some videos on itunes that I want to upload but when I click
on videos in the iphone menu it says you have no rented videos on file.....can't seem to find anyway that I can upload the vids to iphone..

180

KodrutZ, on September 18, 2008

Leaving iTunes aside, can't you go to the Windows Explorer/any file manager you have and access the phone just as you would do with some USB device? For example, I always load my files to my mp3 player as I would copy them to a USB stick, instead of using some software to sync the files and lose a lot of time doing that.

181

Tony, on September 18, 2008

Thanks KodrutZ...you would think that would work..usually when I put in a USB chip it shows up on my desktop and I just drag files in...the iphone doesn't show up anywhere I can find other than itunes....

182

Tony, on September 18, 2008

Thanks for all the advice...I will have to go to a mac store and ask if uploading movies and files other than purchased ones can be done on the iphone.. and maybe they can also tell me a way that I can be alerted to emails...been trying all ways that I know how to and I give up..cheers...

183

Cezar, on September 18, 2008

Another solution will be to go back to the store where you've bought your iPhone then ask for help. Go tell them your problem. Make it a story (you know how to do it better). Tell them you cannot upload anything in it or even worst - your desktop not shows you anything when you plug the cable in. Tell them to make some tests in front of you. It should help you in some way... or maybe the USB cable it's the problem? What do you think ? Give it a try anyway ...

184

Tony, on September 18, 2008

Thanks Cezar..the only thing that they know how to do at the shop I bought it is sell the iphone and make sure that they have all your credit card details correct and tell you that you have to keep it for two years and can't bring it back if there is a problem....that is the end
of their service...was my fault for buying it because my old cellphone crashed and I thought I was getting the best cellphone on the market.....not!
Should have looked into it at least a little bit but I am a mac person and thus just picked one up not thinking there would be much of a problem..

185

Cezar, on September 18, 2008

"They're making sure you have all your credit card details correct and tell you that you have to keep it for two years and can’t bring it back if there is a problem….that is the end."

YEP!

It happened just the opposite - you didn't get that "best cellphone on the market".

"My old phone crashed ..."

Don't tell me was an iPhone too!

If you seek for a good cellphone, I recommend you to take a look at Nokia N96!!!

Sorry for your money loss.

186

Tony, on September 18, 2008

Thanks Cezar...the old phone was a docomo p505i....the phone was still good but the external keyboard that I had broke for the third time
and as I hate typing on a cellphone with my thumb I thought the iphone would be better..is a bit faster with the spellcheck but I could still type a lot faster with the old phone with the external keyboard...
As they don't make external keyboards here for new cellphones I got the new iphone...I will give it till Christmas and if I still don't like it I will have to go back to the shop and try to get rid of it and look at what else they have and suck up the loss.....was just reading some comments on shameonapple.com Had I read that I would still be happy with any other practical cellphone on the market that are free and have charges of around 30 bucks a month...

187

Cezar, on September 18, 2008

Err, didn't noticed why you've been stick with the iPhone and that was just because of his keyboard. Well, I wish you good luck in your journey ...what can I say more :)

Have fun and pay more attention next time - making tests with the seller before you buy something it's a good thing, you know.

188

Mizz X, on September 18, 2008

I really wanna buy the new Iphone 3g and despite all of the comments I've heard I'll go ahead with it...I'm buying it with an extra battery and the phone will be unlocked so it works with any network..will let you all know how it goes..plus i get my money back if i have any problems within 30 days....What have I got to lose....

189

JuLius Devereaux, on September 18, 2008

hmmm.. I wonder why so many people were so enthused to buy the iPhone pronto without scrutinizing what it really could do. Their advertising hype must have worked pretty well !!!

Don't get me wrong. I am a certfied Mac & Apple lover. My romance with Steve Jobs' gizmos started in school way back in 1979 when I became a trainee in Citibank where I later became a part of the group that used Apple II to developed their worldwide network called CitiFlash. This was ten years before Tim Berners-Lee was recognized to have a workable network. I imagine that he must also have used the Apple II in writing his protocols.
I still love Apple as my office room has 3 Macs, while I have four at home. We all grew up using Apples which we hold close to our hearts.

But definitely NOT with the iPhone.

Presently, I am trader in East Asia, based in Hongkong, and go around East Asia regularly. My celebrated iPhone 3G turned to be a very primitive gadget compared to my other mobile phones. Here's what I get simultaneously from my other handheld cellphones:
I watch a dci-fi movie; i get a steady stream of stock market quotes; I can look at a map of the epicenter of a recent earthquake; and read my SMS from clients. Yes, all at the same time. I often make video calls to my clients and switch to my edited video to show my products. I get through the turnstile at the Metro-rail by beaming my phone to the sensor. In "backward countries" like the Philippines, Malaysia, & Thailand, I transfer funds in various banks, pay my bills and shop at the malls using my mobile phone. Any of these, my iPhone 3G cannot do.

I always have to hurriedly put the phone back to my bag as people always stare at me when I use the iPhone. You should see the quizzical expression on their faces with their knitted eyebrows !!!

190

Mizz X, on September 18, 2008

LMAO at the quizzical look on their faces!!!
Well there's a special iphone 3g edition now...I think ill get that one.....

191

JuLius Devereaux, on September 18, 2008

What model are you talking about? It's the celebrated new iPhone 3G that I made a comment on.

If I were to make a list of the best 10 mobile phones, the iPhone 3G might not even make it to my list. There are PLENTY of smartphones here in Asia that are not sold in the USA. Mobile communications in the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand, is even more sophisticated than in the US, let alone Japan and Korea where mobile phones use the WCDMA platform which is FAR BETTER than anything Europe and USA can ever have.

This looks like comparing the soap-box derby wooden cars to the Ferraris and BMWs in Formula !.

192

Mizz X, on September 18, 2008

Yea im also talking about the iphone3g but theres a special limited edition...you can google it....

193

JuLius Devereaux, on September 18, 2008

Mizz X,

Your special edition iPhone 3G is a prostitute clothed in Prada, nothing more. The specs are the same.

Would you pay Ferrari prices for a wooden soap-box derby car?

FYi: Each of my other three smartphones has a camera with 5/8/10Megapixels, all with Xenon flash, autofocus, and 4/5/6x digital zoom: audio/video streaming/recording/playback; 3G video call; bluetooth stereo; bluetooth tethering; Multi-Media Service (MMS); SMS service ( most popular in all of Asia); Voice Command; removable micro SD card; and all are switchable to the best protocol WCDMA that is not available in both the USA and Europe. oh, BTW, each of my phones cost less than US$150. And each mobile phone can do all that the iPhone can.

Unfortunately, US will not get any of the mobile phones that are available here. The best you can lay your hands on would be the RiM Blackberry 9000 Bold which is by comparison to the iPhone, Special Edition or ordinary, very stable.

194

Sierra Monica B., on September 19, 2008

Lately, with all this publicity from Apple, I started to be very interested in this perfect cell phone, even thinkin' on getting one, but after reading all your complaints....I'd better relax and wait for these problems to be solved first. Still i have a question for iPhone 3G's users and ex-users: Did you try to ask for explanations from AT&T and Apple? If yes, what exactly were their excuses? Cause if they gave your money back, it means they agree they have real problems that can't be solved in the near future... and it's not a good image...

dan the man, on September 20, 2008

I've posted a couple times here to try to help people out with some of their iphone problems. (I work for AT&T.) I've decided the following after dealing with iphones for these past months...
The iphone has a better chance of failing than nearly any other phone I sell.
The iphone is a toy, and primarily bought for vanity rather than business.
The iphone is amazing. When it works.
AT&T sells the iphone for apple, but appple won't let us have full responsibility for it. This is why a lot of you guys get jerked around from both companies when you have a problem. It's a $#!tty system, I know.
Expectations are far too high for the iphone, and coupled with apple's inability to deliver on customer concerns from the last iphone, I doubt I'll ever purchase one. And I like apple products. And I would get a discount.
It sucks that so many people are unhappy, my best suggestion is to research the phones, USE the 30 day test run, and return it if you don't like it. You don't have to give us a reason..
Oh, I check this every now and again so if you have questions about how we (AT&T) do things just ask.
Good luck, all.

201

Codrut Nistor, on September 20, 2008

Thank you very much, I am sure those in need appreciate your help a lot, just as we appreciate your effort to spare some time and drop by once again. Great job, dan, you're the man! ;)

202

dan the man, on September 20, 2008

For Renji-
If you still live in NY then good news for you: ATT is aggressively chasing the market since it's a mecca for international commerce. They want all tourists and international business travelers to know that ATT is a good network, so towers are being built in abundance. I imagine most other cell phone carriers are using similar logic, but I can't speak for them so...
If your contract is up, let me know what kinds of things you use your phone for and what you like/dislike and I'll make a recommendation. I know phones pretty well and I can probably get you a good fit. Even if you have to switch networks. Just don't tell anybody I said that.. :) (As if it's not posted for all to see anyway)

203

dan the man, on September 20, 2008

Oh, this just in: The Blackberry Bold on ATT is now NOT going to have touchscreen capability like originally projected. Speculate all you want, but it begs the question of just how tight apple's grip on AT&T's balls really is. With rumors about the lack of competitive phones that we carry to offset the iphone's financial clutch on our scrotes, I imagine it'll be a while before we carry anything that will give the people a reason not to buy the iphone.

204

jimmy defrancesco, on September 21, 2008

hey guys jus wondering if anybody having any problems with the iphone 3g camera cuz i am. i will click on the app icon and it jus shows the lens closed and thne it goes back to the main screen so i would be happy if someone had any info for me TY

205

Leo, on September 22, 2008

After upgrading to v2.1 on I-tunes, I've noticed no significant change in the phone's browsing ability ... it still cant lock on to a 3g signal and always reverts to gprs even in a strong edge or 3g area.

What really pisses me off is that the phone cant forward text messages, WTF?!

For those who asked about transferring files via explorer, there's a an app called air-sharing that lets you do this... its free at the app store. With your phones wifi on, the computer recognizes it as a network place, and you can transfer files just as you would over your network.

Mizz x, you cant get a spare battery for the phone coz the only way to access the internal battery is to break your phone with a hammer. You can greatly cut down on your battery drain though by turning off the push-email setting and just check it manually which is a little inconvenient. For me, this resulted in a total usage time of 5hrs (surfing, texting, games, and calls) and 23hrs standby time before the 20%battery warning flashed.... compared to usage time of 4 hours and standby time of 14 hours with push email on.

The one who commented about this phone being a toy is absolutely right.. its a great toy and i enjoy playing with it so im keeping it... but as a phone it sucks bigtime! Better carry a spare phone :)

206

Codrut Nistor, on September 22, 2008

Leo, what you say doesn't look good at all. Maybe your phone has some hardware problems, after all. Did you try returning it for replacement?

Great tip with the Air-Sharing app!;)

Lol, if you consider the iPhone a toy, better get the iPod Touch and a cheap mobile! :D

207

Leo, on September 22, 2008

Codrut, if you're referring to the inability to lock on to a 3-g signal, i suppose it could be a hardware problem, but apart from the extremely slow internet connection speeds over the network, the phone works fine in all aspects... I never experienced dropped calls and the voice quality is extremely good. I suppose the short battery life is a common problem as i've read many similar complaints on the net, and turning off the push-email seems so far the easiest fix.

Regarding the Iphone being a toy.. its the most accurate description I can think of since I cant seem to stop playing with it haha :)

208

Leo, on September 23, 2008

Bad news... air sharing is no longer free... just checked on i-tunes its now 6.99...good thing i got it early on. I guess its best to download as many free apps as you can while their still free :)

209

Codrut Nistor, on September 23, 2008

Heh, that's too bad. Now, here's the interesting question - if you got it for free, and now it costs money, is it legal to share it with your friends, or not? :)

210

Leo, on September 23, 2008

Hahahaha! Nice one :D Im not sure if you can even copy it, knowing apple there's gotta be some kind of copyright protection, Heck, I dont even know where its stored on the hard drive, It only shows up in the itunes window...

211

hey everyone i looking to purchase my iphone 3g friday and i just have one question. are we able to put a ringtone as our test messaging sound? or do we have to use the standard?

212

Norris Freedman, on September 23, 2008

I have had my iPhone since 1st week of August and I must be the lucky one, I never had any issurs with the exception of spotty phone service. The 2.1 update fixed it and now it is working as perfectly as Apple must have planned it.
I would like to have a flash player (it will come in time) and I would like to have a video function on the camera. It would be nice to be able to edit documwents and have mobile office, im sure it will be here soon. It is like having a great laptop in the palm of your hjand and it has a greqt big hi resolution screen.

2 thumbs up from me

226

dan the man, on September 27, 2008

Actually, the iphone can play different sounds for texts, emails, etc... but it's not supposed to. That being said, I take no responsibility if your phone has problems, but try this...
Find the sound file that is already associated with the text, then rename whatever sound YOU want to use as that file name.
For example:
The iphone plays "new-mail.caf" for your mail sound, right? So rename your "lollipop.mp3" file or whatever as "new-mail.caf" and your iphone will see it.
Again, this isn't something apple wants you to do so... I hold no responsibility.

227

dan the man, on September 27, 2008

Or even easier, just name your mp3 or wav files .caf and the iphone should recognize 'em with a bell and allow you to use for messaging.

Joef, you have to jailbreak your iphone and install an app called bitesms to be able to forward messages. I'll tell you a secret: READ the document before complaining. It does really help when you do because from what I read in this forum (from July 'til now) most of them just forgot or chose not to read it before spewing out all their nonsense - it's time to take a bit of personal responsibility here folks. .."its like the only phone that can connect to a ton of wifi’s..."
Really? I have posted comments here on many occasions saying that the iPhone 3G is a junk because I am in the mobile phone trading business. I have named more than a dozen models from various manufacturers that can outperform the iPhone feature per feature. In this fora, I have even discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the parts used by Apple in the iPhone 3G and in those models made by the other manufacturers. I have even discussed the problems of my friends who write the apps for the iPhone 3G.
If you cannot see beyond the tip ofyour noses and would not compare the iPhone with the other mobile phones, then naturally, you would swoon about this lemon.
C'mon, look beyond your boxes.
Let's call a fiasco a fiasco and hope that Steve Jobs takes this well so that he can do a better job with iPhone 4G.

JuLius, we can call the iPhone 3G "a fiasco" when looking at the expectations set by its predecessor, and how it ended up to perform, especially in terms of user satisfaction, but we all know the iPhone 3G sells like crazy, and that's what really matters for Apple.

As an example from "the other camp," look at Microsoft Windows Vista - it's a complete piece of crap, but they have sold (or simply pushed into the users' computers without asking...) enough licenses to cover the development costs, and make a profit, that despite the pretty high piracy rate in some areas of the world.

This is not about being the best product in your category, it's about being manufactured, advertised like hell, and selling above expectations. Customer satisfaction? Well, that's what firmware updates MAY take care of, in time...

I ve got my i phone 3G before 1 month and the only problem that i have is that it doesn't show names when i have an incoming call or a text message and its sooo irritating. Does anyone know how can i fix it?

I am thinking of buying a iPhone 3G. Can someone tell me their opinion that has one? I have a old Nokia and need a new phone. I want good and bad so give it to me straight.

251

Codrut Nistor, on October 15, 2008

Did you try to read all the above? If you have an old Nokia, and you want a new phone with a similar battery life above anything else, then get a new Nokia - and not one of those high-end models! ;)

To answer regarding the good and bad of the iPhone would be overkill now, so grab a beer, relax, and read those 200 comments above...

252

B, on October 15, 2008

Everyone is confusing me, people are saying that the 3g rocks, and people are saying that it sucks. I have the choice of getting either an iphone 3g for my birthday or a blackberry pearl, and I'm stuck between the two, after what I have read. At first I was convinced with the iphone then read the comments about it, went back to the blackberry, then back to the iphone, and now im stuck. Any suggestions?

253

SteelersFan, on October 15, 2008

thank you for no help Codrut Nistor (read 200 comments, I have a life you know).
So I read like 20 comments and like 10 said the 3G is amazing and 10 said it is worse than my old Nokia. So I guess I am going to try something else because this place has yet to give me a solid reason to buy or not buy the 3G or tell me good or bad stuff that I and the rest of the U.S.A. know.

254

B, on October 15, 2008

I read alot of other reviews, and some said it was bad, some said it was good.

255

SteelersFan, on October 15, 2008

I KNOW SOME SAID IT WAS BAD AND GOOD!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

256

SteelersFan, on October 15, 2008

Ok so I just read like 150 comments (worst hour of my life!) And I finally realize what is up with all the negative comments. Most of them are not real problems, they are just a couple people on a computer whining. PEOPLE IF U R GOING TO JUST WHINE TAKE THE STUPID THING TO YOUR APPLE, ATT, OR MAYBE EVEN BEST BUY STORES AND GO TO MY PHONE, A HUNK OF CRAP FROM THE MID 1990's THAT CALLS AND TEXTS.

257

Codrut Nistor, on October 16, 2008

SteelersFan, it happens this way with most products, but what you should do is read the user feedback, and then think if you could live with those problems, while enjoying the strong points more, to have a positive opinion as an outcome. Most of my gadgets are not perfect, but I bought them knowing that I'll enjoy them because the negative parts are not overcoming the strong points, that's it.

My iPhone 3G from HELL on YouTube... I love this phone but I hate AT&T.

My first Apple product was a $10,000 LISA computer back in 1983, so "YES," I'd say I'm a "branded" fanatic.

Roy in Texas, on October 17, 2008

I hope people don't think I'm one of those (Windows-type-people) who like to bash Apple. I actually have a 1gHz Dual PowerMac Quicksilver in my travel trailer with a firewire running to the outside so I can park (for HOURS) and do timelapse videos... Also have a 12 inch Powerbook and a new Intel Duo sitting here on the desk... But, I'M ON A MISSION FROM GOD in regard to the iPhone 3G mess. Mainly, I'm stuck with a $150 a month cellular phone bill form AT&T for two iPhones that effectively don't work. I had to pull the SIMM card from my iPhone and install into my old Cingular 8125 in order to have cell phone service again. My wife had to go back to her old TracFone (seen in my YouTube videos) and now we have these really cool iPhones sitting here as door stoppers.

AT&T says it's Apple's problem... Apple basically is saying it is AT&Ts problem and as a result, thousands of people are in the middle.

I'm not a real techno guy (but I did manage to build my own airplane, installing all the avionics, transponder, and wire up electronic ignition) but this Apple iPhone thing is beyond me! (Get on YouTube and see the first flight I took in that airplane... type in TuuTuuTango, my alter-ego moniker and look for my video, FIRST FLIGHT EXPERIMENTAL... Geeze, what a thrill that was.

Sorry to be on a soapbox about this iPhone thing, but I expect better customer service from these two GIANTS and I hate seeing little guys (consumers) getting the shaft, (or in this case, a ROTTEN APPLE.)

Oh, forgot to add... my first Apple was a LISA. I suspect some here on this posting weren't even born yet, when I bought my LISA in 1983. Yep, I'm just an old gut on a farm. (See "Homelessdogs" on YouTube also and help me find a home for 7 dogs... my fiddo foodbill is killing me...)

So for thwe past couple of months iv been considering buying 3G but dont have any hands-on reserch on it. Pretty much for some people it works great or not at all. I know people are going to have problems with it but im just looking for an overall idea of if I should get it. Is it easy to set up? sync? does it work well with vista? does it have AIM and does it work well any SMS problems? or any other basic things i should before i buy it.

266

RoyFromTexas, on October 17, 2008

Hey Josh:

Don't get me wrong, the iPhone 3G is INCREDIBLE and there are people who are having NO problems with theirs. The APPs are unbelievable and downloading anything I need is easy. Mine works great on WiFi (my Cingular 8125 is a PAIN on WiFi...)

My wife returned home today from AT&T, where she was given a special phone number to Apple for sending back defective phones. She was told it only takes a few days to get a new one back (we'll see).

My original frustration was the tiny booklet that comes with the iPhone has NO CONTACT INFO for Apple and I was dreading having to go through their main phone messaging line to get a fix.

My advice, DO NOT BUY YOUR 3G THROUGH AT&T. If you can, buy it from an Apple store (we don have one here) and should you have problems, Apple can/should be able to rectify it Muy Pronto... AT&T on the other hand won't.

As far as "ease-of-use", no manual is needed (at least for me) and I'm an old guy...

How does it work in UAE?

271

JuLius Devereaux, on October 19, 2008

I do not find the iPhone 3G any good at all.
I have several important needs :
1. money transfer to and from banks,
2. payment to my suppliers ;
3. payment to shops and stores in shopping malls ;
4. payment of bills ;
5. payment at the Metro-rail ;
6. get the location of my wife, son. or daughter
on the map without disturbing them ;
7. show my products to clients ;
8. edit, re-edit my SMS and e-mail
before sending ;
9. synch music with my car stereo via bluetooth ;
all of which my Samsung, my Sony-Ericsson
and my Nokia can all do
but which my expensive iPhone 3G
can only wish it could.

After reading
AmitBhawani.com.blog
and saw more glaring drawbacks,

AmitBhawani.com Blog -
What Apple iPhone Does not Offer & Nokia Offers
Posted: 18 Oct 2008 10:00 AM CDT
Apple iphone have been a real sucess all around the world but in India seems that the huge price of around 700USD[31000INR] has created big problems for both the telecom providers Airtel & Vodafone. These handsets are not being sold easily not only because of the price but also because you cannot change the SIM card, in short because they cannot be unlocked.
On the other hand Nokia is continiously launching new handsets like Nokia N96 in the same price range but with very high number of features when compared to Apple iphone, because its a combination of N81 & N95
Here are some of the features you will miss if you own a Apple iPhone and these are also some reasons why you should avoid buying a Apple iPhone.
No Video Recording : You cannot Record any videos using this costly handset because there is no Video Recording Option which is available in most nokia mobile phones like Nokia N85, Nokia N79, Nokia 5320 xPressMusic, Nokia 5220 xPressMusic, Nokia 5000, Nokia 3600, Nokia 6600 Slide, Nokia N96 and many more nokia handsets. Next time you take out your handset to record a video make sure you dont own a iphone because on the special moment you cannot record the event unlike other Apple rival’s models. Though the iPhone comes with a inbuilt 2Mp camera which is just good for taking digital photos and again its hard to download them to a local pc.
No SMS Forwarding : Its festive time and you want to forward a SMS to all your friends group/contacts and you cannot find find a option to forward a SMS you recieved from someone else. Dont get frustated , buy a nokia or Sony ericsson handset because there are 25 Things you can do with your Cell Phone unlike Apple iPhone which does not support many of these.
No MMS Sending : You cannot send those naughty MMS videos to your friends when you own a Apple iPhone because its not supported along with voice-recognition facility for making voice dialing. Didnt we just say iphone does suck and there is no point in paying 31000Rs for a brick which is better than a stone for just one feature which is the touch screen.

No Cut, Copy & Paste : The Apple iPhones do not offer you to delete any part of your written text line by line, nor copy paste or cut and makes it hard for you to do any function related to writing. Did we hear around a 1,00,000 users have downloaded the wordpress for iphone application which helps then in blogging directly from their apple iphones, but can you even guess how hard would it be to blog from this tiny handset with a touchscreen and no Cut, Copy & Paste feature. Most mobile phones like Nokia E52 offers better options than this iPhone. Another important point is that it lacks support for multi-select.

Non-Easy Battery Replacement : Remember the last time you changed your nokia mobile phone battery within 30 seconds? Many people who are on a travelling always carry an extra battery for their handsets which can come in use because they cost quite less amount generally 5-10$ and can help a lot when there is no power source. But if you are a owner of a Apple iPhone you will need 3 business day’s time and a Apple Technician at a Apple Outlet because you cannot yourself change the battery whenever you need and this job can be done by professionals only. Well, this is a no-no option for Smart people with heavy battery usage and iam sure no one would opt for a apple iphone when they know about this.

No Wifi Support : Apple iphones dont support for Wifi in your local area which means that you cannot use the wireless modem in your area and whenever you want to use the internet using these Apple iphones you need to shell out internet access charges. Most 3G handsets available in the market support for this feature unlike Apple iPhones which is the reason you should again avoid buying them.
No Bluetooth File Sharing : In any nokia handset you just enable/activate the bluetooth feature and start sharing files from your handset. Apple iPhone cannot sync with any other Bluetoth devices like in-car stereo device and you cannot share any Mp3, Images or video files with anyone.

There are many other things like no iPhone ringtones customizations but you can use external tools like iPhone Ringtone Maker & iPhone Ringtone Converter. No Flash support which means you cannot open files based on flash.
Will you still buy the Costly Apple iPhone?

Roy in Texas, on October 19, 2008

I read the comments by JuLuis and I (being VERY CRITICAL of the iPhone) must add...

My iPhone works great in WiFi situations, here at home and in city locations having free internet.

My battery runs for a couple of days (My wife's iPhone won't last more than 4 hours)

The APPS available for the iPhone are AMAZING.

iTunes is a plus for me.

Being a pilot, the GPS feature is great to have.

I'm thinking, someone in China (I guess these were made in China) didn't have any Quality Control when these phones were coming out the factory. I suspect my iPhone has a defective antenna (probably the reason I can't get any bars from my cell phone tower about 1.5 miles from my house, but every cell phone that has been here from guests, relatives, friends and passersby WORKS and are "MAXED-OUT" with bars...

As for me, I don't need speed-dial. I don't need cut and paste for e-mail, but these indeed are features that many customers need.

Name one other cell phone that has GPS, can hold thousands of songs, has APPS that are nearly unbelieveable... And I agree, NOT BEING ABLE TO REPLACE OR CHANGE THE BATTERY BY THE OWNER IS A MAJOR BLUNDER ON THE PART OF APPLE.

276

SteelersFan, on October 19, 2008

Roy,
Like you I am one of those people that does not need cut & paste, speed-dial, video, etc. Also, I am a big iPod touch user so the apps and 8-16 gig with an iPod feature is great for me. My big thing is the internet and e-mail. I have not found ONE other cell phone that has these two features as great as the iPhone 3G. So thanks a bunch and all of you guys have been a big help. I'll come back to posting once I get my iPhone 3G. (or don't)

277

Codrut Nistor, on October 20, 2008

If you are using the Internet, SteelersFan, you have to use cut & paste. I am not crazy about speed dial or video, either, but I think cut & paste and a serious keyboard are a must for any device having the capabilities built into the iPhone.

Roy in Texas - think about any capable smartphone with microSD slot! :)

278

SteelersFan, on October 20, 2008

ok, cut & paste may be a big thing but the touch screen keyboard is not a big deal. if you don't have big fingers you have to press backspace every once in a while and if you do have big fingers buy a pen. No Big Deal.

279

SteelersFan, on October 20, 2008

P.S.
I guess i was lying about not posting until my final iPhone 3G decision was made. sorry. :-)

If by any chance one of ya'll have the first 'iphone' and want to sell it i'll b more than happy to buy from you i lost my and i dont like the new one so please let me know. ahh plz it most be working properly and with out no damages on it me e-mail is karive2001@hotmail.com oh and please dont try to get a fortune for it, remember that the new one cost just 199.

281

dan the man, on October 25, 2008

Actually the new one is closer to the area of $700. It's 199 or 299 with a 2 year commitment, at&t eats the rest...
If you have big fingers you can't just buy a pen - the iphone's touch interface is thermal, not pressure sensitive, so everyday items like pens won't work. It recognizes heat.
I like the iphone, i bought the tilt because i like windows mobile 6 installed and all the stuff mentioned above - cut n paste, pressure touch, actual keypad along with touchscreen keypad, longer battery life, and easier to deal with. When I say "easier to deal with" I mean with regards to everybody's complaints about at&t vs apple with fixes and support and troubleshooting.
Apple users don't fret, I'm gonna buy an iphone also, just waiting until they update the firmware and fix some of these issues they haven't addressed yet.

282

Jen, on October 26, 2008

I bought my 8 gig in April, 2008 and kept it in mint condition. I love this phone for the ease of use, and what it can do when it works....but that's WHEN it works. For the most part, it did work fine initially, but as time went on, infrequent minor issues became more frequent - especially when Apple updated the software for me in the store. Finally Apple replaced it this week with a refurbished (aka "used") phone this week, but already the camera is not working, so they were going to replace it again today, but with another refurbished/used phone. That is the only option they offered. I'm disgusted with the quality of this expensive phone and Apple's lack of customer concern and service. Gee, the employees at the stores are allowed to dress as if they've just rolled out of bed while some of their customers are dressed more professionally. I've been happy with AT&T for years, and they have offered to let me change to a complimentary phone of my choice - I'm thinking Blackberry...

I got the iPhone 3G a few weeks back, there are a lot things that are way ahead of other, but there are some issues, for one, the Sync/iTunes, software a bit rough on the edges, email exchange is fine, looks good, easy to to use. outdated camera, low battery life. my concern is that Apple is trying to do what microsoft has been doing for a while.. Controlling the market... oh I almost forgot to mention the Bluetooth, that does not work either, WHY NOT?
reception is fine. I got phone from USSR and using it in Dubai. Guess what? you can't buy the iPhone in the UAE. Well done Apple! they just want to control the market and their revenues from the carriers. To hell with the users, they think. Anyway this is the first and last time I buy an Apple product. Roy in Texas, on October 27, 2008

Some good news...

My wife got a replacement iPhone last week and this one has a vastly superior battery life. Her first iPhone (purchased new on 10-10-08) would run down to nearly dead in 4 hours on stand-by. Her replacement iPhone looks to be a "refurbished" iPhone, but the battery performance is much better.

My iPhone (which would easily run two days on stand-by) had great difficulty in accessing a cell phone tower about 1.5 miles from our house. I received from Apple, an empty box in which to send back my iPhone. I don't know why they didn't send me a "refurb" like my wife and I guess my iPhone will be gone for two weeks. It was sent back today by FedEx, and I plan on making a new video for YouTube as soon as I get it back.

Meanwhile, check my latest video on YouTube showing my iPhone not beiing able to access our cell phone tower from 200 feet away. My YouTube moniker is ROYINTEXAS. Just look for the video of my iPhone on the dash of my pick-up as I drive from my farm, up the road about a mile away directly to the cell phone tower. One of my videos is called "iPhone 3G form Hell," andother is called "AT&T iPhone, NO BARS IN TEXAS."

I installed the SIM card BACK into my old Cingular 8125, and BOOM, it had 5 bars and holds the tower (about 1.5 miles from my house) which my iPhone had problems doing from 200 feet away from the tower.

I hope my "refurb" works because this could be a really, REALLY outstanding piece of technology...

I bought the iPhone 3G on Saturday, went home.. played with it, found it to be AMAAAAAZING, then two days later is turned off on its own and wouldn't turn back on! I'm furious.

I'm sending my boyfriend to AT&T today to exchange it for another one. I'll give it another try. Hopefully, I'll have no regrets.

Other than that one malfunction, everything works smooothly. Better than any other phone I've had and I'm a phone fanatic!

Btw, does anyone know if you HAVE to purchase the iTunes? Or does syncing music downloaded from Limewire okay? E-mail me.

293

Roy in Texas, on October 28, 2008

ATTN MOMMA NAE:

#1. AT&T will NOT exchange the iPhone. You will have to call Apple on a special phone number and arrange to send the iPhone back to Apple for either a repair or a refurbished (used) iPhone.
#2. You don't "purchase" iTunes, it is free. iTunes is how you update and sync your iPhone and/or purchase APPS (applications) and or music.
#3. Avoid posting your private e-mail address on this or any other list because it can be harvested by con-artists and used for bogus scams.

I got the 3G thinking it is a better phone from the last iPhone. I was mistaken!!! this phone sucks bad. Even with the 2.1 update, I still get the same dropped calls and worst of all, when I synced my phone, it lost some pictures and just left blank thumbnails.

After that sync problem, a couple of weeks later, all of my contact list is emptied with no apparent reason, I did not even sync it!! Now I am afraid to use this useless piece if crap. I am planing to sell this on eBay and most likely get a Google phone.

296

Saleem, on October 29, 2008

Hi again, the more I use the iPhone 3G phone the more I dislike it. It looks good, but looks can be deceptive. Apple has a long way to go before it can compete with the others players. If Apple wants to ruin its reputation the be my guest, I think the damage is already done, in my humble opinion, anyway please go ahead and continue to sell half baked software running on the 3G.

There are some really excellent features, but they need to look at what functions and features their competitors are including or selling with their phones. Wake up apple before people who have bought the 3G, start dumping it in the bin or eBay.

Battery life sucks, Sync software sucks, contact sync sucks, Bluetooth sucks, camera sucks, no editing/paste-ting facility, that sucks, not able to work word/excel/powerpoint, now that really sucks, no word processing feature – take sucks big time, applications crash regularly – sucks, no utilities or file management capability – that sucks. iTunes back/restore very slow – sucks, removes installed apps, no option given – that sucks. How many sucks does apple want for this piece of crap? Someone should award Apple with the golden award in sucking!!!

Okay, now I feel better. Those interested in buying this piece of $%&%ing phone should think again.

Saleem, Saleem... (sigh) Saleem (:
Such hostility... what would your mother think?

OK, I get your point. You must have a really faulty iPhone... Have you seen my videos on YouTube?

My wife had a problem with her original iPhone, the battery ran dead in 4 hours (with all the juice-draining features turned OFF). She called Apple, and because she had the extended warranty, Apple sent her a refurb iPhone FedEx the next day. We still have some testing to do with the replacement, so at this juncture, I can not say how durable this new iPhone will be in regard to battery life.

I didn't purchase the extended warranty, but Apple did send me by next day air (FedEx) a box to send my iPhone in, back to Apple. 2 days later. I will be getting a replacement iPhone (like later this afternoon.) I'll post a new video on YouTube about our experiences with the replacement iPhones, but for now I can report, Apple gets an A+ for their doing this as speedy as possible.

Also, neither my wife or I had problems with syncs, bluetooth, WiFi, downloads etc. My original iPhone must have had a funky antenna and had difficulty finding a tower... You should see my video of me driving from my farm to within 200 feet of our cell phone tower, and my iPhone reading "NO SERVICE." Very weird, and VERY disappointing... But I'll hold judgement until later in the week as to how our new iPhones behave.

Good luck Saleem, and maybe have a nice cup of mint tea for now... It'll get better, and I can't understand your frustration... just don't let it get the best of you.

Thanks for the support...:) I had my mint tea, two actually, so I feel a lot better, I wish I can say the same for the iPhone 3G (referred here as the 3G).

Okay, here's the story behind my runt, I initially bought the Nokia E71, now this in my opinion is a very nice piece, and then two weeks later, for some insane reason, I bought the iPhone 3G. Note that I've never purchased Apple equipment/technology before, had heard and read lots of good things, but never actually owned anything from them. Anyway, having purchased the 3G I was initially really excited, the Nokia E71 was switched off and returned to the original box, while I entertained myself with the 3G, had lots of pleasure until things started going wrong.

I use my cell phones for both work and pleasure, but when I really started using the 3G, I realise that it’s really not for work, pleasure only. Many of the features that I would normally consider to be standard features for work are missing, so apple has its work cut out, if it wants the 3G to be seriously considered as an enterprise tool.
Just today I wasted the best part of about two hours of my life trying to get my contacts recovered, the "sync" removed all my contacts from the 3G iphone, when I really did not want it to, normally there should be an option. Anyway I had to import my contacts from excel and upload them into my outlook, which then sync'd with the 3G. It’s fine now, but can you imagine how I'd feel if I had not saved my contacts on Excel. I can't even bear to think about it.

I have now decided to return to my Nokia E71 and dump the 3G real fast or keep it for pleasure. I think I'll go and have another mint tea.

Seriously anyone thinking of buying the iPhone 3G for work and pleasure is in for a rude awakening. :)

Saleem:

Hey, I just got my iPhone back form Apple (the FedEx guy came.) BOOM-SHAKALA.. I now get 5 rock-solid bars.

I had to call Apple when re-installing my stuff, and the gal from Apple walked me through the sync/update process. So far so good.

I can understand your issues however. Yes, for your needs, there are some things missing. Me, I retired on my 50th birthday, don't need the stuff a working man (or woman needs) BUT, I am blown away at the stuff on this phone that works great for me. As a private pilot, I took to the GPS stuff like a duck to water... I now buy and sell stocks and the ability to track my investments is really cool.

Being new to Apple, yes, you'll go from being super mad at them to having your socks knocked off, believe me! I bought my first Apple product in 1983, a $9,000 Apple LISA computer... Been with Apple ever since. Sometimes I cuss Apple like an 19 year old sailor, next day I am a preacher praising them...

That being said, I'd like to ask you to call Apple and get a warranty replacement. They were very good to work with. Our phones were purchase new on Oct. 10 and now it seems both our issues have been resolved in a matter of a few days.

Are you using a Mac or a PC to do your syncs? I have 4 Macs and 4 PCs... The syncs work like magic on the Mac I am using... I'm just wondering if there are some funky things going on with your iPhone if you are connecting to a PC.

Good luck... glad you had your mint tea... works for me every-time :)

I forgot to add.... the toll-free number for Apple (their special number for iPhone support) is 1-800-694-7466.

303

Saleem, on October 29, 2008

Roy:

Thanks, I really appreciate your suggestions.

I'm using IBM Thinkpad with Windows XP professional. I think the real problem for me now is that the iPhone is not really an enterprise tool, i.e. does not have the productivity tools that one expects to have to do ones job at work or while mobile.

By the way, I'm in the UAE, and Apple has not signed up with any carrier here, the telecoms regulator does not/will not allow Apply to have an exclusivity arrangement with any one carrier. Nevertheless, thanks for the contact number, I'll try them out, much appreciated.

304

Codrut Nistor, on October 29, 2008

Saleem, you could try give you iPhone some tea, maybe it will refresh that thing too! :)

Malagant, the Google phone may be the way of the future, if it proves to work properly. If I had to choose between the iPhone and some Google-phone, I would surely go for the last one, as long as it provides a full keyboard, as such phones should ALWAYS do.

305

Saleem, on October 29, 2008

Codrut Nistor:

I think my iPhone 3G is going need something a little stronger, sorry, much stronger. But I'll probably refresh it with a hammer if i loose any contacts. :)

RoyFromTexas, on October 29, 2008

Saleem:

UAE... and you bought your iPhone in Russia? I used to live there (as an American journalist) in 1989. I wonder if the iPhones sent to European countries were the ones that allegedly had the problematic chips some critics (on-line journalists) have been talking about.

I can see that NO WAY you can simply get a warranty fix being where you are. Frustrating... My wife uses an IBM ThinkPad at work. I think she has attached the iPhone to it in order to charge the iPhone, but I am doing all her updates/syncs on my Intel based Mac... Also, Apple told me today that it is critical you do your syncs and update with iTunes 08, version 2 (I think it was 2, but just use what ever is the latest iTunes and see if that doesn't help?

When will you be back stateside (or do you come here?) You might have to get a warranty switch next time you are somewhere like London (I was at their Apple store last Christmas) or I guess Apple has a store somewhere where you will be?

Good luck.

308

Saleem, on October 30, 2008

Roy:

Well it’s a long story, so I’ll keep it simple, I live in London, work in Dubai and a colleague of mine was visiting his home country, Russia. Anyway I don’t know if he likes me or not, probably not, for suggesting that he could pick up an iPhone 3G there, and that’s how I got hold of mine.

I charged my iPhone twice today, and when I really needed it to be working, it decided to die on me, and so it looks like I’m going to leave it switched off for a while, permanently perhaps. I’m not sure if I should cremate it, and ship the ashes to Apple, or bury it in my backyard :(

Any other suggestions from my fellow iPhone 3G "lovers"?

309

Roberta, on October 30, 2008

I have a Treo and it works perfectly fine. I can access the web, text, email, call, etc. The battery works perfectly fine, too. I charge it (typically) at night. I can touch the screen, as well. Further, there is a full-size keyboard so I can type...and I don't get fingerprints on the screen b/c of this amenity.

This is the fourth cell phone I've had since the age of 19 (6 years ago) and I've had this one the longest and have had no problems at all. The battery still works (after two years) and has never drained unexpectedly.

Granted, once in a very slim while will the screen freeze, but I just turn it off and on again and it works fine. The 2GB memory card isn't full yet.

I REALLY WANTED TO BUY AN iPHONE; however, after reading these posts, my decision has been thwarted. Maybe I should wait a few years before buying one, or at least until all the problems are resolved.

I watch the demos on the iPhone website all the time and it seems so fascinating, everything runs so smoothly. But after seeing all these posts, I think that I might wait a while.

310

Codrut Nistor, on October 30, 2008

Saleem, if you have a microwave oven ready to be retired, you could try to cook the iPhone 3G. Maybe it will mature and get out flawless...or not! ;)

Roberta, the Treo is an awesome phone. Why change it if it still gets the job done?

311

For my friend Saleem...
go to this link... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLxq90xmYUs

or, tell me how much you want for your iPhone. Maybe I'll buy it from you. I have some rubles left from when I lived in Moscow.

To everyone else... I got my warranty/replacement iPhone in 3 days from Apple and it is working MUCH BETTER. I am totally blown away with this phone, but as Saleem has posted, it may not meet the needs of most business users. For me (I'm a pilot) IT IS OUTSTANDING.

312

Saleem, on October 31, 2008

Codrut Nistor,

Thanks for the suggestion, i'm not about to burn my new microwave down, I just got it, thank God its not made by Apple, otherwise I'd stick the iPhone in there and destroy/retire both of them ;)

Roy:

Thanks for offering to buy the iPhone 3G from me, but I'm a firm believer in not dumping #$%@ on my friends, the phone is useless to me, and so are the rubbles.

As I mentioned earlier, I'll give it to one of my offspring, but I love them, so I have mixed emotions about dumping it on them. They might love me for it or curse me; well they wouldn't really do that- just a figure of speech- especially when the battery does not last a day. They don't work, as yet -still students- so they could use it for pleasure.

The iPhone 3G has been off since yesterday, I didn’t bother to re-charge it, but I do miss the pleasure part of the phone. Never mind, the Nokia E71 is out, it immediately started to sync with my work email exchange. So I’m up and running again without too much delay, no thanks to iPhone 3G and Apple.

Have a good one!

How do you jailbreak the new 3g? I am looking to get the option to be able to forward text messages and possibly cut and paste them. Will this help with this? Are there any downfalls to jailbreaking the 3g? Thanks for the help.

321

Codrut Nistor, on November 08, 2008

Jailbreaking the iPhone won't give you copy paste capabilities or message forwarding, unfortunately. Since it's a software-only method, there's no downfall, as long as you restore the iPhone before going to the official service center when you run into problems, and you don't say anything about it...

322

Tommy BOY, on November 08, 2008

according to post 213 you can jailbreak it then install an app "bitesms" and then you will be able to forward messages. Is it even worth it to jailbreak the phone or is it more hassle to jailbreak then have to restore it before taking it in? What else will jailbreaking the 3g do for me?

323

Codrut Nistor, on November 10, 2008

Jailbreaking your iPhone 3G will allow you to use a bunch of third party apps that Apple won't allow into the App Store for various reasons, especially those that are replicating the functionality of one of their own apps, or something already built into the iPhone - even if these apps do it better...

Well i dont know what you guys are complaining about.......

I had my iphone 3G (16GB model) for a couple of weeks now i bought it the tuesday after it came out in Malta. I had absolutely no problems with it.

The battery works fine charges in less than one hour when it is stuck to the electric plug (awesome :) )
All the applications run smooth
I can study my tutorials while i am on the bus using it and also hear some music at the same time
I can use it to play PES2009 (as a controller) on my PC (with an application from app store)
I can surf the net with safari with no problems at all.
Never had any dropped calls
GPS works fine and i love it
Never ending contact list, with email addresses multiple numbers and contact pics
On screen QWERTY keyboard is cool
updated to v 2.2 with no problems at all (just plugged downloaded the update via itunes and it installed no problem.)
Awesome calculator when you forget yours
Very fast WiFi internet connection
Awesome to check my mail when i dont have time switching on my PC
Awesome to watch Youtube videos
My reception is always full
Calender is awesome
Accurate weather checks
Awesome to carry a huge number of songs, mp4 videos and pictures

Conclusion
iphone = very good mobile phone,
If you got any problems could be either an application error (even the best PCs freeze, or could be a headset fault, these things happen..... (fortunetly not to me :D )

PS. Cant wait for the application to edit Ms office documents (Quickoffice).
Also could control a PC using the VNC client application from app store

I think the problem isn't with the Iphone as much as it is with AT&T. On numerous occassions I've lost calls, signal connections while on the web, or have had static reception. Might I add that I've had this happen in brooklyn and queens N.Y(this isn't suppose to happen in New York). I did like the simplistic sych of the iphone. But what's the use of an expensive phone when the service sucks. I went to AT&T and they said it could be the sim card, or it could be the iphone( that I would then need to call apple).Well that's a bitch, I thought the product was suppose to work flawlessly out the box. I lost patience and canceled my service. How can I sell or return this now? Anyone have any ideas?

Geeko, on December 19, 2008

I am the IT manager for my company and I've had to deal with scores of people wanting to access their company email with the iPhone. I've talked to over a dozen people personally regarding the phone, and tested one as well. I'm not an Apple lover, but I have to say, I was impressed as hell.

We're a Blackberry shop, and with over 500 Blackberries in service, I've seen my fair share of issues with those devices too. Nothing is perfect.

The Blackberry doesn't have any Microsoft Office creation or editing capability. Heck, it can barely open an attachment, where as an iPhone will open pretty much anything you throw at it. Picture viewing is awesome. Web browsing is fast and easy.

Granted, I don't own one (probably won't until we complete the upgrade to Exchange 2007), but my users that have them absolutely love them. So much so, they are carrying their iPhone and their company provided Blackberry and only using the Blackberry for company email.

That speaks volumes when someone who has a phone provided for free is willing to dish out at least $70 a month for an iPhone.

I'm still waiting for someone to answer a question that a couple folks have already asked... is anyone else having the issue of the screen going BLACK either when you're on a call or just "wake" the phone from a sleep state? When it goes black, the screen NEVER comes back until you press the power button-- then, it may stay lit and it may not. Its happened maybe 5 times now. My iPhone is less than 2weeks old and this probelm began last week... I want to return it before my 30days if there is no remedy.

Please, Dan the Man-- have you encountered anyone with this issue and do you feel its time to "jump ship" and return this?

All comments welcome.

349

Joe Clark, on January 16, 2009

Yes my screen flashes to black and then back sometimes for no apparent reason. It often happens when I am on a call but sometimes for no reason I can determine. I do not know the cure but will take it to the Apple store and get a tech to explain it.

350

Joe Clark, on January 16, 2009

Screen goes to black when you are in phone mode and you are blocking the sensor at the top so that it conserves battery power. Sometimes mine does that when I am not blocking the sensor but that seems to be a time thing.

Black Screen -- Qdiva & others...happened to me this morning. Saw an IM and did not unlock the phone; I stuck in back in my pocket. I went to use it about an hour later and could not restart the phone. Tried holding the power key, no joy.

I connected the power supply cord to the phone and it came back to life.

Yes, the Black Screen is the newest issue. But it's one heck of a device.

353

Steve, on January 23, 2009

Funny how personal some people take other people's comments. In any event, I have had my iphone for just over a month and up until a week or so ago have had no problems. The only issue is that the iPod stops and starts after about 30 minutes or so. I do not use it often so no big deal but will go back to AT&T to see what they can do. Other than that everything is great. It synched up with my stereo bluetooth ('07 Rav4) with no problem whatsoever. My signal 95% of the time is great (Southern Maryland) and phone clarity is very good. I downloaded episodes of The Unit, 2 and a half Men, CSI (2 episodes) and the clairty was awesome. I watch 2 hours worth on a flight and hardly used any of the battery. All in all for what I use it for, it is better than what I expected.

354

Qdiva13, on January 24, 2009

Thanks Joe Clark for mentioning the sensor that's present at the top of the 3G! You helped to solve my "black-out" issue! Once I trimed back my case a tiny bit, the problem never reoccurred... and I tried real hard to recreate the issue just in case I wanted to still return the phone. Thankfully, all is well now so hats off to you!

If anyone still has the plastic cover still on their phone trying to preserve the screen, that will cause the "black-out" too... simply trim that plastic back away from the black area at the top of the phone... like Joe said, that's the sensor.

I'm a happy camper now with no issues on day 20!

355

Andy, on January 28, 2009

Day 30 with the iPhone 3g and I've only had one problem (not even worthy to consider it an issue). I set it down once and the screen flickered white then back to black. I assumed it was just some random firing on the LCD. I've never seen it since.

It's been great to work with. Alot of the people I work with are very bitter about it. It's an amazing phone. I'm assuming if you took the Apple logo off and branded it as just an AT&T phone, most of the bitter people at my office would love it. Eh well.

Every device has it's problems from a muzzle loader to a main frame computer. The iPhone only is problematic in that Apple designers never used a Palm. Since this is only software I trust the next generation will correct a lot of this. A main complaint is the screen going dark which is a design feature so that when you hold it to your ear to talk, you block the sensor at the top which turns the screen off to save power since you cannot see it anyway unless you have an eye beside your ear. Some inadvertently block this sensor with some type of cover.
A number of people complain of short battery life but keep the locator turned on all the time or have emails upload every 15 minutes. If the phone stays active all the time it must use the battery to do so.
I wish the iPhone would let me search my directory by first name or last name by simply entering a few letters of the name I am searching for.
I wish the iPhone would let me blue tooth a directory entry to/from my phone to/from someone else's phone.
I like my iPhone and think it is a great piece of equipment - not perfect yet.

I think the iPhone has been an innovation trend setter, but the innovation has flat lined somewhere, I would like apple to optimally utilize all the features so many phones today are trying to mimic. If apple cannot give its buyers a real value for its price many people will look towards other options with more complete features, I guess Apple should look at this page and take owner comments when thinking about the next gen of the iPhone.

How can the developers leave out Copy/Paste, Bluetooth File transfer, and using its space as a USB Mobile Data Storage unit. These features are available in many phones and I do not think it'll be rocket science to include them with the iPhone.

I have used the iPhone 3G, turned it back in and went back to my Nokia N73 Music Edition not because I hate the iPhone but its not practical enough for my usage.

Can someone help me and tell me if they are having this issue with their iphone 3g. I just got it today... set a passcode on it. It worked all day I downloaded my pics, music, apps, etc. Now I can't enter my passcode to unlock the screen, it's like it's not responding to anything, when I touch the keypad the numbers light up and I hear the clicking sound, but nothing shows up. I can slide to unlock when someone calls but I can't get pass the "enter passcode" screen. Has anyone else had this problem?

366

Joe Clark, on February 21, 2009

I read a lot of issues which seem primarily related to not knowing how to use the phone yet. I experience these issues myself. The solution is simple and straight forward. Go to the Apple store near you and you will find an expert. Usually the AT&T store has an expert on site.

Most of the posters on here are full of crap and exaggerating to high heaven. You are pissed off about one thing or another and want to make it all about the iPhone.. there were not tons of people in line to return it, so quit lying just to make your story sound more interesting and dire. You were pissed off so if a ray of sun shined the wrong way into your eye on your way to the AT&T store, you would say, "DAMN APPLE AND AT&T... BLINDING ME SO I CAN'T RETURN MY IPHONE." Just deal with the fact that the iPhone was too much phone for you and you have zero patience... every new device that comes out that has problems is usually not HARDWARE related, but software... with the new firmware upgrades the phone is rock solid for me (even jailbroken). Whine, whine, whine... spoiled little babies... get over it or go buy a Motorola Razr, because that seems to be all you can handle right now.

Joe Clark, on March 04, 2009

I have a problem with syncing my iphone with itunes. I loaded a book and it loaded into music. I highlighted all the sections and right clicked to move into the audio books section which worked fine. Now it is not cross loading onto my iphone which indicates it has plenty of storage remaining. I do have two books already on there but am not aware of any limit other than storage capacity. This is an operator problem not an equipment problem.

Hi @Casperboo

I got rid of my iPhone 3G phone (actually I got two) within one month of buying them to my kids, because its good for kids, and they love them, but not for serious users, this phone does not have some basic features that a smart phone should have.

So be a good little kid and go play with your phone! or what ever else you want to play with!

373

Florian, on March 05, 2009

Hey man, we are all kids, no matter what age we have. The life is short and we like to play from time to time.

If you decided o grow old so soon... your problem :)

Hold the two buttons down at the same time and it will turn the phone off. It should reset when it turns back on. See your instructions about how to turn your phone on and off.
Never forget that your Apple store is not far away. That store is full of people with the answers.

381

Joe Clark, on April 21, 2009

I like my 3G. When I first got it I had a learning curve to go through just as I had when I first got my Palm. With the 3G I made several trips to the Apple store with my 3G in one hand and my laptop HP in the other. The people at the store were always willing and able to solve my issues and therefore, teach me what I needed to learn. In my case it was operator error every time.

My iphone 3g is the best thing thats ever happened to me. I've had it for three months and its brilliant, I'm from australia and 3g reception is good. Reccomended

385

Joe Clark, on May 21, 2009

I have had my 3g since just after Christmas and am more in love with it every day. The learning curve caused me so early problems but now I am past that.
Someone told me that charging my phone with a car charger will ruin the battery because it is straight 12 volt charging a 9 volt battery. Is that correct?

386

Florian, on May 23, 2009

Diana, iphone 3G is a piece of junk because you are using nails and probably you don't know how to use it.

I have mine for about 2 month now and it's working great. I am happy with it :p

387

NVS_Strifer, on May 27, 2009

sounds like a whole lot of you just don't read the manual and go at it balls blazin with no real sense of what is really supposed to be done to get your iphone to work. Hundreds of little tricks, that are extremely easy to do if you just read how to do it, can be done to increase battery life, keep from os crashes and so on and so forth..

Just stop being the typical american and take some time to actually get to know what you're calling a piece of crap.

388

Duke xXx, on May 28, 2009

Yeah, the Iphone is a nice piece or equipment, however it has a lot of disadvantages, or missing features. I am exited about the OS 3.0 comming up this summer. The word is that this will fix most of it's errors and missing features.

I just got one error today. When i try to send a text message it says: "Error Sending Message" This only happens when i send message to one contact. I can receive and send txts from others with no problem. Somebody experiencing the same issue?

I am using the iphone 3g on T-mobile's network.

Cheers.

PS. I love my iphone no matter what.......If you want one, just go a get it. I paid 900 bucks for it, and no regret at all.

Pedro, on June 16, 2009

I am on my 5th iPhone 3G. Is anyone else having issues with the battery heating up to the point of not being able to touch it and also a battery that might last 4-5 calls which are approx 3-4 mins long before the battery go into the red and needing a recharge. I was told to do a hard start on the phone and this does not correct the problem but does seem to extend the battery a slight bit without the heat up. Now get this. AT&T claims there is nothing they can do about the issue but you are locked into a contract with them for the usage of the phone which the iPhone with it’s issues limits you on usage? I used to have T-Mobile with 1600 mins and 250 texts for less then this phone that I cant use more then 200-300 mins without issues. Now I’m not sure about a lemon clause but Apple seems to correct the problem with referbished phones. What happened to my New Phone or did I just pay for a lease on a referbed phone? I’d love to hear from others on this and if anyone has filed a lawsuit claiming the same issues please drop me a message.
Thanks
Unhappy iPhone 3G jipped customer

391

Duke xXx, on June 16, 2009

Nope, no problems at all. In fact a lot of people told me about the poor battery life, but mine is a piece of gold. It lasts 2 days with a lot of calls and texting as crazy. I could say about 3 hours of talking each day and a average of 100 text per day. It lasts two full days. No heating.

Try contacting Apple, and make them send you a BRAND NEW phone.

Good luck.....

392

Pedro, on June 16, 2009

Hey Duke,
Don't get me wrong I switched to the iPhone because of the features and I love the features and being able to connect to my Mac computer with my phone. I have contacted Apple and like I said I am on my 5th phone. I have taken my phone to the Apple store and they have replaced it 5 times. Each time with a referb. My new referb seems to work fine for about 2-3 weeks before issues start to show up. I have deleted almost every apps I downloaded because the tech says that the apps cause a problem. Now I got the phone because of being able to use the apps. They contradict themselves. Easy fix is here's another referb try this one. All I want is to be able to use the phone that I paid good money for without issues. Apple doesn't seem to care go figure 5 phones in 11 months and still no answers as to why it's happening or what is wrong.
But don't get me wrong I like the concept of the iPhone just not being a guiney pig while Apple sits back and gets rich not correcting the issues.

393

George, on June 20, 2009

I love almost everything about the new iPhone 3G S - except the video playback of my most loved videos that I have had on my iPhone since I bought the first one. i have many DivX Videos that I converted for the iPhone and they worked perfectly on my original iPhone. Apple has aborted the video playback in the iPod section. It is a disaster. This is just like APPLE - they hate the things customers love. I hope someone has a correction program to correct this bad mistake by Apple. Thanks

394

Sean, on June 23, 2009

Ok...I got the new 3G S iphone last Friday and it was working great....but I let the battery die to nothing tonight and now it will not restart properly. It simply displays a white screen when I turn it on. The touch screen still works sort of since I can hear the slider go across and activate the main menu screen BUT I simply see a big bright white screen. I see the same white screen when there is an incoming call.

Has anybody else had this problem? If it doesn't go away or there is no hard reset, I guess I have to return the phone....which would really suck since it took hours to setup with contacts and apps....

Since upgrading my iPhone 3G to the e.g. micropphone, etc. when I connect it to my computer, it no longer shows up on the left side of my iTunes (V.8.2.1).Not even if I open iTunes manually.
Was there a bug or something else I should have done when upgrading?

399

Duke xXx, on July 28, 2009

That really sucks PEDRO. They should do something to fix that. I know you like the concept of this amazing device. We all do!!!. Really bad that this crap is happening to some phones. Whats the matter with it?

Thank God i didnt have any issue. mmmm, now that i remember, there was this time when my IPhone got lock, and wouldn;t response. I tried pressing every button, but nothing. It was like that, with a black screen, for about half hour, and then i reset it self. Yesterday, when i was trying to make a phone call, the speaker went like: Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing and wouldn't stop doint that, the longest ring i have ever heard. I just hanged up and call back again, but nothing serious till now.

Spork, on August 03, 2009

I HATE THE iPHONE.
More like, iFraud.
I've been through 3 different phones with my company. Battery life issues, corrosion issues have plagued nearly all of the phones in my company. We taken MANY back to Apple as a result.
Why I hate the iPhone:
1. AT&T is abysmal quality and coverage.
2. iPhone form factor is idiotic. Hard to hold in your hand, contantly slipping, touches odd keys and pocket dials.
3. Corrosion. The wide charging area along the bottom encourages moisture of humidity damage.
4. Battery life. Burned thru 3 already.
5. No replaceable batteries -- what F'ing idiot designed that?
6. The form factor. I mentioned this already, but it is worth mentioning again. For people who talk 2500 minutes + per month and use it as a laptop, the device is painful to hold for long periods of time. Awkward as hell.
7. The price. Too expensive for what it is.
8. iPhone apps are idiotic. I don't want a gameboy, i want a good PHONE! How about making it easier to HEAR people? How about making a stronger speaker!? How about using VERIZON?!
9. Dropped Calls. See above.
10. Apple's holier than thou attitude. Smarmy, sanctimonious, "true believer" bull$hit. Make a good product and stand behind it you jerkovs.
11. The iPod on my phone. Give me a break. I could give a $hit about music on my phone. I DONT CARE about that nonsense. Make a BETTER PHONE!!!!!!!!!
12. iPhone apps are LAME! There isn't one that I've used frequently EXCEPT for the ones they kill like the GOOGLE APP.
13. The GPS mapping function is spotty and lame. A Garmin device is much better, more reliable investment.

404

Spork, on August 03, 2009

Also,

14. The processor is WAAAAY too slow switching between applications.

15. Taking photos is WAAAAY too slow.

16. The camera quality is crap

17. No cut and paste

18. No toggling between apps.

19. Freezes often when calls come in and an SMS comes in at the same time.

20. The damn audio off button is too easy to hit by accident. What Jerkov designed that?

21. BAttery heats up way way way too hot. I've been on 3 iphones so far and all my coworkers have experienced the same thing. This device is a piece of $hit.

@ PEDRO -
Let's hope that people sue Apple as often as they sued over the scratched cases for iPods.

Apple has become WORSE than Microsoft.
I hope someone

John, on August 12, 2009

All phones have problems, The Iphone is great, the 3GS is better than the 3G.
I could not afford any of the Iphone family, so have had Sony Erricsons, but I now have the Nokia 5800 and apart from a not as snazzy UI or capactive touch screen its as good as the iphone 3G and virtually on a par with the 3GS.
It does just about everything that people on here have wanted. Cut and Paste, videos and on device editing, multi tasking enabling me to use turn by turn nav while listening to music and tracking my route with sports tracker at the same time and then spark up the camera and take a geo-tagged photo while all the other programs are still running.

Music playing is great, on board speakers are powerful, it has TV out with cable. It has flash lite 3.1, youtube, BBC iplayer. it even has a torch (twin LED flash). There are now even a load of apps for it.
Nearly forgot, full bluetooth and MMS
The phone was free with O2 on a £25 a month contract with 600 anytime any network minutes, 1000 texts (4 texts = 1 MMS) and unlimited mobile internet, as usual though the unlimited is actually "fair use" limited.
I love it, but also loved my SE K750i, SE K810i and still love the W880i I won from SE and use as my work phone. I'm certain that if I had an Iphone I'd love that as well because I cut my devices a lot of slack and can put up with minor issues.

Richard, on August 16, 2009

The iPhone is great. The 3g is Awesome! Got the 3gs...it's a piece of S**t!

Battery life is half of what the 3g was. Can't hold a signal. Basically...I can't use this phone. It's worthless. I'm on my land line making calls because this thing drops 9 out of 10 calls. NEVER had this problem with the 3g or the Original. I've been on the phone with Apple, ATT, back to the store...tried a hundred different things...no luck. 3gs....s stands for SUCKS!

Ivan, on August 18, 2009

I bought Iphone 3GS from NZ a month ago. I enjoyed a lot when I just bought other than the fact its battery life, but I manage to use on-line tips to prolong the battery life by turning off Wifi, pushing e-mails etc. Until yesterday, I was very happy with the purchase even though I have to pay ridiculous extra compare to other countries.
However my Iphone dead on me last night, exactly after 30 days use.I sent back to the store and was told it's hardware fault and I will receive a replacement. While I was in the store, there were two others who had problems with their Iphone!
silence..........

No problems with phone until now, the phone seems to be fine full bars, 3g symbol in the corner. Will not recieve or make calls, also i get a red exclamation point in text box while trying to send a text.  I have to shut it down and reboot it to get it to work again. The next day same problem all over again. Any ideas on possible solution.

412

Richard2, on September 30, 2009

Having issues with my 3Gs everytime an update is uploaded.  I stop receiving calls and texts, can't make calls.  Have to do a full reboot to reset but it eventually does it again.  So, then have to do a system restore.  This works great until another update comes along and screws everything up again.

413

Frustrated 3G'er, on September 30, 2009

Eric, your fix is noted in Richard2's statement.  You need to do a restore from the iTunes screen.  But, don't restore your backup.  If you have apps/music/etc, just sync those back after your factory restore.  Major pain!

apple products are designed for landfill, on October 06, 2009

mac and iphone/ipod is good at new, but will be super horrible expensive to fix after warrenty ot applecare expired

apple has make a statement that they never fix iphone/ipod, no matter how much you pay them, they just swap you another one used by other friendly user

on another point of view, the iphone/ipod are only new when you bought it, if you have problem like failed to start, battery dead, explode, 3.5 headphone jack bad connect, when you bring it to apple to fix, they will give you another one used by other people or display model, and the one you sent will be send to singkapoo to mass fix, then these fixed one will be ready to swap for other poor owners.
