iPhone 2.1 Problems?!

posted in gadgets, by Codrut Nistor

On the 9th of September, as Steve Jobs announced the new goodies, the iPhone and iPod OS 2.1 were also shown to the world, only they didn't become available at the same time. The good news is that, finally, a few hours ago, iPhone 1st gen and iPhone 3G owners got the firmware 2.1 update available through iTunes 8. Since there is a long list of iPhone 3G problems, let's see what should be solved by this update, shall we?

I know you are anxious to find out more about what Apple claims to be fixed by the update, but first, you may want to take a look at the new iPod problems, too. Anyway, let's leave the problems aside now, and get to the fixes, so here's what the iPhone 2.1 firmware promises to do:

- Decrease in call set-up failures and dropped calls
- Significantly better battery life for most users
- Dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
- Improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
- Faster installation of 3rd party applications

- Fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes for users with lots of third party applications
- Improved performance in text messaging
- Faster loading and searching of contacts
- Improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
- Repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
- Option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
- Genius playlist creation

You know what's the funny part? According to some early user reports, 3G is now working great, battery life was dramatically increased, and the interface is having a better response time than ever before!

Since I don't know anything yet from one of my iPhone 3G friends, and I always enjoy information from close sources, I have to ask you what's your opinion about iPhone 2.1, if you tried it, of course. Feel free to drop a comment below, it's going to be highly appreciated!

iPhone 2.1 Jailbreak!!!, on September 15, 2008

[...] am safe and sound, nothing really bad happened, only that a few hours ago I found out about the new iPhone 2.1 firmware. So far, so good, but I found it absolutely incredible to know that the jailbroken version is also [...]

My reception and dropped calls are still a HUGE problem with the 3G phone. My 2G iPhone worked much better.

Could you mention your area, so we can get a better idea? Do you know others living in the same city with similar problems?

Fetch mail on interval from gmail is completely broken in 2.1. Testing my other POP accounts and it's looking like it's the iPhone 2.1 firmware that is broken.

Apple's QA is rocking! The purchase of the iPhone has completely turned me off from getting any Apple computers. iPhone has made Vista (before SP1) looking pretty awesome right now (Vista SP1 has not crashed on me and I do a lot of stuff on it)

Hmm...Vista hasn't crashed on me either, but we should see what happens when (and "if") they make a Vista for mobiles!

What I noticed is that I can't get a static IP address to stick for a Wi-Fi connection any more, which hoses my Wi-Fi. I can try to set up a DHCP server but I shouldn't have to.

Hmm...do you have any friends who have the same issue? It wouldn't be something new to see a patch taking away one problem, and adding a new one instead! :)

I only know of two other people with iPhones and I believe they have DHCP assign the IP address. Everything on my network at home is static IP, so I never set up a DHCP server. (I did turn on DHCP on my router - which is different from my WAP - and assigned a small range of addresses to it, but the iPhone doesn't pick up anything from that either. I'll need to twiddle my laptop settings and see if it can get a DHCP address or not.)

2.1 made scrolling through my contacts list seem much quicker at first but after a day or so it seems to have slowed down again but not quite as much.

Unfortunately, after applying the update I get many more dropped calls, inability to send text msgs at times, and safari still crashes too frequently. Battery life hasn't changed noticeably for me. My usage habits haven't changed.

And what is that little blue circle that occasionally replaces the 3G/Edge logo at the top-left corner there? Never saw that prior to installing update.

Hmmm...still app crashing problems?

It improved my reception and sped up everything! For 2 days.
Now ALL my 3rd party apps crash. I cannot use ANY of them.
Steve Jobs can rot in hell.

PS: I found a way to fix my problem without do a total restore.
Turned out to be quite simple really:Just delete a small app and reinstall it.

Great to hear that, lazysupper!

after installing 2.1 I am having problems sending and receiving messages. This is really frustrating! It shows that its been sent but many people are not getting them at all. What is the cause of this? and when will it be fixed?!?!
