iPhone 2.0.1 Problems

posted in gadgets, by Codrut Nistor

Firmware upgradeable devices can be a real pain in the...head, believe me! In the end, it's not what I think, because if you had at least 2 or 3 such devices, you surely had problems with one of them. Just hear me, now - I had a DVD writer that came with a defective firmware right out from the manufacturer, so it was working great as a DVD-ROM, but it wasn't capable of burning anything. After that one, I received a no name MP3 player that had terrible sound quality. Since it came with a "firmware updater" on a CD, although it had no official site, I updated the firmware. The result? Now it only says "Hello!" and then freezes. Great! When talking about computer hardware, I have a lot of firmware related stories, but now I'll get to the point - Apple iPhone and its 2.0.1 firmware update...

Not so long ago, we were talking about the iPhone 3G jailbreak, and now the iPhone Dev Team is back with some useful information for those who may want to run firmware hacks on the iPhone 3G. What kind of information? Well, we're talking about the now usual "don't upgrade if you want you hacked iPhone to remain hacked" advice. To be more specific...

...the now notorious iPhone Dev Team, creators of the PwnageTool, are claiming that the latest update for the iPhone 3G coming from Apple, apart from fixing bugs, also makes changes to the baseband code, and this could block any future attempts to unlock the device. While this is not sure yet, one thing is certain: the update undoes any previous jailbreaking performed with the help of iPhone Dev Team's PwnageTool.

While the above affects only those with a jailbroken iPhone 3G, here's one for everybody - if you have Airplane mode enable, and then you install the iPhone 2.0.1 update...you can end up with a non-functional device! According to latest reports, it is possible to get the "Information for activation cannot be obtained from the iPhone." message, but the good part is that you can disable the Airplane mode from the emergency screen, and then try again.

Even more, you may end up facing this error:"iTunes could not update the carrier settings on your iPhone. An unknown error occurred (OxE80000001)." If it happens, you should try clicking the "Restore" button, instead of "Update."

These being said, I hope you'll be able to solve all potential problems with this last update for the iPhone 3G, so...good luck!
