The bottom side is connected through a mechanical arm to an LCD screen. The third and fourth major revision of the iMac,the iMac G5 and the Intel iMac have all their main components stored immediately behind the LCD screen and it gives the device a slim and unified look. The display tilts only up and down on a metal base. The current iMac model has the same form as the previous one, it is thinner and it uses anodized aluminum and a gas panel on the entire front side of the device.
Directly under the Slot Loading Suer-Drvie, the newest model has a SDXC slot. The announcement of the iMac back in 1998 started discussions between Mac fans, commentators and detractors as opinions were divided over Apple's drastic Machintosh hardware changes while the company was trying to improve their retail strategy. "Our computer's back looks better than the front of anyone else' s",stated Apple.

Apple declared the "i" from "iMac" to be for "Internet",but also to represent their focus on making a personal device("i" for "individual").The out-of-box experience was given a lot of attention as the iMac requires only two steps in order for a user to set up and connect to the Internet. Actor Jeff Gold Blum narrated an iMac commercial that had the catch phrase "There's no stepĀ hree". Since the iMac line of consumer desktops, Apple had adopted the "i" prefix for all its consumer hardware lines such as the iPod, the iPhone or the iPad, but also for some of its software lines like iTunes, iLife, iWork, etc. In another commercials, Apple represented a race between an iMac and a HP Pavilion meant to establish which device requires less time to set up an Internet connection and the HP Pavilion was still working on it at the end of the commercial and this way the iMac was considered faster.

On July 27, 2010 Apple updated its line of iMac desktop computers to feature the Intel Core processor technology. Both low and high end 21.5" models feature the Core i3 processor but they can be updated to Core i5. The low end 27" model also has an upgradable Core i3 while the high end 27" model has an i5 processor which can be upgraded to Core i7. Alongside with these hardware changes, Apple also replaced the black back of the iMac with a plain aluminum enclosure.
