How Much Is A Billion?

posted in news, by Codrut Nistor

Looking for a one billion website idea? Here's mine - take the one million dollar website(a square with 1000X1000 pixels, each linking to a website, if you want to have your link there, you pay $1), and add a random factor to it - keep the same size of the links area, only that, each time you click a link, all the squares get new random links. To have your link on the screen all the time, you should pay $1,000, instead of only $1. Pretty cool, huh?

Now, that you have your billion dollar idea, let's get to Apple and its App Store, shall we? Why all the above, anyway? The answer is very simple - without bothering to recycle any old idea, Apple managed to come up with a one billion dollar website!

Oh, yeah, one more thing - before talking about the App Store statistics, here's the answer to those wondering "how much is a billion" without any special purpose - it's too much for you, anyway! No offense taken, but I don't think that anyone who has so much money is wondering how many zeroes come to the end. One billion - one thousand millions - 1,000,000,000, and that should answer the question.

Now, "how much is a billion for Apple," that's a very interesting question!

Well, according to a recent report on quarterly smartphone market trends released this Tuesday, Needham & Co. analyst Charlie Wolf wrote that the number of applications currently available on Apple's App Store recently went above 25,000, with actual downloads exceeding 500 million.

After using some math, he ended up with a $800 million yearly estimate for the App Store, but since the number of applications downloaded each quarter is increasing, it's possible to see the store reaching the $1 billion mark by year's end. Even more, some claim the figure can go as high as $1.2 billion, despite all the economic cooldown around!

There you have it - sooner or later, the App Store will be a one billion dollar website! Other than that, I guess we should wait and see what happens next, because I am sure Apple has some nice surprises for us...
