The iPod Touch also is the first in the iPod line to introduce the multi- touch based graphical interface. As of September 2009, Apple registered to have sold over 45 million copies of their Pod Touch. The second generation iPod Touch presented some important improvements from the last model. This one has built in Nike+, Bluetooth support, external volume controls, and the ability to connect speakers, alongside others. Its first encounter with the public took place on September 9, 2008 at the "Let's Rock" event.

Even tough the iPod Touch and iPhone are different in nature, one being used for calling (as the main function, because today's phone is much more than that, especially the iPhone) and one for playing music and videos, basically any digital media type, they are alike when it comes to the used operating system. Both iPhone and iPod use Apple's iOS (formerly called iPhone OS) operating system. The iPod Touch can run many applications, as long as they are approved by Apple itself, and obtained through their online AppStore. Doing otherwise could lead to some serious software malfunctions that will not be covered by your warranty.
Another common feature is the device's input method. Like the iPhone, the iPod Touch has its control built around the multi-touch based LCD screen. The 3.5 inch liquid crystal display is intended for the usage of bare fingers, so normal styluses and gloves will not work with the device, because they are not able to produce the needed amount of electrical conductivity in order for the device to read the gesture as a touch event. However, there are special styluses and gloves that can be used if you want that bad one.

One year after the release of the second generation iPod Touch, Apple decided to use the date of September 9, 2009 as the day the release the third generation of the device, which presents some improvements when it comes to functions from the second generation device, and even more improvements from the original iPod. Some of these features are Voice Control, Light Sensor, and bundled earphones. When released, the iPod Touch of third generation was sold in 16 and 32 GB of flash memory models, but also continued to sell the 8 GB model of the second generation.
