Gorenje iPod Fridge

posted in gadgets, by Codrut Nistor

A few years ago, I was on a information gathering spree. That's what I also do now almost every day, but back then, the purpose was different - I needed a washing machine. While the history of the washer is extremely interesting, I wasn't crazy about that at all and - to be honest - I couldn't care less, but since my father claimed that Gorenje was the first company to manufacture automatic front loading machines in Europe, I started digging in for such a machine. In the end, I didn't get a Gorenje, but the idea is that, after talking with some of my friends, too, I kept in mind the fact that Gorenje products are awesome (no, this is not paid or free advertising!). Just as a side note, I got a BEKO instead of the Gorenje I was looking for, and now it seems this company just entered...the Apple world!

This is not something really surprising, since Gorenje is much more than just "another domestic appliance manufacturer." Just think about these two facts - until 1979, Gorenje manufactured the MGV-176, a submachine gun for the .22 Long Rifle cartdridge, and since 2000, they released co-branded designer kitchen products, their collaborators including Pininfarina, Swarovski, or Ora-Ïto. The black fridge with Swarovski crystals is pure design madness, believe me! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find a black fridge for my kitchen so far, and Swarovski crystal are not exactly to my liking, so let's move on and see what's up with that "iPod fridge!"

Now, Gorenje just presented what is, as far as I can tell, world's first official Apple-licensed "Made for iPod" refrigerator. Don't laugh! I did that earlier, but this fridge won't help you cool down those boiling hot Pussycat Dolls videos stored on your player, and it probably won't help much keeping the design of old iPods alive, as soon as the new iPods will arrive. Anyway, this is not about "inside," since the iPod dock featured by this fridge is - obviously - an external one.

Unfortunately, there's not much to say about the new fridge presented at the IFA 2008 - it's "Made for iPod," as I was just saying, so it features a dock for charging and music/video playback, since it also has integrated speakers and a LCD screen. Maybe the next generation will also be able to sync your iPod's content with the food inside your fridge, who knows? :)

For now, there's no information about pricing or availability, but it's good to know that the iGorenje web portal, just released, comes with recipes, videos, as well as the ability to WiFi control some of your household appliances via a home server. If that's not cool, I am going to sleep in the fridge tonight! ;)
