First time Apple took the wraps of the new OS was in April. The decision of changing the operating system's name was made at the MacWorld conference where Apple CEO announced that the device will not be called anymore iPhone OS, but iOS, due to the fact that not only iPhone users use Apple's platform. This was made because there are a lot of products in the "i" line such as iPad or iPod and you can't use a software called "iPhone OS) on the iPod or iPad. Apple estimates that a good portion of the devices that use its iOS software has nothing in common with thieves. Apart from the 1500 APIs throws at consumers, the iOS 4 also brings 100 new features and enhancements to the software.

The most highlighted features of the new update are the support for multitasking, the events, the places and the faces in the photo's folder, mail or in a unified Inbox on the email. Other features include Quick-Look for enhancements, mail-enhancement, and editing your email attachments to other applications (like Google Reader). You can edit playlists for your iPod directly from your iPhone using Google Reader, and search for stuff on the Web or Wikipedia directly from the Home panel.
Most applications work on the iOS 4 as well as they do on another, earlier iOS, so the new operating system can't benefit from the multitasking found at the 3G and 4 iPhone models. As it was with previous versions, the iOS 4.0 is very easy to install. All you have to do is plug the device in the personal computer, then Sync it to create an up to date backup. Although iTunes is a pretty safe software, it is best to backup your files, just in case.

If iTunes doesn't backup automatically, right click on the phone from iTunes' sidebar and click Sync now. iTunes notify you whenever a new iOS is available, and if you do not get the information, you can go to Check for Updates and get more information there. A dialog box will appear, asking you if you are sure of what are you doing. After you agree, the message will disappear and the phone will install iPhone iOS 4.0.
