The iSght webcam for iMac is a hidden camera behind the glass display at the top of the screen. You don’t need to install drivers to make it work, because it works out-of-the box. You can communicate with the love ones, you can video chat with your colleagues or friends and you can even make presentations to up to three clients from the comfort of your home or office.

The built-in iSight webcam works thanks to its internal USB 2.0 interface. It uses CMOS Active pixel sensor and is fixed-focus with plastic lens. With EyeSight software you can use iMac iSight webcam to keep on eye on your room and your belongings. The software allows the iSight webcam to take a maximum 640 x 480 pixel picture size, but you can adjust it if you want a smaller resolution. The picture formats are the following: bmp, tiff, png and jpg. You can save your picture on disk and if you want you can upload them on a FTP server.

Using your built-in iMac iSght webcam is very easy. You can use it for video conferencing, to do that you must have the following: you can video conference with your family and friends, but they have to have video conferencing capability and an iChat AV user. If you have a dial-up Internet connection you won’t be able to make a video conferencing and to do that you need a local area network or a broadband Internet connection. You must have an AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) account or an AOL (America Online) account because you need these accounts for iChat AV.

To start and video conference you must open iChat AV and click on the Camera button. If your iSght webcam doesn’t work make sure that the “Camera Connected” option is enabled. You will find this option in the Video menu.

To see if your built-in iSight camera captures video, you have to see if the green LED next to it lights. In the mean time iChat AV will send an invitation to your friend or client to participate at your video chat. You can preview and adjust your appearance and when your client or your friend accepts the invitation you will appear on his/her screen and him/she will appear on your screen.

If you want to have a video conference with more than one friend you can use your iSght webcam to do that.  You can have a video conference with 3 friends and two of your friends are participants and one friend is the host of the video conference. To start a video conference with more than one friend you should follow the next steps: you have to open iChat AV and select the friends you want to talk to while you hold down the Command key. After you selected your friends click the Camera button and the video conference can start.

You can also use your built-in iMac iSght webcam to take pictures and to use them as a buddy icon. You can take pictures of your self or of your new acquisitions and use them as your buddy icon so everyone in your Buddy List will be able to see them.

To take pictures of yourself follow the next steps:  first you must open iChat AV and then choose the Change My Picture option from the Buddies menu. A Buddy Picture window will open and after you adjust your appearance click on the Camera Button and select the “Take Video Snapshot” option and that is it. You now have a picture of you to use as your buddy icon and everyone can see your beautiful smile.

If you want to turn off the built-in iSight camera you have to close the iChat window and will see that the green LED next to it will no longer light and that is how you know that your webcam is off.

If this built-in iSght webcam doesn’t meet your expectations you can try the external Apple iSght camera. It has a nice design and provides high quality images and high quality colors. If you are using iChat to communicate with others, this camera is perfect for you because is has a flawless integration with iMovie and iChat AV, but it doesn’t work so well with other messaging applications.

The camera doesn’t come with any software CD or DVD, therefore it doesn’t need installation, and all you have to do is connect it through the FireWire port. The camera also has a sensitive microphone and it is very attractive and sleek. When the iSght camera is plugged in the iChat AV application will be lanced and if you don’t have iChat AV installed on your computer iSght will open a window that will guide you to the installation process.

This great camera comes also with 3 mounting options: a special mount for iBooks and PowerBooks, desktop computer mount and a plastic stand for eMac and a magnetic LCD mount.

You can’t adjust the contrast, the brightness, the color saturation and focus because the camera does all that for you. The sound quality and the images transmitted are great and the camera doesn’t have any problem maintaining constant sound and video.

It is a pricey webcam, but it offers you high quality features: great sound, high quality images and it works very well with iMovie and iChat AV and you can use it for video conference or just to communicate with your colleagues and friends.  You can find it on amazon.com at a price of 299.00 USD.

How To Reinstall My Software On My iMac OS X

posted in software news, by BindApple

Apple iMac’s software works very well in many occasions, but if you find yourself in the situation when you need to reinstall the software on your iMac, you should follow a few easy steps to make a simple and problem-free reinstallation.

If your iMac is not working properly you have to be sure that the problem is a software problem and not a hardware problem, because if it is hardware reinstalling the OS X software on your iMac will not make the hardware problem go away.

Before any type of installation, the best advice you should take in consideration, is to back up your information and your personal files, because if you don’t do that, you have a big chance of loosing them.

There are many ways to back up your information and below we will present 3 of them:

-          The first and the safest one is to copy them on an external hard drive. This is the preferred method because the hard drive is able to store a lot of data in a secure and safe place. If you don’t have an external hard drive, you can always try the method.

-          You can save the files and information on DVDs or CDs. This will take you a lot of time because these store devices have a limited storage capacity. This option can help you if your iMac has a disc burner and if it is bootable.

-          The last option is to save your file and to back up them on-line. The way to do this is to have a MobileMe account or a FTP server account. After you saved them online and you reinstalled your iMac’s software you can copy them back into your computer.

When you decide what to back up, you should save only the useful information, you don’t need to save and you up your applications or your system files. The system files will be restored after the installation process and after that you can install the applications you need.

You can back up the information using a back up application such as Dmailer Back Up which offers you the possibility to store your files in your hard drive, your mp3 player, your USB drive or a network location.

The next step is to insert the Mac OS X DVD that came with your iMac. After you inserted the DVD, your iMac will start up from it. You will see 3 different types of installation to choose from:

-          Archive and Install –this type of installation will move your existing system files and components into the “Previous System” folder. This type of installation will also keep your personal files and your user accounts.

-          Archive and Install (Not Preserving User and Network Settings) – the name says it all. If you choose this type of installation your network setting and your user accounts will be moved into the “Previous System” folder and after the installation is complete you will have to reconfigure the network options and settings and recreate your user accounts. This option doesn’t erase your personal files; they will be saved on the hard drive.

-          Erase and Install - this type of installation will erase all the files and all the information from your iMac’s hard drive and will reinstall the software.

If your iMac doesn’t boot on its on from the Mac OS X Install DVD you can restart the computer and hold down the “C”. You should keep holding down the “C” until you see the Apple logo and a grey screen. The next step is to choose the language, click “Continue”, then click “Agree” at the Software License Agreement. After you did all this step you will have to choose the volume where you want reinstall the software (you will have to have at least 10 GB of free space on that volume) and then choose the installation type you want and the reinstallation will begin.

After the installation you will have to update the software, you can do this by clicking on the Apple icon and selecting the “Soft Update” option.

After the installation is complete, the system will ask you to create your user account and if you choose to save your personal files to the “Previous System” folder you can migrate them into the new system. The idea is to restore them to their corresponding place in the new system.

If you encounter some restrictions which prevent you from copy the information from the “Previous System” to the new one you should create a root user on the new system, log out and then log back in as a root user.

The main idea is to keep your new system clean, therefore do not copy the files you already have on the new system from the “Previous System” folder. An example can be the Safari application. You will find it old Application folder, but if you look in the Application folder you will se that is already there, so you don’t have to replace the new one with the old one. You have to re careful not to over write the existing files with the old ones.

After the files migration you should delete the “Previous System” folder, this will prevent that the application from that folder which you don’t longer need won’t start up by accident.

If you have some new software you want to install, you should install it now but be careful and look into your system because many of the applications you need are already installed.

The final step is to restore your files and information from the external hard drive or from your DVDs.

As you can see, reinstalling the software on your iMac is not a complicated process but you have to be careful at what type of installation you choose, if you want or don’t want to back up your files and finally, to be careful not to overwrite the existing files with the new ones.
