Benefits Of Unlocking iPhone

iPhone was introduced in the USA in 2007 and since then it is one of the greatest smartphones on the market. It attracted a lot of people, because it offers also personal use features, entertainment, connectivity and business tools. It usually comes locked on AT&T carrier, but in short time, the solutions came along. So, phone geeks had an international underground meeting and started working on ways of breaking this strong link between iPhone and AT&T.

Products from Apple are very popular worldwide, and a lot of people from various countries would love to have an iPhone and hold in it a SIM card from a local carrier. It is a great replacement of iPod Touch, and in the beginning the product was limited to the US market, and it could have been acquired only with a commitment to the company AT&T. The phone reached Europe only late fall in the same year, but this didn't mean that all Europeans could have an iPhone in their pockets, it meant that they could read about this cool device, which revolutionized smartphone market.

Americans could consider themselves very lucky to have the possibility to own an iPhone, but this means that they have to agree to AT&T for at least 6 months, and in most cases even more. This was an outrage for most of the customers, but this was a good price for the idea of having a cool and competitive phone in your pocket. In time, the alternative appeared: unlocked iPhone. The wonder was huge when people saw that they could get an iPhone without any commitment, but they were still skeptic.

There are several options for unlocking iPhone, and there are many downsides too for the methods used too. A lot of unlocking solutions require a tech expert or willing to invest a lot of time in the unlocking software, SSH access and bootloader versions. Many people tried to unlock alone their iPhones, and in most of the cases the result was an completely unusable iPhone. Things can easily go wrong, and after few hours of work, you might see that you have destroyed smartphone's software.

Another alternative would be to use a special software which can do that, and out there on the Internet are a lot of such opportunities. You just download the software, you pay for it of course(though recently there are also free unlockers, but hard to find and it's kinda risky), and it does all the work. There are good and sad stories too, so it might be just a matter of luck unlocking your phone. It's good to know that most of software applications which unlock iPhone providers offer you the possibility to unlock as many devices as you wish based on a single membership, and this is cool because your friends and family can benefit from this. iPhone unlocking isn't very expensive, tipically between $15 and $30 and most providers offer a full guarantee (money back), which is also great.

Free unlocking solutions bring also huge risks, but there are also reputable websites which sell special software for unlocking the phone. You should get a membership on one of these websites and be sure that it will work just like you want it.

There are some important consequences for this process which has growing popularity: first of all, a brand new application niche is created, because unlocking is the first step for another important iPhone tuning process, jailbreaking, which allows you to install 3rd party applications on the iPhone. Unlocking means jailbreaking, and this leads to an applications market growth, and this is one of the benefits of the whole process: it brings more applications, and usually they are improved and enhanced to offer users' best performance.

Another aspect would be that somehow it influences geek's world, and this stimulates them to create more efficient unlocking software, and all the companies which offer this kind of services will develop the existing products and they will adapt to the market's situation.
benefits-unlocking-iphone-2

Unlocking means also a wider spread of iPhone, because since it won't be locked anymore on the AT&T's network, you can practically insert any SIM in it, and you can be any communication network's client. This leads to a great international spread of this little miracle product, and it offers many people the opportunity to have it in their pockets.

Of course, one of the important aspects would be that AT&T will loose clients. This is certain, but somehow the limitations imposed by this carries didn't offer complete satisfaction to the clients, and they usually want to be free. They don't like commitments, and they like to customize their device just according to their preferences and needs.

This unlocking process implies both positive and negative consequences, and it depends which group you belong to: customer, developer, unlocking service retailer or AT&T's or Apple's employees. You should think twice before unlocking the phone and see what benefits will this bring you and be sure that there are risks also,if you plan to do this.

iPhone 2G

Even if you love Apple or hate it, you must think of the revolution this company made on smartphones market. Before the first iPhone was released, the coolest and the top selling phone for the past years was Motorola RAZR. This smartphone is on the first place, it is a leader market, and for sure it is the best selling phone in the last year. There are almost two years since the original iPhone has been released, and only few months ago the 3G version was released. Both phones miss some features, but the current version is much better, it definitely has some cool improvements. I will just briefly analyze in this article the differences between iPhone 2G and the newer version, 3G.

There aren't too many differences in the design matter, but I will point out the existing ones, before getting to the inner parts. The screens are both the same size, 3.5'', and they have the same 480x320 resolution. The original iPhone has a smooth metallic finish on the rear, with a black strip at the bottom. On the front part, it has a shiny metal piece, which is around the side of the phone, and it also goes behind of the screen. 3G has a piano black or white finish and the shiny metal piece is around the screen. iPhone 3G also has buttons made of a metal, excluding the Home button. This makes iPhone 3G look sturdier than the original version. The shape is a big difference between these two models, and I would like to point out that 2G is a little thicker and flat when set down, and that 3G is a little bit more round. Some people say that 3G's screen heats at a warmer temperature than 2G's screen does.

Let's get to the inside part, and we can observe that 3G has outstanding features compared to the original version. iPhone 2G supported WiFi, GSM and Bluetooth, but iPhone 3G supports, as the name suggests, 3G technology next to WiFi, GSM and Bluetooth. This makes surfing, watching videos and downloading better experiences, and the frequencies supported by the first generation didn't include UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz), which are available on iPhone 3G.

A new feature on the latest model is GPS, which is absolutely necessary nowadays. Both smartphones have 2MP cameras, but none has the video recording feature. iPhone 3G weighs 0.1 ounces less than the previous version, which weighted 4.8 ounces. 3G's big disappointment would be that its battery drains fast. iPhone 2G rocks because it has 8 hours of talk-time and 3G offers 5 hours.

Comparing these two great phones is quite hard, but 3G was definitely a good decision of Apple. iPhone 2G remains a market pioneer,it is an impressive product, but 3G's features are somehow common requirements for the modern smartphone user, and this new model fulfills a lot of consumers' needs.

Formatting iMac

Partitioning a hard drive means dividing a hard drive into separate sections called "volumes" There can be 16 different partitions on a hard disk, and they can have any size and format, and you can also set the "MS-DOS" format, for using PC's in networks. If you have bigger hard drives, it is obvious why would you like to partition them. It can be done for organizing the files, and make special partitions for various file types, or just more efficient sections, much easy to manage.

When purchasing a new hard disk for your Mac, even if it is SATA/ATA(and this means internal) or FireWire (external), the box the hard drive is in will tell you if the drive works both on Macs and PCs. New hard drives might have a 2 Gb file size limit, but there are hard disks which have no limitations. Even if you intend to partition or not the hard disk you should format it before using it. If you got a new FireWire disk and you want to use it both on Macs and PCs, then it doesn't need any format.

Disk Utility is the application which helps you perform disk-related tasks in Mac operating system. The application has been developed by Apple, and the possible tasks are: creation, compression conversion or encryption of disk images, on a large range of formats, mount, unmount and eject disks, verifying disks integrity and sometimes repairing them, disk erasing, formatting and partitioning, modifying RAID sets, restoring volumes from images, burning disks in HFS+ format and many other utilities. This utility can be accessed from Mac OS X command line too, using the diskutil and hdutil commands. This utility has been updated along with the OS development, and in Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard it has the great ability of creating, resizing and also deleting disk partitions without erasing them, and this process is known as live partitioning.
formatting-imac2

For formatting a volume you should go to "Erase" section in the Disk Utility window, and then choose the volume you want to be formatted, then the format you would like on it, and edit the "Name" field. The Security Options also have to be modified, and you can choose between: "Don't Erase Data", "Zero Out Data", "7-Pass Erase", or "35-Pass Erase". All these options are explained, and you should pick one according to your needs. If you followed all these steps, the process is ready to start and all you have to do is click on "Erase". The status bar will appear and it shows the progress of the formatting process. When the format is complete, you will notice the disk remount in Disk Utility's window.

The formatting/partitioning process is the same for Tiger and Leopard systems, but the Disk Utility application has different interfaces for those two types of systems. In Leopard, there are no default drives selected in the left column. The tab "Partitioning" is not available as it is in Tiger. You should select the hard drive you want to partition/format in the left column. The partition tab will appear only after selecting a hard drive, and there you have the options to edit the Name and the Format sections, and you should tick a box , "Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed", if it really is so.
formatting-imac3

In the partition tab you should select the number of the partitions you want to edit, and then you can customize the settings, and you can also choose which partition will be Journaled (this means that it will serve as boot volume. If you want to store data or media, you should also choose Mac OS Extended and you can change the size of the partitions by dragging the button found in the Volume Scheme section. After you set up all the things required, click on "Apply" and the process starts. In Tiger, the process is very similar, just there are some differences in selecting and naming the volumes and in the journaling settings.

Apple iPhone SDK

posted in software news, by BindApple

iPhone's OS is the operating system developed by Apple for this device, and for iPod Touch too. This OS is derived from Mac OS X, and it has four abstraction levels: the Core OS layer, the Services layer, Media level and the Cocoa Touch level. The OS takes less than 240 Mb of the memory storage capacity of the device, and is 2008, Steve Jobs announced that they released a software development kit (SDK).This kit allows developers to create applications for iPhone and iPod Touch and test them in an iPhone simulator.

You can upload an application onto a device only after you pay the iPhone Developer Program fee, and since the release of XCode 3.1, XCode is the main development environment for the iPhone SDK. Developers can set any price for their applications distributed through the App Store, but above a minimum settled by Apple. They will receive 70% share and they also can opt to release the applications free on the market, and actually they don't have to pay any costs related to the application, with the exception of the membership fee.

There has been some controversy since SDK release, because if someone purchases an application from the Apple App Store, 30% of the price goes to the company, and 70% to the developer. If there is granted a refund to the customer, then 30% comes from Apple and 70% from the developer. Apple reserves itself the right to take another 30% of the cost from the developer to make up the loss.

iPhone SDK was announced on March 6 2008, during an Apple Town Hall meeting, and the first Beta release was available immediately. The launch of the App Store needed for a firmware update which appeared in July 2008. The update costs $9.95 for iPod Touch owners, and there have been several updates to the first version. It is continuously improved, and it adapts to developers' fast progress.
apple-iphone-sdk

The iPhone OS uses a variation of the XNU kernel, and this can be found also in Mac OS X. This tool chain is used for development on the iPhone OS, and it is based on Xcode.

This SDK has been broken down into sets, for a better organization of the activities: Cocoa Touch (Multi-touch events and controls, Accelerometer support, View hierarchy, Localization and Camera Support), Media (OpenAL, audio mixing and recording, Video playback, Image file formats, Quartz, Core Animation and OpenGL ES) Core Services ( Networking, Embedded SQLite database, Core Location and Threads) and finally OS X Kernel, TCP/IP Sockets, Power management, File system and Security).
apple-iphone-sdk-2

SDK, along with all these sets, and the Xcode toolchain integrates also an iPhone Simlator, which emulates the look of the iPhone. It was initially named Aspen, but afterward it was renamed when Beta 2 version of the SDK was launched. This simulator is not an emulator, but it runs code generated for an x86 target.

The Apple Software Development Kit requires an Intel Mac computer, because it doesn't work on Microsoft Windows or other operating systems. Downloading and using SDK itself is free, but for releasing software you have to enroll in the iPhone Developer Program, and this means paying a fee and you also need Apple's approval. In March 2009, the enrollment fee in the iPhone development program was $99 per year. Apple hasn't announced anything about enabling Java on iPhone. Sun Microsystems wants to release a Virtual Machine for iPhone OS, and this would allow Java apps to run on iPhone and iPod Touch.
apple-iphone-sdk-22

iPhone OS doesn't support Flash either, and Adobe is planning to release a Flash Liter version software application for the iPhone, but taking into account that iPhone supports third party applications only when it is jailbroken, we can only expect and see what will happen in the future with all these third party applications. Flash videos can be seen on iPhone with applications like iMobileCinema.

In 2009, July, geohot released an application for jailbreaking iPhone with 3.0 software, named purplera1n, and I bet that in time this will be improved and there will be a lot of possibilities for jailbreaking iPhone.

Gestures Drivers For Macbook Pro

posted in hardware, by BindApple

MacBook Air has an interesting multi-touch capable trackpad, which also supports gestures. But there are the other versions of the Mac notebook, like MacBook and MacBook Pro which also support gestures.

The gestures are pretty simple, like pinching, expanding and rotate, but I would like to describe them briefly for those who don't know them.

Screen Zoom: For this, you should hold the CTRL key, place two fingers on the trackpad, and then move your fingers up for zooming in, and if you want to zoom out, you should move the fingers down.
gestures-drivers-for-macbook-pro

For Scrooling, place two fingers on the trackpad, and then move them up and down or side to side if you want to scroll the active window. This requires scrollbars and you also need a place to scroll too). Leopard supports also a diagonal scroll, if you have activated both "Use two fingers to scroll" and "Allow horizontal scrolling" in the System Preferences edit window, in the section Keyboard and Mouse-> Trackpad.

Tapping on something will be the same as clicking on something if you enable "Clicking" in System Preferences > Keyboard and Mouse > Trackpad

Click and Drag is also possible, and you can do this by double tapping on the trackpad, and then dragging without lifting the finger. These two actions must be also enabled in the Trackpad settings, in System Preferences, tab Keyboard and Mouse.

Drag Lock works with Click and Drag, and it requires to tap once on the trackpad for releasing a dragged item. All these three actions must be all enabled in System Preferences->Keyboard and Mouse->Trackpad.
gestures-drivers-for-macbook-pro2

The Secondary Click gesture does the same thing as the right click of a mouse or CTRL+click does, and you can use it to open a contextual menu. This can be done easily by tapping on an item with two fingers on your notebook's trackpad.

The drivers for these gestures usually come with the installation CD, and they can be re-installed only with a new reinstallation of the OS. Synaptics, which is the driver provider for many of the laptops with trackpads, has released an upgrade which allows two new types of finger gestures and controlling the applications with finger movements. Synaptics has developed this system similarly to the one used by Apple on MacBook, and the most interesting feature in here is "ChiralTouch", which detects circular movement on the trackpad, and it converts it into scrolling or rotation. There are more than 100 applications support these new motions, and wait, there are more to come. You should check your laptop manufacturer's site and see if there is an available updated driver for your model.
