Music is a very important aspect in people's life. Even if you are home, at work, jogging, at gym or fishing, music completes all the segments of life. But you can't listen to music out loud everywhere. In some places you just got to keep the music for yourself, and what better way there is than an cute, funky, little iPod.

The iPod is brand of portable media players designed and marketed by Apple Inc. Some ask when did the iPod come out. Well, it has been in our lives from October 23, 2001.

Apple Inc. offers a various range of iPods, from the hard drive-based iPod classic, the touchscreen iPod Touch, the video-capable iPod Nano to the compact iPod Shuffle.

iPod Classic models store media on an internal hard drive, while all other models use flash memory to enable their smaller size. As with many other digital music players, iPods can also serve as external data storage devices. Storage capacity varies by model.

At first the Apple Inc. corporation wasn't sure about the success that iPod would know. They were a little skeptical about this item being sold to a large number of people, but when the iPod came out was a shock for everyone.

As of September 2008, more than 173,000,000 iPods had been sold worldwide, making it the best-selling digital audio player series in history. The product was developed in less than one year and unveiled on 23 October 2001. Jobs announced it as a Mac-compatible product with a 5 GB hard drive that put "1,000 songs in your pocket". Apple contracted another company, Pixo, to help design and implement the user interface under the direct supervision of Steve Jobs.

At first, Apple Inc. wasn't sure abut the success that iPod would know. They were a little skeptical about this item being sold to a large number of people.

The name iPod was proposed by Vinnie Chieco, who was called by Apple to figure out how to introduce the new player to the public. After Chieco saw a prototype, he thought of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey and the phrase "Open the pod bay door, Hal!", which refers to the white EVA Pods of the Discovery One spaceship. Apple researched the trademark and found that it was already in use. Joseph N. Grasso of New Jersey had originally listed an "iPod" trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in July 2000 for Internet kiosks. The first iPod kiosks had been demonstrated to the public in New Jersey in March 1998, and commercial use began in January 2000, but had apparently been discontinued by 2001. The trademark was registered by the USPTO in November 2003, and Grasso assigned it to Apple Computer, Inc. in 2005.

32 Gig iPhone Rumor

A 32 Gb iPhone? Truth, fiction or just rumors? If they are just rumors, they tend to become a reality! Figuring us phones tend to equalize PCs in recent times, should be no surprise if these rumors are true.

Of course rumors just do not talk about a larger memory alone, they say it would be about a faster processor, more RAM, improved battery life, OLED screen and a rubber backing. Sounds good, right? Wait to see what follows!

It seems that because of the emergence of 32 GB iPhone, the old version, the 8 Gb, could cost only 9.99$! Good news for those who want one but do not want to throw too much money for it.

Other rumors say that there will be two versions: the 32 Gb iPhone mentioned earlier and a low-end version which will go towards third world countries like India and China. Of course that cheaper does not mean that it's bad or will not have 3G, still may not have WiFi, what I think is very pathetic! I think most would prefer a phone that have WiFi than one 3G.

Let's see how expensive will be and how well sold. But given that will have 32 Gb and will be the top technology iPhone, the price will certainly be big enough so, considering the competition offering lower prices and performing similar or even better, may not become the most sold product on the market, but let's not forget the iPhone "fans" who will buy for sure and that probably will make the biggest sales.

Also, nobody knows yet how it will look so the image is just one of the possibilities.

In the meantime, until the rumors about the 32 Gb iPhone will be dispelled or confirmed we can only wait and see what will happen!

Why Won’t My iMac Start?

If the iMac does not turns off, and already you're too pissed to try something else because whatever you have done earlier you can not do again without wasting precious time, the choice is simple: out of the socket and everything is resolved. But if the iMac doesn't start? What are you doing?
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
I never had this problem, primarily because I do not have a iMac, however, a friend of mine had this problem and because it was quite difficult to solve so I thought to help. So these are some answers to the question: why won't iMac start?

How many of you, regardless of the product concerned, look over the instruction manual? No matter how serious or not the problems are, none of us do not even think to do that! Admit it! I do not think you opened the instruction manual to any product. The only contact we have with it is when we remove the product out of the box. So, my first advice would be to consult the manual, you will be surprised how useful can it be!

Secondly, try searching the problem on Google, there are plenty of forums that talk about it. Looking on the internet the problem of my friend, I came across this site: http://www.macfixit.com/staticpages/index.php?page=20031209121115375 that I think will be more helpful.  On Google you can find several such sites, in my opinion, very useful.

My friend had a battery problem, nothing serious but the fact that information found on the Internet have saved some money means something, right? I mean I do not think anyone likes to throw some money gully. Instead of paying experts in these things, he just bought a battery and replaces the old himself. So follow my advice and you will get out of these thing cheaper.

BIOS Settings On MacBook

No comments

posted in software news, by BindApple

MacBooks don't have BIOS, but they use Intel's Extensible Firmware Interface or OpenFirmware. Beyond the different disk formats used by Macs (HFS+) and Windows, (FAT or NTFS), there are problems about the partitioning system too, which is directly linked to platform's firmware. Prior to the Intel Mac series released in 2006, Apple had been using Open Firmware on all systems, and also their disk partitonary module, called APD. New Intel Macs can read but not book from the latest APM drives.BIOS-based computers always have had used MBR and EFI introduced the new GPT format.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
The Unified Extensible Firmware Interface, or UEFI, which was previously known as EFI specification is a interface between the OS and platform firmware. This interface consists of data tables which contain information about boot service calls, platform-related data and runtime service calls, which are available for the OS and for the loader. All this information provides a standard environment for booting the OS and for the pre-boot applications.

UEFI was initially designed for the next generation of IA computers, and it is a development of the "Intel® Boot Initiative" (IBI), an Intel program which began in 1998. The original version was named EFI, and it ended with EFI 1.10. The Unified EFI Forum was formed in 2005, and it is an organization which promotes continous EFI specification development. Relying on EFI 1.10 specification, this group released a new version, named Unified EFI. You can check the latest version of the UEFI specification on their website, here.

The framework for this interface is a product-strenght firmware implementation and it conforms to this interface specification. It is composed of a set of architectural interfaces, all implemented in C, and they have been designed to enable this firmware industry. The framework specifications are migrating towards the UEFI Platform Initialization, and they are designed to perform the full range of basic operations required to power the platform and initialize it and also control and start the operating system. The typical scheme of the firmware on Intel architecture based system is the following:
bios-settings-on-macbook

EFI uses a modular component design and language coding at highest levels, where this is possible; it is designed to support innovation and full-power capabilities of the preboot environment, and it provides a single code base which is the same for all platforms in the Intel architecture family, and this means that it serves all the needs from high-end servers to handheld devices.

Open firmware, or OpenBoot defines the intefaces of the computer's firmware system, and it has been created by Sun, and used by Sun, Apple, IBM and many other non-x86 chipset manufacturers. This allows loading of platform-independent drivers from the PCI card, and this means better compatibility. Open Firmware can be accessed through the Forth languale interface and it offers the same functionality as the later EFI version. A lot of commercial implementations have been released to the community of Open Source in 2006, and these implementations include Sun OpenBoot, Firmworks OpenFirmware and Codegen SmartFirmware. This Sun implementation is available under a BSD license ( Berkeley Software Distribution, a family of permissive free software licenses).

Open Firmware is accessible by pressing Command-Option-O-F at startup. When you run an OS besides Mac OS X, the computer will emulate BIOS in the EFI, but it is not directly accesible to the common users. The Open Firmware interface is generally used by developers or IT personnel, and for the common users, Mac OS X offers a graphical user interface, for changing the basic settings. For example it is possible to set the boot disk or partition without accessing the OF interface. Many other OF settings can be changed using the nvram command, even when the system software is running.

EFI is just an improved OpenFirmware, and the EFI based GUID Partition Table isn't a too big leap from APM either. A significant amount of work was required to make Macs work perfect under EFI, but it wasn't a revolution, it is just a big difference in details and semantics. For the end user, it actually is a working interface, and it offers more security, because it isn't so easy accessible, and the risks of breaking something is smaller.
