Chess For iPhone!

Back in the days when I was a little kid, my grandfather taught me how to play chess. Unfortunately for him, my n00bish days ran out pretty quick, and I started to beat him before going to school. Over a decade after that, I started to play chess with computers, and I suddenly found myself cornered. In the meantime, my best chess partner was my uncle, but he wasn't kicking my ass all the time... and now, it seems virtual partners are showing up everywhere, including on tiny handheld devices.

Obviously, I am talking about chess for iPhone and iPod Touch here, and today's pick is called Deep Green. Why Deep Green? (just think about the deep grin you'll get when beating it! ;)) Simply because Cocoa Stuff updated this chess for iPhone app less than a day ago, bringing the current version number up to 1.1, that's why! I hope you don't need any other reason...

... but if you do, here's the features list of Deep Green:

- Play against Engine or Human, or Engine versus Engine
- Adjustable Engine strength
- Concentration setting allowing the Engine to play more like a Human
- Manual board setup
- Game playback - First/previous/next/last position, auto-playback, drag slider
- Replay of last move
- Move suggestion animated on board
- Take back - Undo, all the way back to start
- Free choice between tap/tap and drag/drop moving (no need to set preference)
- Display of Captured Pieces
- Smooth animations everywhere
- Game and state saved between program sessions
- Built-in Help
- Rich, analog-type sounds, optional
- Callout notification for Check, Stalemate, and Checkmate
- Vibration on Check, Stalemate and Checkmate, optional
- Board Coordinates
- Board Auto-Rotation

Requiring iPhone or iPod Touch 2.1 or later, Deep Green 1.1 needs only 4.3 MB of free space, and it also comes as a free version, simply entitled "Deep Green Lite." Deep Green 1.1 for iPhone is priced at $7.99, and can be purchased via the iTunes App Store, while the Lite edition can be downloaded from this page.

Software Submission Service For Mac

Just... please, don't tell me you're looking for a software submission service! I know, it may be pretty hard to promote shareware programs these days, but I have to disagree with automatic submissions, in most cases. The reason? Well, it's easy - you should first see all the directories your program will end up in, since some of them may do more harm than good for it. I am not getting deeper into that, because - no matter how much I like it or not - I got a little something for you...
sharewarepublisher 1.0

... and I give you no guesses to figure out what it is - we're talking about a software submission service for Mac, shaped as a software application. Its name? Nothing fancy here, just "SharewarePublisher" and, to make it even more interesting, we're talking about a proggie that's brand new on the market - current version is labeled 1.0, and nothing more!

Described as a "software submission tool and assistant for Mac OS X," SharewarePublisher 1.0 comes with a wide array of features, including(but not limited to) the following:

- Time-efficient semi-automated submission
- Built-in list of almost 200 leading shareware sites
- Predefined submission URLs
- Easy management of listing URLs
- Integrated two-tab web viewer
- Auto-fill submission forms
- Auto-learn submission forms
- User ID and password management
- Site-specific categories
- To-do list
- Submission history
- PAD file support
- Built specifically for the Mac

SharewarePublisher 1.0 requires Mac OS X Version 10.5 Leopard or later, and at least 4.1 MB of disk space, coming shaped as Universal Binary for both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs.

The best part comes in the end, as usual - until the end of June, this software submission service for Mac is available for an introductory offer of EUR39.99, and then it's going to go all the way up to EUR69.99. Where? Heh, it seems more and more producers leave the App Store idea aside, and this time it happened the same - SharewarePublisher 1.0 can be purchased from here, while a 30-day trial is also available.

The Ultimate File Search Program For Mac

posted in software news, by Codrut Nistor

When talking about file search, I really pity those who start doing it the old way, looking in the folders where they think the item in need could reside. Cute, but WRONG!!! So damn wrong! If you need a file search program and you don't know yet what you need, here's something to help you realize that - HoudahSpot!
Ultimate File Search Program HoudahSpot

Houdah Software's HoudahSpot is a piece of code that just reached version 2.5, and its main purpose is to help you create detailed queries, and pinpoint the exact file you want to get to. Basically, we're talking about a Spotlight front-end, and its latest version comes as a free update to existing users, adding the "any text" criterion, as well as grid and CoverFlow result views.

The features that should make you interested in this piece of code, if you didn't get it yet, are listed below:

- Faster than Spotlight: the search starts only at your command
- More precise than Spotlight: pinpoint files using a myriad of criteria
- More detailed than Spotlight: show any number of columns
- Fully customizable: set your preferred criteria, columns and sort order
- BlitzSearch: the convenience of Spotlight, the power of HoudahSpot

Priced at $25, this file search program for Mac can be purchased via Houdah Software's online store, and requires at least 8 MB of hard drive space and Mac OS X Version 10.5 Leopard. Obviously, your OS should have Spotlight enabled, and the best part of it all is that HoudahSpot comes as Universal Binary code, so it works great with both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs.

Check For Duplicate Files On Your Mac

posted in software news, by Codrut Nistor

No matter how large your hard drive may be, duplicate files aren't something to wish for. The only case I think this should happen is when you have the original, and a backup, archived copy. Unfortunately, this is the ideal situation and, as we all know, reality is usually far from being perfect. Well, today I'll help you check for duplicate files on your Mac without having to go through all of them the old school way...
check for duplicate files mac

Decloner 1.0 is a product that just arrived on the market, but PixelEspresso's utility packs quite a powerful punch for those in need of a tool to help them check for duplicate files. As I said a bit earlier, for most of us space isn't a problem any longer, but you wouldn't like to waste time looking for the file you updated last time, with a handful of them having the same name!

Anyway, let's cut the story short and take a look at the features included in Decloner 1.0, shall we?

- compares files using SHA-1 hash algorithm for reliability
- has simple and straightforward user interface
- can process large number of files quickly
- displays file information and supports QuickLook
- allows deletion of individual files as well as marking multiple files for bulk deletion
- moves deleted files into the Trash to enable the user to restore them if necessary
- supports file name exclusion lists
- ignores files smaller than the user-defined size

Available as a free 30-day trial, Decloner is priced at $19.95 and requires only 5 MB of free disk space, running on any Mac OS X version since 10.5 Leopard. To purchase it, you won't have to go through the iTunes App Store pain once again, because this program is available via the PixelEspresso online store, here.
