iMac G4 Specs

posted in hardware, by Codrut Nistor

Some computers will be always remembered, and while I don't think most of us will still use what they have on the desk now in 2015, Apple computers from the past still refuse to pull back and go into eternal sleep. The iMac G4 is a great example, because those oldies' design can easily face most computers produced these days, and the later models can also handle most modern applications without too many problems. These being said, I think it's a pretty good idea to talk about the iMac G4 specs, don't you agree?
iMac G4 Specs

First, a short history lesson. The iMac G4 isn't a decade old yet, but I am sure it will reach that age and still fulfill a lot of people's basic computing needs. Why? Just take a look at the image above, and you'll surely agree with me that the design won't get old anytime soon! Of course, a design it's enough to keep a computer in use, so let's move on and see why is the iMac G4 still a capable machine...

The iMac G4 arrived in early 2002, replacing the iMac G3, and was discontinued in mid 2004. Sold as "The New iMac," it became simply "iMac G4" as soon as the iMac G5 took its place.

First, the iMac G4 specs included a 15-inch LCD, and a PPC 74xx-series CPU, as well as a tray-loading optical drive, which was replaced by the slot-loading drive in the future iMac generations, starting with the G5.

Later, the iMac G4 specs became even more interesting, with the introduction of 17-inch and 20-inch widescreen LCDs, but this also came with a problem - the price was pretty high for that period, since LCD technology wasn't ready to go mainstream yet...

Talking about processor speed, the slowest iMac G4 had a 700MHz one, and the top-of-the-line iMac G4 went as high as the 1.25GHz G4 processor.

Since I mentioned the top-of-the-line iMac G4, let's take a look at its other specs: 256 MB of RAM (333 MHz PC2700 DDR SDRAM), 80 GB Ultra ATA/100 hard drive spinning at 7200 RPM, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra graphics with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM (AGP 4X support), as well as optional cards support for AirPort Extreme (802.11g) and Bluetooth.

At last, let's leave the iMac G4 specs and point out a few movies where you can spot the iMac G4, shall we? In "The Pacifier," Seth Plummer has an iMac G4 in his room; "Meet the Fockers" also has iMac G4s, with Jack Byrnes having an entire learning room with several of them; in seasons 2 and 3 of "Alias," Jennifer Garner's character has the iMac G4 in her home office. Obviously, these are only a few examples, but before taking a look at the iMac G4 specs, you should take a look at its design, that's all I wanted to say...

WhoPaste 1.0 Is Ready!

One of the most silly activities I can think about is copy-paste. Obviously, it's no big deal to do it a few times a day, but when you really have no alternative but do major copy-paste work, it really becomes something I'd only wish to happen to my worst enemies. For example, if you have some contacts nicely arranged in a text file, and you need to extract name, address, and phone number, all in individual fields of a database.
WhoPaste 1.0

"Austin based Mac-Chi is pleased to announce WhoPaste 1.0, a powerful contact acquisition utility for the Mac OS X Address Book. WhoPaste can create an Address Book contact by extracting the name, email addresses, phone numbers, street addresses, websites, even instant message handles from the current contents of the clipboard. WhoPaste is invoked by a user-configurable global hot key, so it is instantly available in any application. Address Book is not required to be running."

Now you know that WhoPaste can handle a task similar to the one I described in the beginning, but I guess we should also see the detailed features of this program, don't you think? OK, here we go...

- Instantly available in any application
- Customizable global hot key
- Automatic citation of the source of the information
- User review of proposed contact record prior to saving
- Many defaults available to customize behavior
- Add contact to as many as 3 Address Book groups
- Return to current application immediately after dismissing review window (save or cancel)
- AppleScript support provides for creating a contact from current clipboard or the contents of a file
- Built-in application version update notification and self updating (Sparkle)

Priced at $10, WhoPaste 1.0 is available on its own website, and the good news is that, as long as you have at least Mac OS X 10.4, a G3 processor running at 400MHz should be enough to run it! Oh, yeah, one more thing - once you download the app, you'll have 12 days available to try it for free! ;)

Doomsday Terminal – Countdown To Extinction

Do you believe we're already in the Doomsday Terminal, ready to go straight to hell in a few years? I guess not, especially since the entire mumbo-jumbo around the so-called "End of all Days/Doomsday/whatever" gives new dates for this last day of our world, it doesn't happen, then somebody comes up with a new date, and so on. In the end, we'll end our own existence, and not some interstellar bastard, the Antichrist, or the Big Gorilla.
Doomsday Terminal

If you're really into these theories, then I am sure you'd like to save the world from time to time, especially if you have a countdown to extinction on your iPod Touch or iPhone. What needs to be done? Well, buy Doomsday Terminal, and then enter the required code to save the world, from time to time!

I know - it sounds silly, don't you agree? Anyway, a lot of things that sound silly in theory are successful, and it seems Doomsday Terminal is also ready to join that club...

This game is all about entering "a code every 108 minutes in order to prevent the destruction of the world," and now it can also bring you some cash..."As an act of contrition SmallRock Software has also announced that the first Doomsday Terminal user to survive for a week will receive a $200 (USD) gift card of their choice." Pretty cool, huh?

Available for just $0.99 through Apple's App Store, Doomsday Terminal works with all iPhone and iPod Touch devices using software version 2.2 or above, packing the following features:

- The clock is always running; Every time you open the program it knows how much time has passed
- Two-tiered warning sound effects; live and die by them
- Send and receive anonymous messages via the terminal
- Watch survival times online to see who the real hero is
- Discover other commands via the command line

So...are you ready to save the world, and also earn some cash in the process? If the answer is positive, then grab Doomsday Terminal and go for it!;)

Gas Reimbursement, Made Easier!

posted in software news, by Codrut Nistor

These days, everyone seems to be expert in economics. It doesn't matter how bad is your business doing, there's always somebody else's fault, that's the approach I see for most of the time, but when your government tries to deny your small company any gas reimbursement...it gets really ugly. Don't worry, this didn't happen anywhere, it was just about to happen, but it seems public pressure still works.
Gas Reimbursement

Now, if you're looking to optimize gas reimbursement and other similar things that could help you go through the crisis easier, why not use a specialized piece of code? Even better, I just got news about such a program that sells for half the price, at least until the 15th of the month. Let's see more about it, shall we?

The story goes like this - "Izatt has announced it is offering the full version of MileBug for 50% off as a Tax-Day Sale. In order to help tax filers have a better tax time next year, Izatt is offering MileBug at a substantial discount through April 15th. MileBug helps those driving their own vehicles for business, charity, medical, or other reasons receive their reimbursement and/or tax deduction. MileBug provides the option to track miles or kilometers as well as enter custom rates."

The 1.3 version of the program comes with the following features/fixes:

- Origin or Start Location
- International currency support
- Grand totals (km/miles and deduction) across businesses
- Display vehicle in trip list
- Additional instructions on key screens
- Localized to Swedish
- Bug fix - Swedish support on dates in report

Having MileBug for half the price means you'll only have to pay $1.99 for it, and the last things you should know now are these: the program is available for both the iPhone and iPod Touch, and you can download/purchase it via Apple's App Store. Ta-taa! :)

Smackarooni For iPhone

posted in software news, by Codrut Nistor

For most of us, winter's gone, but that doesn't mean we can't have a decent snowball fight anymore! How's that possible? Well, you need two things - Smackarooni and an iPhone, or at least the iPod Touch. Got'em? Good, then read on...
Smackarooni for iPhone

What is this Smackarooni thing? Hehe, here you have it, right from the boiling hot press release we got a few hours ago - "Smackarooni is full of in-your-face action for players to load, throw and dodge their way through a virtual snowball fight. The object of the game is to hit your opponent with a snowball, without getting hit yourself. Players score a point for each hit. The game can be played alone in single-player mode or against a friend in Wi-Fi mode."

Wi-Fi snowball fights? Damn, that's awesome! It doesn't matter if you miss snow, but you won't miss snowball fights, and to make it more interesting, here's the full features list of the game:

- Play against Smacky in single-player mode
- Play against your friends in multiplayer mode
- Works over Wi-Fi with no additional setup
- Single-player mode includes varying difficulty levels
- Choose your character
- High replayability
- Almost as fun as a real snowball fight!

Oh, yeah, Smackarooni 1.0 for iPhone(and iPod Touch, obviously) is priced at $1.99, and available exclusively through Apple's App Store, but you can also get some evaluation copy if you ask for it...
