Meet HOTorNOT!

Today, I will reveal another of my secrets to you - I hate dating websites! Not that I have something against people looking to find their true love using the Internet, but simply because such sites are, in most cases, a waste of time for those using them. This is not something I just say because that's how I see things - I happen to know some people who lost a lot of time and energy on such sites and ended up as alone as they were in first place. Anyway, let's get to our iPhone and meet HOTorNOT on this platform, shall we?
Meet HOTorNOT

No, no, you don't really have to click the link above! Just hear this - "HOT or NOT - the #1 Social Entertainment Networkâ„¢. Its the easy fast way to rate, meet and date hot single local women and men, find new friends & networking buddies, or hook-up and chat with romance partners." Satisfied?

Well, if this sounds interesting to you, here's something even better - those behind the HOTorNOT website just released what they claim to be "the first-ever mobile dating application for the iPhone and iPod Touch," and since I have no idea about no other app, I guess they are even telling the truth!

To meet HOTorNOT on your iPhone, you can easily grab the free app from Apple's App Store, and then take full advantage of the features offered - sync with your existing HOTorNOT account, complete support for e-mail, DoubleMatches and favorites, as well as live chat and HOTLists.

Anyway, my final advice is this - go to a bar, a library, or even look around you in the office - there's always more to the real life than the virtual world we all enjoy more or less...

iPhone Software Update 2.2.1

I love Tom & Jerry. I think there's no "too old" when talking about those two immortal cartoon characters. When I heard that some people were trying to ban them because "violence," I saw red. Those people deserve to be shot in their knees and left in the middle of the desert! Anyway, you probably ask yourselves about the connection between Apple and Tom & Jerry, so here it is - I think Apple and those involved in jailbreaking the iPhone are playing a cat and mouse game.
iPhone Software Update 2.2.1

To make it clear, here's how it works - as soon as those jailbreaking guys get closer to jailbreaking the current iPhone sofware, BAM! Apple strikes with a new one! After all, they kept releasing updates for over a year now, but no copy/paste feature has been added yet, so don't tell me "Apple is listening to its customers," I won't buy that! They may be listening to them in other cases, but not now!

These being said, let's take a look at the iPhone software update 2.2.1, released only a few hours ago by Apple... since the official iPhone page still shows 2.2 as being the last firmware available, which makes it even more interesting.

The iPhone software update 2.2.1 is as large as 246.4MB, and it is said to "improve the general stability of Safari," as well as being able to fix "an issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll."

On the other hand, the iPod Touch owners updating their software will take advantage of the fixes above, but they'll also have one less issue to worry about - some Apple Losless files that had problems until now will work fine from now on.

As you probably figured out already, the iPhone software update 2.2.1 will work with both iPhone and iPod Touch generations, and performing the update is done as always - fire up iTunes 8, connect the device, select it, and click "Check for Update," then "Download and Install," followed by a few beers, until the process is done.

Ta-taaa! ...and the cat and mouse game goes on, and on, and on...

NVIDIA Graphics Update!

Finally, Apple came up with a NVIDIA graphics update, the first one this year. What I really find funny with these updates is seeing sentences like "boosts HD video performance," just like Macs using NVIDIA video chipsets were sent to their knees by HD content, and now we're having a messianic driver update! Anyway, updates are updates, so let's check those few details available about this NVIDIA graphics update, 2009 edition, shall we?
NVIDIA Graphics Update

Posted on the 26th of January, this update has a very laconic description, as usual. You can see it below:

"This update improves cursor movement when using the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter with the Mini DisplayPort enabled MacBook Air, MacBook and MacBook Pro.

It also improves playback of HD video running on systems with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT or GeForce 9600M graphics."

That's it, folks, but to give it all, here's the download link of the 3.2MB NVIDIA graphics update for Mac OS X 10.5.6. I really hope it's going to help you improve your Mac user experience, so...good luck!

Oh, yeah, I was just about to forget it, but the Software Update tool made me recall that iDVD and iLife Media Browser also go updated! Here you have the details...

"iDVD Update 7.0.3 - 27.42MB
This update improves overall stability and addresses a number of other minor issues.

iLife Media Browser Update 2.0 - 2.66MB
This update improves overall stability and addresses a number of other minor issues. It is recommended for all users of Aperture, iLife ’08, iWork ’08, and Mac OS X 10.5.6 Leopard or later."

That's it, folks - just use the Software Update tool and everything should work like a charm!

Star Walk, Updated

If you never tried to count the stars in the sky back in those days when you were a kid, then you have a problem. Really, you should see a doctor right away! Damn, it's a crisis! Well, then you can do something else, and save some time and money - count those stars now! Even better, counting stars is only one of the many things you can accomplish with Star Walk, one of the greatest iPhone apps I have seen so far!

I hope you enjoyed the demo movie above, and if that's not enough to make you grab this $4.99 app, let's see a few additional details, shall we?

Available for both the iPhone and iPod Touch, Star Walk allows you to get a great view of the dense Milky Way clouds, also offering excellent details of the planets. Taking it all one step further than just that, it also offers photos of the Messier objects. Just for the record - I guess not everyone reading this is an astronomer - these "Messier objects" are galaxies, star clusters, and nebulas.

As long as you have an iPhone or iPod Touch ready to receive Star Walk, things are looking great - you'll be able to see past and future astronomical events on their screen as seen from any place on Earth, while you won't need a Computer Science or Astronomy degree to use it!

For now, there are only 6 languages supported in version 1.1, but we'll get more in the near future, I am sure of that. After all, we're all counting stars in the sky, no matter the nationality and, for some, counting stars may be one of the few freedoms left...

Apple Trojan Horse!

Now that Apple's iWork doesn't need a serial number, it also happened what I was sure will come, sooner or later - the release of iWork '09 pirated copies in the wild! Of course that most Mac users won't get into such things, but there are also a bunch of them who like to get valuable software for free. Call them as you wish, but they are - basically - thieves, no matter what some may say. This time, those who happily downloaded a pirate version of iWork '09, also got an extra something...
Apple Trojan Horse

...a Trojan Horse, to be more specific! The virus, called OSX.Trojan.iServices.A, installs itself in the startup as root, then broadcasts its location, allowing for malicious users to take over you computer! This way, those remote attackers can install anything they want, and modify your files. Just think about such an attacker installing a keylogger, and then getting away with all your passwords and personal data. Pretty close to your worst nightmare, don't you think?

On Thursday, Intego announced this threat, followed by Symantec and SecureMac.com. Mike Romo, from Symantec, said "While Symantec Security Response rates OSX.iWork a low-level threat, it is still significant because with the current economic crisis, more and more people might be tempted to pirate software instead of paying for it. What’s particularly vexing is that unless users have some kind of security software, they would never know that their Mac was compromised because the iWork components themselves would work normally."

Since this story would be nothing without a solution to remove this Apple Trojan Horse, here's your gift, you silly pirates(haha): iWorkServices Trojan Removal Tool, a free tool coming from SecureMac. Clean it up, and stay safe from now on!
