New Safari 3 Update, Available!

As most older readers already know, I am not what people usually call "Apple fanboy," but I must confess I love Safari. Nevertheless, Safari is still far from being perfect, no matter if we're talking about the Mac, Linux, or Windows version. The good news is that the latest Safari 3 update brings a feature missed by a lot of people, namely phishing protection, along with some other fixes and updates!

According to Apple, this last Safari 3 update comes with all previous security updates, as well as "protection from fraudulent phishing websites and better identification of online businesses."

If you want to update, simply use the Apple Software Update utility, or go grab the kits for the following operating systems: Mac OS X 10.5.5 Leopard [39MB], Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger [25.7MB], and Windows XP or Vista [19 MB].

I know it may seem strange that I mentioned "Safari on Linux" a bit earlier, so let me say only this: WinE. As far as I know, it is possible to run the Windows version of Safari on Linux using WinE pretty well, although I didn't try it for myself, yet. If you did such a thing, please let us know how it runs, that would be a great contribution to this article.

Considering that we're talking only about the new Safari 3 update, I think the time for an end has come. So far, Safari 3.2 has been running great on my Windows XP SP2, but reports from Windows Vista users would be also something great to hear. Thanks in advance, and enjoy your reloaded Safari 3!

Top iPhone 3G Applications

Like it or not, the iPhone 3G is a top smartphone. Well, maybe a bit more than a smartphone for some, and less than a smartphone for others, but I'll keep considering it only a smartphone, if that's OK with you. Since we're talking about a top smartphone, you also need some top applications for it, and while the App Store is crawling with various programs, no man has enough time to try them all, so today I will try to help you...

First of all, if you want to spend a few minutes to take a look at the Top 10 iPhone Programs article, published here back in July, that could help. I know - it may help you to know better which applications you should avoid, but anyway... some people enjoy Zuma or Luxor, while I hate them both, so you may find something interesting in that article.

Now, let's leave that one behind and grab exactly 10 top iPhone 3G applications you should use, and not avoid! Ready or not, here we go...

10. If you're missing the old phone your gramma still has lying around, then Rotary Dialer, priced at only $0.99, will surely help. Basically, this is all about turning your 21st century iPhone into a retro desktop rotary phone. Once installed, this app replaces the iPhone's numeric keypad with a virtual rotary-style dialer with the look & feel of its historic counterpart(including sounds!).

9. Most people I know use eBay, and at least half of them also use various other online shops. With Save Benjis, you can compare prices for over 15 million products from more than 1000 different stores. Even better, this iPhone 3G app is FREE!

8. For all those video freaks out there, Truveo Video Search is another free app that gives you no excuse for not having it installed on your iPhone 3G!

7. For only $2.99, Vicinity allows you to instantly get one-tap information about local services and amenities, including restaurants, bars, transportation, entertainment and fast food joints.

6. Following the same approach, Where? does about the same thing as Vicinity, only that it doesn't cost a penny. Anyway, I never had the occasion to try them out side by side, so I can't exactly tell you which one is better, especially since my area has no decent GPS coverage...

5. This is not one I would use, since I like to walk around instead of using aids, but Remote is a great tool for the lazy ones. This free app turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a remote control for your Mac or Apple TV.

4. WeatherBug needs no introduction, so if you don't want to get caught by the rain without an umbrella...get this one - it's free!

3. Facebook is my number 3 top iPhone 3G application. Just give it a try - if you're not one of those who hate social networking, you gotta love this one!

2. I can't live without music, and paying $9.99 for being able to create my own music on the iPhone doesn't seem too much at all. Band is the app able to help you with that, and I think it's nothing less but great!

1. Priced at $9.99, Super Monkey Ball is the best iPhone 3G app I can think of at this time. Obviously, such a top depends a lot on the one choosing the programs and his own needs, but I am sure that, sooner or later, every iPhone 3G owner will play some game on it, so why not a great game?

That's all for today's top iPhone 3G applications, but we'll get back to this topic, sooner or later. After all, there are so many iPhone apps waiting to be discovered...

iPhone & Nine Inch Nails = Nine Inch Nails Revenge!

I don't know about you, but I feel it's confession time for me once again. No, no, I have no intention of going to a priest, especially since the chances of finding one who's into Nine Inch Nails and the iPhone are virtually inexistent. OK, but what about that confession?

The confession is that Nine Inch Nails is one of those bands I keep saying "I need to pay more attention to this one," but there's always something coming in ahead of it, so I leave it for another time. Now, it's my pleasure to tell you about iPhone & Nine Inch Nails' meeting place, namely the Nine Inch Nails Revenge music game!

Priced at $4.99, Nine Inch Nails Revenge is the first special edition of the notorious Tap Tap Revenge, and allows you to tap, shake, and bang your head to the beats of no less than 13 Nine Inch Nails tracks. Even more, you can play solo or against a friend, since Nine Inch Nails Revenge also includes a head-to-head two-player mode.

What could be even more attractive than that? Well, I think it could all start with "Revenge Revenge," where the first "Revenge" is the name of a Canadian Extremist metal band...

Cheap iPhone 3G? No, Cheaper!

If you're looking for a cheap iPhone 3G, then I have some news for you - you're not the only one! Obviously, most people who want to get the iPhone 3G are looking for a good deal, but nothing's better than to get the phone from Apple or one of its carriers in the area you're living in, if there are more available. Anyway, before moving on, let me tell you something - why hurry and not wait for next month's shopping season ?

Why wait? Just look at this - in France, Orange is pushing forward a promotional campaign, entitled "Christmas Origami star," which lasts from November 13th - the end of an earlier promotional cycle for Orange - until January 14th, way to go after Christmas! For now, all we know about it is that the 16 GB iPhone 3G will drop its price down to 129 EUR, roughly $165, from a previous 199 EUR, while the 8 GB could go as low as 99 EUR!

Last year, seeing cheap iPhone 3G beauties ready and willing lead European customers into a shopping spree, and now it seems Apple's products will put the so-called "crisis" once again to the test - can the cheap iphone 3G repeat last year's performance in France (and maybe other European countries), or not?

That's what remains to be seen, and considering the fact there's also a rumor saying Costco will sell the iPhone 3G starting at $149 in January, the future may be extremely bright for those who didn't enter the big iPhone 3G family just yet...

Custom Carbon Fiber Hood… For MacBook Air!

posted in news, by Codrut Nistor

Back in late 2006, a modder claimed to be the creator of "world’s first carbon fiber MacBook," and to accomplish his goal, he used a MacBook and a $20 Carbon Graphix vinyl sticker. It is funny to mention it, but when I heard that Apple may finally build some carbon fiber MacBooks, I suddenly remembered about that early attempt, since I wrote about that story back then, although BindApple was not up yet. Back in 2006, it was a custom carbon fiber hood for the MacBook, now we're talking about a carbon fiber body, as you're going to see right away...

While everyone went crazy about MacBook Air's size, it seems Apple is not entirely happy with it. No, it's not the fact they have taken away the optical drive, although I am sure there are plenty MacBook Air users who wouldn't mind having at least a DVD-ROM drive... it's all about the weight! Yes, you got that right - despite the fact Apple's MacBook Air was, for a period, world's thinnest laptop, it still has a weight problem, in its creator's eyes...

Usually used in the aerospace, sporting, and racing industries, carbon fiber made its way into the computing world, with Sony and Voodoo PC starting to deliver lightweight notebooks using this material. If they can do it, why not Apple?

Current reports are claiming that moving from a custom carbon fiber hood to a factory carbon fiber build can cost a bit, but the new MacBook Air would go down from 1363 grams to 1263 grams. Well, one chocolate less... not such a big deal, if you ask me, but it's Apple's call, not mine!

For now, this is only a rumor, but we may see it turning into reality sooner than expected. Anyway, no MacBook updates remaining this year, that's clear - Apple said it, but since they didn't say anything about next year...
