Software Updates

Since Apple's software updates arrive in packs, and without providing too many details about the changes, I guess the only thing to do is update your software and check what's new for yourself, or wait to see what others have to say about it. Since I am not the one to test Apple software for you just yet, today I'll tell you only a few things about the updates the Cupertino-based company released in the last 24 hours, so let's go!

Java IDE in Mac OS X

First, you should know that Apple seeded a new build for Mac OS X Leopard Server 10.5.3, labeled 9D25. This new build fixes a handful of bugs, such as various issues with the Mail and Web Server components, the Server Assistant, and Slapconfig, but the best part is that rumors say we should get the 10.5.3 version finalized within the next two weeks.

Yesterday, the ATI Radeon HD firmware got updated, bringing the current version to 1.0.1 and increasing stability for those using the Radeon HD 2400 XT or Radeon HD 2600 Pro. The 848KB update can be downloaded from the Apple website, of course.

Java for Mac OS X Leopard also got an update, which installs Java SE 6 1.6.0_05 for all compatible Macs. The Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 1 is also available on Apple.com, of course. Just click the link above and you'll end up on the official product page.

At last, it should also be noted that Microsoft released Messenger for Mac 7 with video. Since this is not a release from Apple, I won't get into it. After all, you have the link above, so you know what to do...

Well, this is it for today, I hope at least one of the updates above proves to be useful to you and you won't have any problems while bringing your software up to date. Good luck!

3G iPhone Rumors

posted in news, by admin

While the main questions about the 3G iPhone everybody asks are "why," "when," "how expensive" and "what are going to be the technical specifications," one of the latest rumors related to Apple's upcoming mobile phone answers another interesting question, "how many." Anyway, today we'll talk about more things just one rumor, but all will have one thing in common - the 3G iPhone. OK, these being said, let's go!

iPhone and iPod Touch

First, let's talk about the numbers of the 3G iPhone. Unfortunately, we have no numbers regarding its technical capabilities, but since I already heard this at least twice in the last 24 hours, I guess it can't be completely wrong. Ladies and gentlemen, no matter how incredible it may seem (at least to me), Apple has ordered no less than 25 million 3G iPhones! Yes, that's right, 25 million, 25 followed by nine zeroes, about twice as more as the number of iPhones sold so far!

Before we move on, let me tell you that the info regarding those 25 million 3G iPhones comes from Commercial Times, a Chinese site, and apart from the number, they also claim the company to manufacture these iPhones is Foxconn. Now, let's move to another interesting report about the iPhone, this time coming from the US...

According to Fortune's Scott Morris, "AT&T is preparing to subsidize $200 of the cost of a new iPhone, bringing the price down to $199 for customers who sign two-year contracts, the source says. Apple is expected to have two versions of the new iPhone, an 8-gigabyte-memory and a 16-gigabyte-memory model with price tags widely expected to be $399 and $499."

As usual, Apple and AT&T didn't say anything yet, but that must happen sooner or later.

Finally, it seems everyone is looking forward to the WWDC08 conference, which is going to be held in San Francisco, Moscone West, between the 9th and 13th of June. Needless to say what we expect to happen then...

Vintage G4s

Manufacturing a product and selling it is only a part of the process, because the most important thing for a hardware or software company is to provide the best possible customer support. Obviously, everything has a limit, and it's a pity to see that most products cease being supported when they can still prove to be useful for some users. Unfortunately, this is called "evolution," and there's nothing we can do to stop it. Now, the time has come for Apple to stop providing support for some older Macs...

Old Macintosh

Starting on the 17th of June, Apple will stop offering support for 5 of its older products, taking them from the "old" to the "vintage" league. These products are the iBooks with 32 MB VRAM, the iBook (Opaque 16 VRAM), the Sunflower iMac Flat Panel, released in the summer of 2001, the eMac and, at last, the Power Mac G4 with Firewire 800.

Considering the above, most G4 computers are now "vintage," so Apple will stop hardware support for them, except for those based in California, where obsolete computers must be supported due to legislation.

Well, this is it...a few more bite the dust. Do you still have a G4 Apple? Keep it well, because next time something breaks, you may no longer be able to find replacement parts!

OK, no more rumors! Today, it's about the real thing, coming straight from Apple! Even better, it's not just some minor software update, or news regarding iTunes' market share, because Apple has just announced what everyone was waiting for - the refresh of their iMac line-up!

Apple iMac

About a day ago, Apple revealed its updated iMacs, powered by the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processor, just as expected, but also featuring the NVIDIA 8800 GS video card. The design remained the same, with the build-in iSight camera, and the "old" aluminum case used for the iMacs previously released.

The new Apple iMacs are available for prices between $1,199 and $1,799, with detailed features looking like this:

- 20- to 24-inch LCD display
- 2.4 GHz to 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with a 1066 MHz front-side bus
- 1 GB or 2 GB of memory, expandable to 4GB
- 250 GB or 320 GB Serial ATA 7200 rpm HDD (1 TB option for the 24-inch model)
- a slot-load 8x SuperDrive® with double-layer support (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
- ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB GDDR3 memory or HD 2600 Pro with 256MB GDDR3, but there's the NVIDIA 8800 GS option available for those that want to get the most out of their iMac
- built-in AirPort Extreme 802.11n wireless networking & Bluetooth 2.1+EDR
- mini-DVI out (adapters for DVI, VGA and Composite/S-Video sold separately)
- built-in stereo speakers and microphone
- the Apple Keyboard, Mighty Mouse and infrared Apple Remote

These being said, I'll leave you now, while I check another rumor on my list that became reality...

Mighty Mouse Easter Egg

Since it's Easter for a lot of people, and there are still things to be done, I don't want to keep you waiting. Today, I just found an older picture of Apple's Mighty Mouse, and I think it's something great to see. Yes, it's a hardware Easter Egg. No, this is not a fake image, is a picture made more than 2 years ago, but I guess this is still true today.

Mighty Mouse projection

Can you see the Mighty Mouse projection? I am sure you do, but I really regret the fact that I don't have one around now. Could you help me and send your pictures of this optical pattern created by the Mighty Mouse? That would be simply great, thanks in advance!
